I'm glad you mentioned the difficulty spike that prevented me from playing much. I was amazed when I got to the chapter one boss at level 12, my natural level after battling most enemies I saw, with no problems so far, then after losing enough times I finally looked up a guide and the recommended level was 20???

I didn't go into Bravely Default 2 expecting too much from the story (when it comes to BD, I'm all about that classic FF Job system), but I've been almost surprised at how much I've enjoyed the story for what it is. The main cast is pretty charming, and I've actually ended up invested in the character-focused side-stories and the town-based arcs you come across; the Rimedhal chapter, in particular, felt like a series of emotional gut punches.

I feel like it's sort of like a Dragon Quest game in terms of the progression, where each area has a very memorable story with likeable NPCs, but the overall plotline is just "beat Evil Darksatan" in the end. It's a game that's very much more about the journey than the destination

I don't know if it's because I'm bad or because I hate to grind but damn do I hate the counter system. I feel like there is ONE team composition for each bosses. So you have to test out the boss, remember is counter check what job could work grind the jobs, try again and hope he doesn't devellop a counter later into the fight.... Also damn the H.U.D. is bad.For exemple I was fighting the thief boss and he was countering one of my move but I couldn't tell what it was because the counter text would appear for half a second while the dude was doing a backflip so I couldn't read what he was countering.

One of the things I did actually like about End Layer was that you had to pick between different jobs. It seems like it would be a bummer to miss out on things, but something about that made me feel like I was sculpting my playthrough to be unique. Anyway, great review! I really like this game, and I think it's going to be a shoe-in for my top 10 favorite games from this year.
@nightwish1453 Жыл бұрын
old comment but with end layer, how the sidequests were done in JP were slightly different and it made you guilty even more if you were trying to get all the jobs where you had to make the same choice to get the good ending, this was trimmed out in the west and probably due to cticisms it had in japan

I spent relatively little time grinding by taking advantage of monster bait and the continuous battle bonuses. And then when you get to the end of the game you can make it from the 50s(where I was after getting the last asterisk) to max level extremely quickly once you get said last asterisk

I think the game looks gorgeous and the style is so good. I was on the fence but after hearing about job combos and I actually want enemies on the map so, thanks for the review helping me decide :) This is amazing for handheld fidelity, and RPGs are perfect for that cross save sort of persistence at home or away. It was a bit sad, but I thought the art style looked better on 3DS and DS. It seems it worked better when it was a bit more abstract (i.e. cartoony) with the lower resolution and less realistic effects. I think they went for a kind of 60s kids TV puppet show style in Bravely Default 2, which is really cool, but hopefully the next one will look even better on Nintendo's next gen hardware. By the way, just as a long time subscriber friendly idea. Since you like the bravely default series, it'd be super interesting to see what you think about the series precursor "Final Fantasy - four heroes of light" that was on the DS. That one also has a lovely art-style.

If you take advantage of the continuous battle mechanic you’ll leap ahead with relatively little grinding. Twice in salvalon I just herded monsters to the beach and fought like 8 at once with a bait item and jumped many job levels ahead and a decent chunk of experience for the first chapter of the game

I was very interested in this game at launch because I found out about the very trippy plots of the first two Bravely games (thanks Clemps), but with this game being quite lacking in that area I lost interest, it just feels really odd to not deliver on that in this one. That and the character models being very ugly means it kind of dropped off my radar, though maybe I’ll get round to it eventually.

I'm the exact opposite. I love card games in my JRPG's. I played B&D to get the asterisk, and wasn't too impressed. They really hammered home the tutorial, but at the end of that, my questions weren't really answered. I always just thought I'd eventually go back and make my way through the ranks, but I just finished the game and I have no interest (right now at least) to go back and play B&D. Maybe I'm missing something.

I mean Triple Triad has a real physical version, is in FFXIV and in the FF Portal App. Triple Triad earned it reputation. It's litterally the only Square minigame that despite you can go the whole game never playing is the only one that people come back to. Tetra Master flopped in FFXI. FF7 snowboarding on flipphones flopped, FF7 G Bike and smartphones flopped.
