Most performances of Jupiter are at a faster tempo, but I like this tempo much better. It's easier to appreciate all the interplay between instruments while still having a forward energy and jovial tone.

So true. Since the middle melody is relatively simple, it's obviously meant to have very broad, majestic feel. Speeding it up strips it of the joyous element imo

Nope. Positively pedestrian. Play at 1.25 and its about right for the chorale. Orchestra seems reserved to me, almost like their afraid to have energy and be jovial.

I really love the slower tempo at 3:11. I first was introduced to this piece my freshman year of highschool (I played it in our orchestra, violist), then again as an adult when I heard Ayaka Hirahara's song with the same title. Now, as a father, I was pleasantly surprised to hear it in an episode of _Bluey_ of all things, and it feels crazy to say it, but that cartoon moved me to tears at the end. If you haven't seen it, it's the episode titled "Sleepytime", and you'll love how the main theme was woven into the story!

The slowest tempi for "Jupiter" is the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Bernard Herrmann. It clocks in at 9:01. Herrmann's Decca Phase-4 recording received mostly negative reviews on account of Herrmann's way-too-slow tempi. In the case of this movement, however, Herrmann imbues the piece the gravity it requires.

Ach wie toll. Endlich mal kein Wettrennen. Ein großartige Interpretation, in der man die Weite wahrlich spüren kann. Die Flöten haben mal ne Chance artikulieren zu können. Danke.

WOW! I know this piece & its use with Sir Cyril Rice's words. When I heard QE2's funeral would be at Westminster Abbey, I started looking at performances of "I Vow to Thee My Country" & saw the RAF Centennial at the Abbey; it too is slower but acoustics & people's singing would dictate that. WOW, here it's got "color" & as noted by others, this captures the interplay of instruments, along with the whole visual experience with great camera work. I only wish we had a bit more of the starry ceiling in this wonderful auditorium.

Yes, and so sad The Planets suite wasn't very well received in Holst's lifetime, although now has become one of the basics of all musical lexicon.
