The Brazilian military dictatorship might not be currently considered a universal topic, but it should! I think it’s about time the US acknowledged their part in the military coups that most countries in Latin America suffered and how similar the conditions were in all of them. It’s universal to us and it should be to the rest of the world. Furthermore, I believe the topic of fascism and oppression is pretty current too! Just see the effect the nominations and wins I’m Still Here is having on the Brazilian far right. It means something! It matters and it talks to the world when it comes to the waves of hate going on and how the elections in the US impact us all. Brazil is not free from fascism and neither is the rest of the world!

I'm Brazilian and I'm very happy for the recognition this film is gaining around the world. A true story that, far from raising a political flag, deals with universal elements such as family, love, resilience and, mainly, missing those we love. Congratulations on the content and success to the channel.

It’s surely a political movie. Against the far right threats that are not only in the past, but pretty much present today. It is a movie for us Brazilian and the rest of the world not to forget or relativize the past, the military dictatorship, and the fear they still spread nowadays. That’s precisely what it means to still being here. And we will continue here with no relativization or political “neutrality”.

I am also a Brazilian, and I just watched the movie last Sunday. I am 53 and I kind of lived in that period of the military dictatorship in Brazil. I remember a few details from when I was a kid about my family interactions when it came to politics. I remember my father and my mother whispering about politics and sometimes I would ask, “what are you guys talking about? What is that?”, and my mom would made a sign for me to be quiet. It is the year of 2025, and just now I understand perfectly why they were so afraid. They were afraid someone was listening to whatever they were talking about, but at that time we used to live in a small city and I really don’t think someone was outside listening to them. After 20 minutes into the movie, I couldn’t stop crying. It was emotional in so many levels and it makes me think about something even sadder, the present/ future is here, 2025 some people in Brazil want the military dictatorship to come back. Are the far-right cult everywhere serious?

I'm Still Here is not about a specific moment in Brazil history only, is about the world history. The brazilian dictatorship happened in the context of Cold War, something that was affecting the entire world and more important, the dictatorship in Brazil was estabilished with the support of USA, even financially. Actually it happened all over Latin America, dictatorships were estabilished, people were imprisoned, tortured, murdered with tottaly support of United States because they feared communism. So Brazil context is not isolated at all.

So, Brazil has a quite selection of movies. From comedy to drama, from action to romance. Movies about Rio's violence, movies about the struggles of the northeast, movies about Carnaval, movies about corruption. You can pick. You love romance? Lisbela e o Prisioneiro. You love action? Tropa de Elite. 1 and 2, the second one being the best one. Oh, you like comedy? Minha Mãe é uma Peça. There are 3 movies with our beloved and missed Paulo Gustavo. How about drama? Carandiru. You want a social critical movie? Que Horas Ela Volta. Oh, you want criticly aclaimed? Central do Brasil and Cidade de Deus. O Homem que Copiava. But what about series? Well, my friends, we looooove series. From mini series to novelas, there are TONS. We can be here a while talking about those... But one of the few that broke our brazilian social bubble is Hilda Furacão. Hold on to your hats, Brazil is coming.

Brazil mentioned, I'm here!! And what a movie!!! As Selton Melo (who played Rubens Paiva) said, since the catharsis doesn't happen in the movie (Eunice Paiva can't show her pain in front of her children), the catharsis happens inside the viewer. It fits perfectly with my experience, I cried a lot watching this movie.

SOME INFORMATION 💎 Fernanda Torres's mother, Fernanda Montenegro was the first latin actress nominated to the Oscar of Best Actress (Katy Jurado and Norma Aleandro had already been nominated as Supporting Actress) and, to date, she was the only Portuguese-spoken actor nominated to the award, but her daughter just to repeat this. That was in 1999, with the movie Central Station, also directed by Walter Salles and nominated to Best Foreign Language Film. 💎 Fernanda Torres, Selton Mello and Fernanda Montenegro played in Four Days in Septemper, brazilian movie nominated to the Oscar of Best Foreign Language Film in 1998, also about brazilian dictatorship period. 💎 Fernanda Torres, aged 20, won the award for Best Actress at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival by the movie Love Me Forever or Never (tied with Barbara Sukowa, by Rosa Luxemburg). She was the first brazilian actress (of two) to win an award in Cannes. The second one was Sandra Corveloni that, coincidentally, was directed by Walter Salles. 💎 Fernanda Torres was the fourth brazilian actor nominated to Golden Globe, but the second with a Portuguese-spoken performance. The first one was her mother. The other nominees were Sônia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman, Moon Over Parador and The Burning Season) and Wagner Moura (Narcos). 💎 Fernando Torres, father of Fernanda Torres (yes, they got the same name), played in Kiss of Spider Woman (4 nominations to the Oscar 1986, William Hurt won Best Actor) 💎 I'm Still Here is the fourth movie of Walter Salles to be nominated to the Golden Globe of Best Foreign Language Film: Central Station won, and the other nominees were Behind the Sun and Motorcycle Diaries. And it was the second to be nominated to the Oscar in the same category. Central Station was the first. 💎 Fernanda Torres gained a pop star quality in Brazil because her performances in the sitcoms Normal People and Slaps and Kisses.

Brasil has such big productions in movies and tv series. We have such a rich culture, history and our people are very unique. Our culture is very unique. Fernanda Torres said something very interisting: we feel isolated for being the only country in america that speaks portuguese? yes, but we also feel very sorry for the gringos that dont have the pleasure to know what we know. And we are rooting like crazy, 3 nominations are already a win, but we want to bring the best actress home bc Fernanda Montengro shoul've won, now, at 95 years old, she has to see her daughter bring the Oscar home. (Also the oscars are gonna happen in the middle of our carnival, so we are ready to party)

Torres' performance has elements yet to be seen in big productions. She delivers an innovative and creative form of acting that we will see more often from now on. She may get the Oscars for her character in "I'm Still Here," but they haven't come up with an award for her talent. She has an extremely high level of intelligence and wit. She's genius.

As a Brazilian, we are very proud for the 3 nominations! Thanks for the comments! Hollywood movies are technically superior, maybe, but are superficial and repeats the stories, in some way. The academy should be more open to foreign movies, which brings novelties and universal themes. I would recommend a movie called Pra Frente Brasil, which was filmed during the amnesty period, by the end of the Brazilian dictatorship, and it talks about the unfairness, violence and fear that were experienced at the time. I would also recommend Flores Raras, a true story that happened in Rio de Janeiro during the 50s and 60s. It talks about the relationship between American poet Elizabeth Bishop and Brazilian architect Lota de Macedo Soares.
