Hi JB, Digging your bed and adding manure was the correct thing to do. I use the no dig method whenever possible, but sometimes you just have to dig. I know, I know, I know, there are people who'll disagree. I don't care what anyone says. Almost fifty years of gardening experience tells me you did the right thing. Keep soldiering on.

So many people like to reccomend no-dig without considering the environmental impact of all that compost your buying, all the packaging and delivery it took to get to your beds... plus if digging really did destroy the 'soil health' as much as people claim, then no land in the UK would be plantable with all the moles, squirrels and foxes we have constantly digging. I'm convinved the 'no dig' cult has only got so much traction because the old-school dig gardeners and farmers aren't as active online to push other ideas.

That was so funny at the end - you trying to remember all the chilli patrons - anyway you did it - finally. Beds looking lovely - you have to do what you think is best - dig or no dig - whatever works. Great video 😊

You are going to love your shed JB. I love my shed, the gutters, and the two IBC tanks that it fills with rain water over the winter. Plan ahead for this when you decide upon how to position your shed, it's a rain water gatherer, and it's a cosy place to escape from the rain. The IBC tanks give the shed some shelter from the prevailing wind. Enjoy your cuppa in the shed while she gathers nature's bounty of rain to water your garden in the hot summer months.

@@carolineholland4178 yes I'm really looking forward to having more rainwater collection, which is why I've been picking up extra water butts recently, an IBC would be brilliant though!

Hi JB, just quickly while watching your new vlog if your water butts do leak or if you have compost bins that you don’t use anymore don’t discard cos you can always cut them in half and make them into Carrot beds and lids for the compost bins can be used as birdbaths. The plot always looks fab after a strumming /mowing doesn’t it. I’m know a lot of people don’t like grass round raised beds. I think they always look lovely.. veg cover designs are always an issue and time consuming. Jessie’s and Steve at seaside garden veg cover set ups are a good idea but potentially costly. PSB looks really good. 👏👏You also have good BN squash too. 😊. Serious growers recommended burying the none fruiting part of vine and each leaf joint with grow roots and hence take up more nutrients. Was thinking Maybe Get some crocodile clips to help when alone and putting netting on.

We built a cage last year from our old polytunnel frame 3x2 I think with a proper door. Bought some debris netting and covered it then used the mole grips on the door. Love it! Moving it over winter to another spot only because we have clubroot. Use the pipes and netting for smaller brassicas.

I saw a guy use plastic tile edging with a curved profile. He sticky taped it to the side of the outside of the poly tunnel and it just trickled into the water barrel. I’ve not tried it yet but it looks genius, cheap and easy. The channel is Allotment diary from 11year ago!!!

JB, otherwise you can try aquarium silicone for your leaking tank. Aquarium silicone is easy to handle and contains no toxins as it is designed to hold aquariums together and I have successfully fixed plastic pieces when I built different things in and to my aquarium. Love your channel.

I had a small split in my waterbutt earlier on in the year. I drilled a small hole either end to stop it getting worse and sealed it with Black Jack tape, still holding... With a raised bed, I just used some inch & a half tree stakes, hammer them in and cut off as needed. They won't last forever, but cheap to replace.
@JBNat
@JBNat 16 сағат бұрын
Yes I did think about just using wooden stakes. For some reason I thought I was being really clever with the rebar stakes though...

I found this a few years ago for fixing leaking water butts, it can be used on surfaces that are not totally dry, works a treat - Supafix supa bond No gun ( SFIXX S bond ) comes in various colours. Hope that helps ? Great news about the shed. Take care.

If you get loads of slightly dodgy apples or windfall again you could cut off the not so bad bits and make apple (scrap) cider vinegar, you can get bottles with the mother from shops that you can use as the starter. Good for cleaning and potentially for your hot sauces too. Going to vicariously live through you today as it rwins down and I dont feel like going to the allotment 😅

Ugh, netting. So necessary but such a pain. I have around 5 beds with it for brassicas etc and every time I see I need to to a bit of tidying up/leaf pruning inside I groan and often put it off for next time! I've learned to take out the securing hooks from the ground on just one side and a half and then crawl inside and practise some form of yoga to get at all the areas without damaging the plants. But yes I concur with the downer about netting!
@JBNat
@JBNat 16 сағат бұрын
Hahahahaha yes I've done that yoga Weeding so many times before 😂 much easier to just mulch it with manure and cover it all up after a quick hoe

Just put a cane along the top JB it gives you somewhere to fold the net back on to and keeps the hoops upright and in place .Tie on or use cable ties .You just fold the net back on one side for access .
@JBNat
@JBNat 16 сағат бұрын
That's what I'd done before but the canes were just slipping off down the hoop 😭 turned into a right mess! Might be able to get it a bit tighter with cable ties though, good thinking.

Would the green plastic poles with metal inside work for your ground? I didn’t like them due to being plastic, and some are not very sturdy (tip: don’t try to save money on these… ). But they work so much better over time than bamboo for staking in wet ground. I’m very unhappily being converted 😅
@JBNat
@JBNat Күн бұрын
@@Ragt0p that's what I used to use before they all snapped 😅 I think they have about the same lifespan as bamboo but are way way more expensive!!

@@JBNat ha, that’s interesting. Here they are similarly priced, and I get the chunkier plastic poles (some are very thin and utterly useless). I haven’t years of experience with them, but my the ones I bought this spring looks great, and the bamboo has deteriorated and splintered ends. This gardening lark is constant trial and error, huh? It’s my favorite bit, when it’s not the most frustrating bit 🤣
