It is a common behavior for small animals that find themselves captured by a stronger animal to lie still. If the larger animal has shown no intent to eat them, then trying to struggle is more likely to get themselves hurt, either from falling a hold, or startling the larger animal. It's why lizards like this make good exotic pets, their instincts are well suited to letting their humans handle them, and they quickly learn that big ape thing is friendly and likes being climbed on. It IS important to remember that every animal is an individual with it's own personality, and some may not enjoy being handled at all. if an animal still tries to escape being held, don't pick it up, (generally don't try to pick up wild animals at all, but I digress) let it go on it's way.

They are also in the sonoran desert in tucson lots of places you can not get off the trails along with places you cant take vehicles on the trails some trails are horses bikes or walking only no atv or ohv

This actually takes place in a wildlife preserve- they can only drive in designated areas. Thus why they didn’t bring their normal heavy packs- anything they haul out they need to be able to haul back. It’s usually safer to just double back for heavy supplies than to carry them.
