Which I find hilarious as they have no problems with Kitanas, pole axes and other edged weapons that can be used for dismemberment/decapitation (which was a common occurence in the original comic books for TMNT)

I learned the 2003 animated series was based off the original comics (watch The Shredder Strikes Back parts 1 & 2 from that series). Now, I have Mirage Leonardo: One-Shot & issue #10 in Color Classics editions by IDW comics in my collection. I grew up on the 1987 series & the 1st 2 90s movies & didn't know the comics existed till I was an adult.

Which actually makes sense in scope of respective forms. Here Ralph was established as "strongest & meanest" and moment when we see him defeated and later brotheris saying "they could use Ralph about now" demonstrates in how dire straits they are. In longer running series, especially 2003 it made sense to focus on Leo.

It was Leo who was the only one of the turtles to lay a scratch on the Shredder. And the reason the bros said they could use Ralph about now was because they were beginning to be overwhelmed by the numbers. So ofc one more ally on their side would help. The reason it makes sense to have Ralph get attacked instead of Leo is because Ralph is the loner and is always going out on his own. That makes him the most vulnerable and easiest to ambush

Because they found Ralph the most interesting of the turtles because he was the most different and the only one of the turtles who seemed to have an inner conflict. That's why they made him the main character in the movie and why they made him get attacked instead of Leo. Also due to Ralph's rebellious nature and him always going out on his own it makes sense that he would be the one to be ambushed by the foot over Leo. The turtles had very strict curfew and weren't allowed to interact too much with the surface world especially in the day time. Ralp seemed to be the only one breaking those rules.

I don't actually understand in the "chuck-off" that when Micky was doing his 3rd "trick" all he was doing was spinning the nun-chuck around, the easiest thing to do, yet the foot looked like he couldn't believe what he was seeing. Am I missing something there?

It showed that Mikey’s skill with the chucks were at a far higher level than the foot ninja battling him because he was just messing around too when he was spinning his chuck on his finger, while the foot ninja was serious.
