historia:
Bratislava získala súčasný názov začiatkom roka 1919. Pred rokom 1918 sa v 19. storočí volala po slovensky Prešporok, Prešpurek alebo zriedkavo Bratislava, Břetislava či Požúň, po maďarsky Pozsony, po nemecky Preßburg (súčasným pravopisom Pressburg). V maďarčine sa dodnes prevažne používa názov Pozsony, v nemčine sa dnes používa aj názov Pressburg, aj názov Bratislava.
Latinský názov znie Posonium alebo staršie aj (z gréčtiny) Istropolis.
Bratislava je známa aj pod označeniami Krásavica na Dunaji, Mesto fontán a Mesto Mieru (titul mestu udelila Svetová rada mieru).
Skrátené sa často nazýva aj Blava, proti čomu niekedy bojujú Bratislavčania argumentujúc tým, že Blava je malá rieka v Trnavskom okrese. Avšak krátenie mien miest s dlhým názvom je bežné a slúži len na urýchlenie komunikácie.

Bratislava acquired its current name at the beginning of 1919. Before 1918, in the 19th century it was called Prešporok, Prešpurek in Slovak, or rarely Bratislava, Břetislava or Požúň, in Hungarian Pozsony, in German Preßburg (currently spelled Pressburg). In Hungarian, the name Pozsony is still used today, in German, the name Pressburg and Bratislava are also used today.
The Latin name is Posonium or earlier (from Greek) Istropolis.
Bratislava is also known as Krásavica na Dunaji, City of Fountains and City of Peace (the title was awarded to the city by the World Peace Council).
The abbreviated form is often called Blava, which Bratislava residents sometimes fight against, arguing that Blava is a small river in the Trnava district. However, shortening the names of places with long names is common and only serves to speed up communication.
