I love BJJ team patches. It’s a cool thing to let people know what school/lineage you are. maybe being in the air force makes me like patches even more. A lot of these extra patches can be sponsorships.

I like patches as a symbol of school pride, but at the same time I always thought a uniform without patches always looked cleaner. But got no problem wearing the school/organization patches that represent the art I practice

I'm currently sewing on the patch from my original gym to the back of my gi. In addition to sentimental value, IMO, they laid the rock solid foundation on which my current professors have built on. I'm still going to sew my current gyms patch onto my gi, tho. Right over the heart since, they're so much like my original gym that I love them the same. When I'm old af, I want to be able to look at my old busted up gi collection and see the story of my BJJ journey represented through the patches on my old battle pajamas.

Back in the late 80s, my Okinawan Kenpo dojo in Hawaii used to have school lapel patch, federation patch on left arm,, Kobudo patch on right arm and a big federation patch on the back (with black uniform). But after I moved to the mainland, they changed to white uniforms with only a school patch on lapel. In my own training, when I wear a gi, I use no patches. Not out of any judgement, just that there's no need as I'm training on my own now.

As a taekwondo and bjj practitioner, I personally prefer either a completely patchless uniform, or at most the country flag and Academy Insignia.

Before I earned my black belt I put patches on my Taekwondo uniform. After I got my black belt I started only putting the flags on my sleeves at the shoulder. Now I tend to not patch them up but I have had my KZbin channel's name and logo added to the back of a uniform top and the name down the right side of the leg. Just for visibility if I chose to wear it to a tournament.

My kung fu uniform was just a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt with the school logo on it. I got a lot of mileage out of those t-shirts. The one other component of the uniform that I absolutely hated were the cotton kung fu slippers. How in the world are people supposed to fight wearing slippers? I would always slide around the gym, lose my balance, and twist my ankles when I had to wear those things. They don’t even hold together well (being made of fabric after all) so everyone would eventually end up holding their slippers together with duct tape. It became a joke throughout different regional seminars and tournaments - my school would show up with our feet wrapped in duct tape, ready to boogie.

When I took over teaching, it was because my instructor was leaving the area to be closer to family. The Grand Master he was affiliated with was six hundred miles away, and I had only met him a dozen or so times. Me being an individualist that had picked up a bunch of things a bunch of places, it wasn't long before cracks in that relationship turned into fissures and ultimately it broke. The one thing I always felt that I got from the connection that I missed when it was gone was being able to push off rank testing on someone else. When that division broke, I divided out my curriculum into different parts that could be taught in parallel. This had a huge advantage that I could more-or-less tailor an individual's lessons to their needs and personality. It had the huge disadvantage that I had to figure out how to compare ranks between someone that knew the whole of one sub-curriculum against someone that knew half of all of them. For a while, I considered using patches for ranking instead of belts. I decided against it for a few reasons (read, money reasons) but I've often felt like it would have made more sense in a lot of ways.

The BJJ patching really put me off for years. NASCAR reference is on point. By happenstance I found a gym that started as a Japanese JuJitsu and grown into BJJ so the plain white GI is prominent. It was my much delayed entry into BJJ. But all in all don’t let patches dissuade you. They might look gaudy like gold chains and rings on a track suit, but the aren’t and culture is well worth it.

What I like about the Gracie Academy is that they always kept it simple. Plain white with the option of just the school patch on your chest and/or back. But now even they're going a bit overboard. They probably have more uniform versions than Fuji Sports at this point.

Bujinkan only has 5 belt colors(based on most shihan) but at belt is taught in sections or multiple kuys in that color. so the stars and patch let teacher of all ranks know where your at and what your working on. It more for 1000's of hatsumi's shidoshi and shihan can just walk up and know what part that student is working on. A teaching tool.

The Gracie Barra Gi - wouldn't say those are patches. That's just what the uniform looks like. I don't think people are sewing extra patches on it... But where BJJ does have it beat is the goofy shifts that say "tap or snap" or "Neon Belly."

Usually, alternative patches on uniforms, and high level black belt ranks with/using belt striping, are only to be worn at the home dojo. I have been taught it is common etiquette to wear a plain gi, and a simple black belt whenever visiting another dojo...unless you have been invited to host that particular training session.

