You guys were amazing, but if I wrote a suite and someone played that good, I would want to hear the whole suite performed.

So immaculately precise....but it's so "safe". Not all Japanese bands play like this, but a lot of them do. A cultural thing I've learned from watching vlogs of Americans teaching English in Japan is that Japanese students are perfectionistic to the point of being horribly scared to make mistakes. This certainly comes through in how a lot of them play.
@kenzieford36125 жыл бұрын
takigan I don’t know that they’re “horribly scared” or anything. Just that’s how to succeed and/or get into good schools here is to be technically as perfect as possible. I’m from North America but live in Japan and am in band here. It’s the same. Their chords are perfectly in tune with a tuner even when it should probably be done by ear. It’s not wrong, just different from how we do it in the West.

They play just wonderful. In Sweden the windbands is almost gone. So those who are left miss instruments so this great transcriptions or arrangements isnt possible to play. Swedish windband sometimes have to use this arrangements with 6 parts. But just wondering? Where are the guys? Its almost a woman wind band? I have never seen so many girls on brass its almost non existen in Sweden?
@takinoborudesu9 жыл бұрын
+Jerry Berglund Band is considered a very girly activity in japanese schools in the same way cheerleading is considered girly in america, and a lot of wind bands are almost entirely female because of that.

The Mars section at minute 11:36, was devoid of emotion and musical empathy. However, I must say , this is one fine musical ensemble. Great technical ability.
@KyleKlabunde6 жыл бұрын
I think it has to do the the arrangement. I don't know why they didn't play the Holst arranged version for band.
@riffraftmusic86695 жыл бұрын
Where is the musical whatever at 11:36? It's with the absent string section, without which these young musicians are doing perfectly well. I think they deserve a string section, though. They're doing as well as any wind ensemble I've ever heard with a piece not written for wind ensemble. Their articulations, intonation, and balance are better than could be expected for their age.

it is much easier to have an oversized band play lighter, thus enabling a much cleaner and yet very full sound. a professional band could pull this off with 1/3 the instruments.

Can you name one that performed at the level of the 2nd J.H.S. Koriyama "band", even though it was written for strings, not woodwinds. Nevertheless, these junior high kids performed at an exceptional level.

Why are there two timpanis?
@8avexp7 жыл бұрын
Holst originally wrote for two timpanists. Uranus also calls for two timpanists. He personally transcribed Mars for band and in the process, condensed the timp part for one person. I've played both his own band version of Mars (taken down a step from G to F btw) as well as the entire orchestral version.

I would have to say, the dynamics are lacking which makes it musically appealing. I think they do this for a reason. When you play softly and lightly, it is much easier to control. That is why they have such a large band, to make up for the lack of guts or dynamics.
@maxpowr9010 жыл бұрын
True but that andante section in Jupiter was mediocre at best. I played both movements in high school [trumpet] and it pained me to see the brass section "gasp" during the crescendo at 12:55. I know it's common to breathe at the end of a phrase but you need to power through when you crescendo into the next phrase. There is a reason there is an accented staccato shortly after the crescendo which is where you are supposed to breathe.
