It was used as propaganda in the German Revolution 1848/1849. The melody was composed by Joseph Haydn. I like our anthem, even when it is forbidden to sing the original first an second verse. @LineOfCars the cold here is very easy to adapt, the country is prepared to the winters. The houses have isolation and heat system. The shops and public transportation also. You have proper clothes for every season. I have felt much colder in Rio de janeiro winter than here. And Rios winter hardly gets under +20, while here it gets under -30. The main diferença is finland is build for cold season, Brazil isn't.

It's a really wonderful piece of music. As an American from the Cold War era, I was raised to hate and fear the Russians, but their anthem is a true thing of beauty. I also love the Brasilian anthem, even though it is a bit of an odd piece of music to make into a national anthem.