Over the years there has really been on one school I attended where patches were even a consideration at all and that was when I was attending a local Hwa Rang Do school. We were expected to wear two patches, on one each arm. On the left upper arm was the Korean Flag representing the Korean roots of the style and on the right upper arm was an American Flag. Beyond that the subject in that school was never really talked about. When I was studying Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu it was never talked about at all, I don't even remember anyone ever bringing it up. Personally I don't really care one way or another, although I do think I can be overdone and I have seen people whose Gi, or other uniform looked more like a conglomeration of patches held together by bits of fabric but if they are in an environment where there is no rule against it then it's really up to personal preference.

I'm a simple man...a plain white or black uniform. As far as patches go...school patch either on my left chest and/or on the back and that's it. The only exception would be a flag patch near my shoulder on my sleeve. With regards to my jiu-jitsu uniforms I only buy brands that don't have their company logo splattered all over, which is getting harder and harder to find. If I were to ever open up another school I would be the same with my students.

My kid’s school utilizes patches for confidence boosters and more of a visual aid ask to where the student stands skill wise. Like what weapons they’ve tested with and the number of katas they’ve passed. It’s more of a quick reminder for the sensei or even visiting sensei to know that students level beyond their belt rank. I actually think that’s a pretty cool idea for a quick reference.

The comment seems to have been deleted, but I don't disagree with you. There shouldn't be as many 9th or 10 degrees as there are, but that isn't anything unique to America. That can apply to a lot of systems worldwide. My point was, some of them, whether you agree they should have the rank or not, can walk the walk. I've personally encountered them.

To initiate I totally agree Sensei Dan, that so long as your uniform is neat and presentable, it does not matter as to whether it has patches or not. Also so long as it is within the regulations of the organisation, dojo, or tournament organisers, then I do not see why one or various patches on a gi or martial arts uniform in general, should matter. In Japan once a world class Judo exponent, was disqualified after many of his opponents, had complained that his Judo gi, was slippery to grip and hold onto, as if he had applied some sort of grease or vaceline type of substance all over it. So clearly the officials disqualified him, upon close inspection of his uniform. Some Karate schools complain even about, other Karate styles who happen to embroid the name of their style, on the gi jacket or and or gi pants as well! To me it is nonsensical as each style should have the right to embroid whatever they like on their uniforms, plus a badge, or two or more if they so choose to do so. In the end their skill, morals and honourable representation of their respective art is what matters most. At my first two Kyokushinkaikan Karate dojos, we wore the traditional, embroidered Kyokushin Karate, white gi, with our own Kanku and name of our specific Kyokushin Karate dojo, embroidered and worn on the left shoulder of the gi's jacket. At my current dojo our Shihan (master) does not like them and dismisses them all together. Yet Sosai Oyama Masutatsu himself had authorised the light blue embroidered 'Mas Oyama Kyokushin Karate ' Kanku gi patches to be embroidered on the left side of our gi's jacket. Kancho Matsui Shokei of IKO1, as well as those of other organisations, also have their own, individual versions of the Kanku gi patches. To me personally I like the gi patch, as it distinguishes one individual dojo from the rest, even within the same Kyokushinkaikan Karate Organisation. So my overall opinion of gi patches, is not a bad one, but rather a positive one as it is similar to a family crest, which chronicles the particular history of that school, group, style or association. Even Sensei John Kreese and his evil Cobra Kai have a few patches on their black and gold, Karate competitions gis lol 😆🇲🇽🇦🇺🥋👍🤟✌.

I am not exactly fond of patches because of how it could be a telltale sign of our abilities, and in what I at least teach for techniques, you don't want enemies to be able to discern what your abilities are even in a dojo setting for sparring matches. Surprise is a great tool needless to say.

Hold on, that is a different argument. BJJ is not ideal for a street fight but if the fight goes to the ground it IS good for doing damage and getting right back up. It doesn't matter if there was one incident...it doesn't judge an entire martial art at a whole, it just means a decision was made in a certain situation. Do you have a link to the news article?
