Be sure to remove Damage Dispersion against Dr Qada (unless you want something funny to happen) Other than that, Damage Dispersion is nice just for 1 SP to lower dmg taken and then heal the dmg off with AOE heal

I have a funny story regarding your little comment there about Qada that I'm sure at least a few others have also had happen.... I unlocked Damage Dispersion really early on, equipped it, forgot about it since it was on for a while, (also it was really useful) and had my whole team instantly K.O.'d from Dark Breath. I couldn't figure out why it happened til it killed me 3 more times. I was dumb and didn't read the little notification that triggers when the skill activates >.>

Got recommended this a few day’s ago and wow, this video is super entertaining as someone who started the series with Bravely ll. In 2, due to how that game functions with its specialties and job level bonuses, Black Mage just felt like it didn’t have anything that benefited itself or had much to offer other jobs besides its spells. I found this video as an interesting window into a world where I would feel inclined to use it past the first chapter. Fantastic work regardless of my mini rant though!

BD 2's choice to put Black Magic solely on Black Mage was a strange choice, I admit. It's probably my biggest gripe with how 2 handled magic jobs, since most of them have to accommodate most of their job levels to learning new spells rather than gaining abilities that any job can use.

@@Jadersgames Yeah, BD2 is not a game for magic enthusiasts. Though i made Elvis a mage anyway. It is interesting that he basically has to put his mentors job to the side and make his main job the one he get from his best friend to utilize Black Mage to its full potential.^^

M Def Pierce is the best support ability for damage caster. It's worthy to train black mage just for that. There is no other support ability that raise as much magic damage. By properly default/braving, you can mitigate its frail nature and deal massive damage. You can argue that the white mage can do the same but healers need costant attention to the party to affort default. I never found black mage problematic early to mid game. They are a lot of random encounters that they are pretty useful for their elemental damage. Other caster jobs do outclass them late game but they are much more awful for early to mid game outside of specific cheese strats. MP and ether was never a problem for me. I just steal them from my enemies. Find enemies to steal ether and grind them for both ether and job points were my grinding spots. You don't need to go to inns to heal mp if enemies are your mp source. If I remember correctly, the first area to steal them was the clock tower in the desert and there were weak to thunder.

Man... I've written, rewritten, deleted, edited, started over, written again all of my turbulent thoughts on Black mage several times over the past 4 days i've been experimenting with it in my own file. Perhaps that in and of itself should be it's own statement. And yet, I don't want to be dismissive or outright negative about any jobs in this game. Regardless, Black Mage is likely to be at least some part of your magic builds. I also want to stay within the established guidelines of these overviews, too. I dont want to give specific builds or bring up jobs or skillsets that have yet to be explained in the series. This makes Black Mage awkward to talk about, because their skill- Black Magic, has a pretty defined curve along the game, and has highs and lows around certain points and unlocks throughout the game. Unfortunately, no one has time to read that kind of comment, especially on youtube, so I'll have to skip over that. So. Black Magic. To be frank, spell damage in general, and by extension Black Magic, starts to need more and more support as the game goes on. This is just an aspect of offensive magic in BD1. For several reasons, magic attack is hard to stack, and group casting lowers the damage on individual targets. Despite that, the Black Mage at it's very WORST, is the De-facto job or subjob for any dedicated damage caster. it's coverage is wide enough to never have any blind spots. It's spells can just be group cast innately. It's just a mage that works and will work out of the box. As the main job, it can use another spell list to look for more damage types to abuse the weakness bonus. As the sub job, it brings a welcomed reliability and coverage to another caster. The strengths and weaknesses of Black Mage are so very deeply rooted with the systems governing magic damage itself in BD1. it's so very hard to dig through that in a succinct manner, especially without noting certain synergies or abilities. Sidestepping that, the Black mage really starts to shine when you really put in the effort to support them across the entire team. Most physical jobs can more or less be self contained, but the Black mage starts to struggle if you leave them to fend for themselves. There's a reason that black resonance works the way it does for only 1 support slot. You dont NEED to have a party full of black mages to get that benefit. If youre just going to fill that final slot with speed +10% anyway, might as well help your mage instead. The more you put into black mage, the more you'll get out of it. There are ways to increase elemental damage, ways to inflict elemental weaknesses, ways to lower MP costs- all ways to make your humble early game mage fill the screen with 9s. If you want to run one, be sure to give it some consideration.

Trying to make Black Mage work in BD1 has become weirdly really fun for me, it's like fitting all the right pieces together to make a jigsaw puzzle. I used to right if off as "magic bad" which isn't entirely UNtrue in this game but....putting all the things together for it can make it work really well even early game (Lambent Hats, Withering Ripple)
