You have nothing to hide, but: - Insurance companies will get ahold of information about you, that you didn't even know would be important and use it to predict that you may get an illness and increase your premiums, reduce your coverage or straight out deny you. They didn't warn you about the illness naturally, not their responsibility. - Banks and financial companies get ahold of your data and increase your interest rates based on your propensity to switch providers or how savy you are in your financial deals. - Profiteers get ahold of your data and information you share with your affiliates and use this to speculate on the stock market, crashing your employers stock values after a big-buy pump&dump. - Hackers get ahold of your data and use it to automatically answer any and all "security questions" to reset your authentication, thus taking over your accounts. So, maybe "having nothing to hide" isn't a good reason to let everyone spy on you?

It's still a bad argument. The problem won't be solved by passing coded notes back and forth with e2e any more than it was in the past. You still have to get rid of the tyrants or sooner or later they get what they want. No amount of encryption can stop them from being able to look at someone, make assumptions, and arrest or otherwise violate them based on those assumptions. We're sat here discussing an outmoded stopgap while certain classes of people are openly committing felonies and getting away with it. Clearly secrecy isn't the issue here.

But you cant say "give me your home keys and leave the country for a week" and you cant say "give me your credit card and go take a shower" and expect people to say "yeah thats fine since i have nothing to hide". Because theft is a thing and the example that OP made is just a really bad pick in my eyes. I just made a better one from the top off my head. indeed. You're a cautious man, a tech for example, who daily drives linux and a degoogled phone. You keep your ear close to the ground on all privacy-based issues. But then your wife is not a tech. She might care about privacy but not to an extent that it significantly impacts convenience and what work she may need to do. You try to get her to install and work with linux, she goes along with it until her job starts wanting her to send word documents, edited pdf files, or scientific results from specific sorts of software that only are compatible with Windows. In desperation, you install wine, where you're basically running a windows OS on her linux box. She deals with a million tech issues like this inherent to linux, and many have fixes, but it doesn't matter. Eventually she gets tired of this and installs Windows. Now you have a Windows device running in your home with all that entails. Sure, you can sit there and say "well she should have blah blah blah" or "just marry a tech person LOL" but let's be real here, these are all unrealistic answers. Even if you managed to find the perfect companion to do all of that, you have kids who then go to a public school. The school gives said child an iPad or laptop loaded with Windows 11 to take home. They are required to use this for homework and classes. You protest or offer to provide your own device, the school and teacher deny it. Again, same situation and this is assuming you've landed in a perfect situation where everyone in your family is willing to use linux. Outside factors will FORCE you to take home a windows or apple device. You can solve this scenario as well (by home schooling for instance) but there are a million situations like this that will eventually compel you or wear you down. So what do you do? You can live like a hermit, but if that's the option is that even living? The most bitter pill we all have to accept is that you really can't escape the surveillance. The best you can do is mount as capable a defense as possible and wait for society to shift to where it finally values privacy enough to start frightening CEOs of tech companies.

@@mgh7634 the last paragraph sums up your reply perfectly. It's pretty much my line of reasoning. Yesterday was Holocaust memorial day. In the 1920, before the rise of the Nazis, lists of assumed homosexuals were compiled by the police. Like in most other countries, being gay was illegal in Germany, but the police rarely acted on these cases for lack of evidence. And then the Nazis took power and got hold of those lists......... Don't be naive. The wrong bunch gets into government and things can get nasty. I'm not referring to the likes of Trump and his ilk. 1Password discontinued Knox, their disk encryption software, primarily due to a shift in their business focus and changes in macOS features. Here are the main reasons: 1. Redundancy with macOS Features: Apple introduced and improved its built-in disk encryption solution, FileVault, making third-party encryption tools like Knox less necessary. FileVault became a reliable and widely used feature, reducing the demand for Knox. 2. Focus on Core Products: AgileBits, the company behind 1Password, decided to concentrate its resources on 1Password, their flagship product. This focus allowed them to enhance 1Password’s features and expand its offerings across multiple platforms instead of maintaining a niche encryption tool. 3. Limited Market for Knox: As encryption tools became more integrated into operating systems, the market for standalone encryption software like Knox declined. Maintaining Knox would require ongoing development resources without sufficient user demand. 4. Evolving Security Standards: Knox was based on macOS frameworks that became outdated over time. To keep Knox relevant, AgileBits would have needed to invest heavily in modernizing the software, which they decided against in favor of focusing on 1Password. The discontinuation of Knox was part of AgileBits' strategy to prioritize their password management platform and ensure it remained competitive in a growing market.

I've tried and tried explaining it to people and most look at me blankly. AI cores are going to become commodity parts very soon that any company will be able to jam into their SoCs. They will start getting stuck into everything and there will be no way to hide. You plug your PC, even with Linux, into a screen with an embedded AI processor and it could literally scan the contents of the display stream, process it, store it in cheap internal flash memory, wait for a connection to the outside world via a friendly BLE mesh network, and boom - no privacy. No Copilot needed. It really would be a "monitor" then in the most literal sense.

