There was an article about Russian freeaboos a few years ago. Dudes were dressed like good ole Southern boys driving huge trucks and complaining about how hard it is to get a rifle in Russia. So they definitely have to exist. There's a few Russian manufacturers making ARs for competition shooters over there.

Just do it. AK’s are fun as hell, especially when modernized. I build a lot of guns at home, and I got bored with the AR platform. Modernizing AK’s is a whole different beast. It can be a little more challenging due to all the options and different specs, but once you get it right…they’re a blast. (Pun intended)

In the world of modernizing AKs people seem to forget about the Galil ACE Gen 2 exists. Already has a M-lok free float rail, continuous top rail, AR buffer tube stock, better safety and charging handle location (for us righties anyways), and in 5.56 has a last round bolt hold open and takes AR15 mags.

I personally just don't get it. You abandon the modularity, accuracy, and ergos of the AR that make it so damn popular, only to also abandon the surfeit of shared magazines, bolts, and barrels, as well as the heavier bullet, that AK-pattern rifles enjoy. If you wanna enjoy an AK on a budget and already have cases of 5 56 stacked up from years ago... sure? I just don't see much use case for them outside of that.

@@nomad155 Hey, fun needs no excuse, I get it. I've just seen my share of weird takes justifying this or that gun. 5.56 AKs, to me, occupy a weird middle ground I personally wouldn't tread. But if someone else is getting their jollies from it, good for them. It's not my money.
@nomad155
@nomad155 3 ай бұрын
@@michaelturk7237 it really depends. For Self defense and regular shooting it's fine. The problem is the ergonomic support and such. I think it's fine if someone is a casual shooter. Home defense, it doesn't matter. But if on competition for money, while not impossible, it won't be easy cause they have those dumb rules like activating the safety which may be a challenge for a southpaw, or using NODS. So it's user case scenario. They're great guns, but political corruption on both sides of the world have kept it very bare bones.

FYI - If you put in a significant number of rounds/time behind the AK, you'll find that extended charging handles tend to cause issues by adding weight to the bolt carrier and have a tough time staying on. Apparently rifle dynamics has even seen welded charging handles snap off.

I know the AK isn't as good as an AR. But I still got one anyway. Mainly because back in the 90s when I was a teenager my father took me and a friend to a gun show once, and I remember seeing AKs there for $300, which was a lot cheaper compared to most other rifles there. That relative cheapness and the fact they were AKs, the guns our old rivals in the ComBloc used, just stuck in my head all these years. When I finally started getting into the gun space a couple of years ago the costs had all gotten to where they are now, but I still wanted an AK, and I got one. I don't regret it; it's a fun gun, I enjoy it immensely. As you said, Brass, if crap hits the fan I'd rather take an AR gun because they're just better overall, but I think the AK is still a decent weapon set even if they're not the absolute best. Of course I went for a brand new Zastava so maybe I'm just defending spending a cool grand on an outdated rifle design and I'm just dumb. But I just love the damn thing no matter how derpy it is.

"This AK cost more than I'd like to admit parting it out." Is the clarion call of all AK guys, and ultimately why I sold mine a while ago. When a gun that's twice as expensive to set up to get 1/2 the ergonomic comfort and usability of an AR no longer has super cheap ammo they become hard to justify as anything but a (very) fun novelty.

a beefy pistol grip and a picatinny stock adapter with a Midwest industries folding buffer tube will help with the front end being heavy while being able to hold the gun more stable but definitely will add more weight.

For lasers, there are some kits(I think it was the Zenitco Leader kit) where there is a step down notch in front of the gas tube on top of the barrel where you can mount your LAM.

Since you're looking for a better charging handle I can personally say the TWS Hob Knob is an excellent AK charging handle upgrade. It took some minor fitment to get it on my AKM (I even scarily grinded some of the tip of the charging handle off to keep it from sticking out too far) but it is overall a really nice, quality charging handle extension that stays on there firm thanks to having three set screws, and I appreciate some nice flutes instead of obnoxious knurling you'll see on a lot of them.

As a die-hard AK fan, I'd probably still get a CMMG MK47 Dissent before an AK build like this. The SureShot chassis makes it cost more than the CMMG (which is ~$2300 naked) and there's so much less jank and hassle to be navigated that way. All the upgrades needed for an AK (rail for optics and lights/lasers, adjustable gas system, better trigger, etc) are all stock on the Dissent

@Mr.Switchy If they made it with a 12.5" barrel, that could be a pretty good option. I think the benefits of an almost 4" shorter gun outweigh the velocoty loss of 100-150fps, from a round not known for long range effectiveness or dependence on velocity anyway. Other than legal reasons, I don't see much justification for 16" barrel AKs

I am and AK guy through and through and Sureshot + my SAM-5 is a great combo. It is the only thing I've seen that makes the rifle seem modern and a clear winner vs even some of the best other builds that I have both owned and gotten to shoot with. I'm under no illusions that the AK is a better rifle than an AR, but a quality AK setup well can put them close enough in performance to where it comes down to the shooter, not the rifle. Also I am definitely watching this on a Friday at work.

I'm running a TWS dogleg 3 on a full size underrolder WASR. I haven't had any noticable zero shift in 3 years and probably 6-7k rounds. I've settled on TA02 ACOG with a 507c piggybacked, ultimak railed piston tube + trijicon 45 degree offset pic rail mount holding a PEQ2, and finally some polymer lower handguard (FAB defense maybe?) with my light and a foregrip on it. It's been a wonderful combo. The ACOG is in the .300blkout flavor and it matches up with 7.62 really well. I've shot it out to 400 yards.

14:30 I can recommend the Red Star Trigger. It´s cheaper (in germany atleast) than the ALG and more versatile. You can set it up in Single and 2 Stage. You can also setup the reset for you likings. I had the ALG but sold it. The Setup can be tricky at first but when its finally set its totally worth it.

Have you tried a full sized Draco? Unmolested on import because it’s a pistol, only loses like 100fps from a 16”, front rail is same length, and it’s way less front heavy. Bone steel or CNC Warrior brace is really good if you don’t want to sbr.

Best AK trigger as the red star army adjustable. You're an engineered. Look at where the friction is relative to the pivot points you can refine an AK trigger far further than you can refine an AR trigger. And the red star armory kind of has everything min Max to give you the nicest feel.
