With all due respect, without ensuring the strings are the same, it isn’t a fair comparison. I’m all for comparing different models, wood types, etc but the strings have to be the same. All the same, great to hear some Brazilian Rosewood.

Great video, love vintage Martin guitars especially the D-28. For me personally, always will favor Rosewood over other woods due to the warm tone and is most pleasing from a visual standpoint. Cheers

Agree completely. Here they have two vintage Martins with dead strings, WTF. Do they really expect a potential buyer to be satisfied with two classic axes that sound dead? C'mon Paul, Guitar Center is notorious for having expensive acoustics with dead strings. Surely you can do better than this!

Well, for a tenth the price of the D-45 Brazilian I have a CS-Bluegrass-2016. Think of it as a cross between Quinton's large soundhole HD-28 and a D-28 Authentic 1937. Or, like a D-28 GE in Guatemalan rosewood, but using VTS Adi top and braces stuck together with hide glues. Thanks for this video Paul!

Love these guitars, guys! I've come to a theoretical conclusion I want a DC-35E, tho. I wanna try and compare different models. What do you think?
@texhaines99574 жыл бұрын
Nice comparison. Just remember the new one has Sitka Spruce and an adjustable truss rod. The other two have a lollipop truss rod. Still, if properly set up, I like the 1963, but I'm more prone to a 1937 D-28 Authentic...thanks Quinton and Paul (in a blue Acoustic Letter shirt)

Please set a fresh set of string on the 54 & 63 and perform the comparison again. I'm sure 54 will win, at least in my ear, anyway it all rady won. With the old string the 54 sounds more like a gibson. love Martin & Gibson 😊 Thanks for showing us all the beautiful guitars 👍

Great demo. Just two Bozeman boys sitting around, holding, playing guitars in one session that most of will never get a chance to play in a lifetime (at least not ALL three of 'em!). We liked it. Probably could've played "hooky" for another 15 or more minutes, listening and getting close-ups of these.

Oh my gawd!!! And then you have the opportunity to abc three iconic guitars and then you don't even bother to put fresh strings on them to create a level playing field. Really..... The 1963 stands out though! Imagine how it would sound with fresh strings, proper set up and no talking!
@dantheman3483 жыл бұрын
Put new strings on all of them and do it again. Plus, if you raise the action on a Martin, even just a tiny bit, it will increase the volume a TON. More tension on that sweet top=more volume and wood sound. I have a 1970 and 1961 d-28 and the action height, even just a couple thousandths if an inch, changes tone significantly. My 61 with new strings, id die before I let anything happen to that guitar, there isn’t anything that sounds as good.

According to my so-so ears: The 1963 sounded nice but I am not fond of 1960s Martins in general (I've played a few and most of them were uninspiring). The 1954 is wonderfully seasoned but doesn't seem as balanced as the 2017. The 2017 D-45 sounds very nicely balanced though the top isn't unusually resonant. I would choose the 2017 D-45 (if I had that amount of discretionary funding). I respect everyone's thoughts here as they all sound different and what sounds good to someone might not be as appealing to someone else. I liked this video. It was nice to hear three different sounds from three different eras of the same builder.

Listen. As long as the guitar is made from hide glue. You can have free reign over improving it. But as soon as a guitar is made from resin. It takes dramatic alterations to not only repair but improve it. Stick with hide glue. Every instrument if we can. But thats not feasible If they are still struggling to improve the modern martins. One. It takes decades for the guitar to show how it changes over time. Two. I suspect they arent using knives. Sanded wood vs cut wood are two completely different things.

No matter what they say about using super-young growth, I just can't stand the idea of trading in endangered species :/
@HenryPipes4 жыл бұрын
I think you mean old growth. If these were actually young growth they would be illegal. There is nothing wrong with using wood cut before 1969 as long as you have documentation to prove it. The tree has already been cut down for 50 years. Why not make a beautiful sounding guitar out of it instead of just leaving the wood there to deteriorate?

Wow, all guitars sounded really bad, not a lot of detail in the recording, the mic is way too far and the room doesn't sound acoustically right. Sometimes the microphone placement is way more important than woods, years and trademarks. But is the first time I hear this kind of sound in this channel.
