This variant worked well for the coach Jacek Gmoch a year earlier during Poland tour of South America and Gmoch decided to repeat it. The Argentines were supposed to play downfield, and - according to the coach - the fast and agile Kasperczak was better suited to such a game than the tall, powerful and less agile Gorgon.

Brasil teve muita sorte contra a Espanha. Se Cardeñosa marcasse o gol no final, o Brasil ficaria fora da primeira fase. Porém, Brasil conseguiu passar como segundo e teve um desempenho melhor até o final do torneio.