This is exactly the kind of threat model I've been thinking about. As prices go down they will be included in pretty much all components of all consumer devices. Everything will be "smart". Every player will be pilfering every bit of data out of people they can. Look at how obsessed almost every company seems to be with getting in on the AI trend. This kind of scenario seems not only likely but almost inevitable to me. The only hope might be if the public somehow becomes privacy aware and that some company has a true privacy focus, not a fake one like apple, and builds systems that are open sourced at every level.

You're also missing a few things in this video. 1. These new neural processors or powerful GPUs aren't needed for running this kind of AI on your hardware. They can already run in the background of existing hardware without you noticing. Technology has been changing for quite a while now in a way that makes it easy to hide this kind of AI in the background of older hardware without being noticed by end users. 2. Linux isn't always going to be safe. We already had an incident just several months ago where a large open-source project had a back door surreptitiously put into it by a malicious foreign government that would've widely compromised the security of every Linux distro out there because they nearly all used that project somewhere in them. It was only a fluke that a very attentive Microsoft noticed a very tiny CPU usage increase under very specific circumstances that he dug deeply into that he discovered the open source project had been compromised right under the noses of the thousands of contributors to the project, and had that engineer not looked as thoroughly into it, it would never have been spotted and it would've been in production for months already. The fact that that happened suggests that we have no reason to believe that Linux hasn't already been compromised in a similar way that nobody bothered to notice. The only thing we know for sure is that specific way of compromising the open source project wasn't used in other projects on that one repo service. The people working on open source projects are not security experts any more than your grandma getting a scam call from someone pretending to be their grandkid in jail is a security expert. There are not enough qualified eyes to identify when an open source project is compromised. Open source is not security any more than security through obscurity is security. Don't be fooled by the security theater that is open source. It's just one layer of a security onion that you can review the code yourself. But you're unlikely to be able to spot an actual security flaw yourself. I'm a security analyst professionally, and I've seen malware that you wouldn't even be able to see malicious code in if you disassembled or decompiled it yourself. The only way you would know it was there is by meticulously and painstakingly going through one machine code operand at a time and executing it "on paper" by hand with the various possible inputs to the code _AND_ knowing in detail exactly how the targeted CPU physically performed each operation in-circuit. Otherwise, you'd only see a completely benign executable that had no malicious code in it whatsoever. People working on open source projects largely have no clue how to secure those projects against the kinds of forces arrayed against breaking security because they don't have that level of knowledge or expertise, but the people working to violate your privacy absolutely do have access to that level of knowledge and expertise.

Exactly I've always hated that people equate open-source being this gold standard for security lol it's better than proprietary software but like you said someone has to actually audit it and they have to fully understand what they're looking for and most devs aren't security experts. The government is forbidden from doing that; but there's very little, especially in the USA that stops private businesses from doing the same.. Worse, once the data is collected, it can be then SOLD to the government without a warrant ( or handed over ) . Why do you think that the government allows this to happen? Simply put, because this is a work around for pesky search warrants which require evidence of wrong doing before the warrant is allowed; but the government can take tax dollars to buy the same data outright and is considered perfectly legal. Forget about politicians fixing this either; politicians only serve themselves, not their constituents. And politicians love power; and warrantless searches thru buying data with taxpayer money gives them more power...

This is the danger. That the pursuit of privacy can also harm your life. As a foster carer, I have to put my kid first. I had a dumb phone and had to get rid of it in favour of an Android or Apple. Why? Have to pay for school lunch order? That's an app. Want to pay sports fees? That's an app. When his game? That's an app. Want to catch up with his friends? That's an app. He was socially isolated due to my not wanting to give data to billionaires so I had to ease up on it. Oh... I want to avoid being burned to death by getting a warning about a local bushfire? That's an app. Everyone needs to decide what level of privacy won't ruin their lives and aim for that. Just like with cyber security. The best way to be secure on the internet is not to have the internet. The way to have privacy is to not have a phone and not have friends. When I watched the young persons in a recent Samsung personal ai commercial, their reactions were how I reacted at that age to new science tech, excited and can't wait, and dismissing any fear-mongering as from non-understanding persons; however, over the decades I have gotten wiser and seen how these things are abused over and again, and as you say, Rob, to be feared how some abuse it - you are not really fearing the tech, but the minds behind it. But how I remember being teen/twenties/thirties and excited for all new tech things; I would have run to buy such an phone with such a personal ai. What I thought I wanted then, I really don't want now because of all the hidden bad I have seen does really happen.

A better tact : Use a KVM and two or more computers; keep work off to itself completely as work. Switch between the computers when you need to do personal things; and work. If you use your personal email for work, create an alternate email for your personal use. Always good to segregate work off to its own place; I don't even let my work computers on the same network as my personal machines; work computers are treated as if the machines are guest machines or IOT devices.

You're correct. But also think with your brain here, a cracked Office probable has a keygen or some other "dodgy" element in it which gets detected by scanners. It's less to stop advanced people, and more to put kid gloves on the retarded masses (the average end user). If you somehow had an official installation of it, it's not gonna get blocked. I know this because we have had to install legacy office in our workplace. Also, if you were around in 2007 or even remember using Office 2007 back when it was common, you should have enough brain cells to figure out how to bypass any restrictions you want. Office 2007 is my weapon of choice, amazing set of programs - you have good taste.
