You're talking about the massacre itself? Sadly Brazil also suffers with police violence, daily, not only on the suburbs. It's racial biased, framing is continuous. Imagine on Carandiru, then the biggest prison in whole country, in such precarious and loose conditions. All that environment needed to explode as hell was triggered that day, the only difference for any day before was that it had the fatal sparkle. We had our ups and downs since 2003 (the year Carandiru was released), but still have a very intricate reality, which most of my fellow citizens guess would be solved with more and indiscriminate use of force - turning, for instance, Elite Squad, a massive blockbuster mainly for the wrong reasons and misinterpretation... said by the director himself. Mind we were once an Empire (no exaggeration, it's literally that between 1808 and 1888) which received 10 times more enslaved black people than United States - and never had a decent public policy to include these people in economy. We're also very highly race mixed and these all were structured mostly in the same racist and institutional fashion in american south states. To let it worse, we kept being a third world country up 20 years ago, whe. We started a very delicated, but strong shift - that suffered a turmoil in least 8 years. Then, with this complex history and giant portions of relegated population, we historically face an even worse Human Rights situation than US. The criminal organizations are drug dealing based, selling to Europe and USA. The bandits take advantage on this social mess, also profiting through sistematic police and polititian corruption - not to say last years extremist ideologies... Yeah, Brazil is sill known for samba, football, carnival... but it's much more than that, for better and for worst.
@Marina-nn4md8 ай бұрын
you mean, what started the riot? no, it's like drauzio (the doctor in the movie, he is real, and he wrote a book called carandiru station) wrote; the surviving prisoners and the police each tell a different story. it might've been a fight over the results of a soccer match between the inmates, it might've been a pointless fight over laundry. no one knows for certain. they were also never able to pinpoint who gave the order for the cops to shoot, was it the chief of the police, was it one of his subordinates, was it the state governor himself? however, it is a fact that this was an election eve, and the governor of the state of sao paulo was seeking reelection so he needed a quick solution... and by morning of the election day, 111 inmates turned up dead. you can't say that it was an impopular decision. that governor was reelected in a landslide, and the chief of police eventually got exonerated from his post in the force, but he never served a day in prison for it, and when he decided to run for congress, he was one of the most voted congressmen to be elected that year. his number on the ballot was 111, the number of deaths in the carandiru massacre which he displayed as a badge of honor.
@gotasintrospectivas8 ай бұрын
Hi, the doctor is based on a beloved famous doctor Drauzio Varella, who worked in prisons in Brazil and wrote the book that inspired this movie. As for government, Brazil is a democratic country, with a solid constitution. That massacre is absolutelly illegal, but that is a lot of corruption and racism within governments, police, congress, senate so unfortunatelly this kind of thing happens, too often the people behind face no consequences. To this day, many people, mostly white, think that police was right because the life of a criminal, no matter their circunstances, has no value.

Um lugar onde uma mulher foi morta espancada por policiais no hospital pq ela não tinha dinheiro pra pagar atendimento e se recusou a sair de lá. This movie is based of a book by the same name written by the doctor Drauzio Varela, that is represented in the movie. He has worked in prisons for years (30+ years I guess) and he wrote about what he lived taking care of the prisioners and everything that happened before the rebellion and the massacre that happened in Carandiru in 1992. He also has other books published about prison life (Prisioneiras and Carcereiros), he’s a very well-known and beloved doctor here in Brazil! He has a channel here on KZbin about health.

I might add that most of the things that are shown in the movie actually happened, including the part where the police made the prisoners sit naked overnight (there are photos on google). This massacre is one of the most shameful actions of the Brazilian police in our history. Nowadays, in the place that Carandiru was located, there’s a park (parque da juventude - Youth’s park), but the heavy energy is still there. I’ve been there once and it feels horrible.

At the time, Brazil, as well as the state of São Paulo, were governed by people linked to right-wing parties. Fluery (government of SP), despite having a law degree and fighting for the redemocratization process in Brazil, was a relative of one of the most nefarious agents of the Brazilian dictatorship. Collor, the president at the time, defaulted on the people, deepening the Brazilian financial crisis, and even though he was deposed, he managed to return to political life in Brazil. The Brazilian police has always been the most violent in the world, it is the one that kills the most and dies the most, Brazil has a number of deaths with firearms almost in the same proportion as a country at war. The film, above all, is a denunciation.

Yes! It is a hard pill to swallow, but it depicts real memories of Dr. Drauzio Varella and the patients he treated. To complement this movie, you may react to the most significant Brazilian rap group: "Racionais MCs - Diario de um Detento". It is a known video clip with actual footage from the jail, which was shut down in the 2000s to become a huge public park. I know your channel is about films, but the clip is very well produced, and the lyrics were written with the aid of a guy who survived that day. They actually went inside, to record with the inmates. There are a couple of gruesome pictures from the massacre, but usually KZbin doesn't block it.

This movie reflects how is the prisional system in Brazil until today. I understand your dificulty to follow the characters, but this was intentional for two reasons: first because this film is like a book writen in first person, so think how the doctors will tell the story of 7500 prisioners, you will don't developt much of the characters. The second reason is that the intention of the movie was to humanize the prisioners and the best way to do this in brazilian context is you tell many stories and with this explain that the prisioners are human being too. This was because here in Brazil we have decades of intense propaganda of news media and TV against the human rights for people who suppousedly have commit any crime. By the way, i want to thhnk you so much for react to our cinema and to respect so much our culture. Keep going please :D

The cinematography, acting and direction are SO well done. Definitely worth the time. And if you want some comedy, there's the "My Mom is a Character" trilogy. O terceiro se chama "Durval Discos", também numa pegada comédia que vai ficando sombria e surrealista, tem um ar meio Felini a medida que vai chegando ao final.
