Brazilian wandering spider (Phoneutria) handling

Small individual (adults get at least double this size) that showed up inside the cabin I was in, didn't have anything to catch it other than a cup so also handled it a bit :)
This is NOT a recomendation on how to capture wandering spiders or anything of the sort (even because obviously you should have both hands free), the point of this video is to show how they aren't the demons everyone believes them to be, they aren't agressive, defensive at most, even so no more than the majority of spiders. Most people would already consider themselves attacked if a spider run or jumps at them, but bite cases usually happens when they squish one without even seeing the spider first, like inside boots or on banana trees.

For example, I do know for sure that Black Widows are not that deadly and they are also quite docile, so handling them is not a great risk, but I don't know how Red Backs are by comparison. I also know that very few people handle Brazilian Wandering spiders or Sydney Funnel Webs... in fact... I've seen a few videos of people handling Funnel Web Spiders but not a "Sydney" Funnel Web or only the Sydney Female and never the male. I know people don't like to handle Brazilian Wandering spiders and Sydney Funnel Web Spiders because of the risks and because they can be very aggressive, unlike some other venomous spiders. I've handled a few spiders in my life like Tarantulas, Black Widows and Brown Recluses, but I would never try to handle a Funnel Web or a Brazilian Wandering species.

hagglefaen Yes. The wanderer doesn't have the most potent per volume venom. But it's like the Black Mamba. Extremely aggressive and when it does bite, it injects gargantuan volumes, making it in all practical terms, the deadliest spider. I think Redbacks have the most potent venom, but they have very low volume, one spider doesn't have enough venom on hand to kill a human. And often injects fractional in self defense which is painful as fukk. But seldom lethal.

I, too, love spiders. In fact, I have three pet black widows, in three separate terrariums, in my basement bedroom. As stated previously, black widows truly are incredibly docile, and can be handled freely, yet carefully, as they are also very fragile. It is their fragility that keeps me from handling them too often, not fear. Spiders can sense vibrations and frequencies, so, yes, they'll know if you're afraid of them, should you choose to handle them.

Yes it is a Juvy and is somewhat docile and slightly lethargic in cooler temps ..he shows no aggressive tatics because it is not perceiving any threat from its encounter...and probably is attracted by the warmth of his hands and arm...They to can understand and interpret such encounters...But when it is mature and the body fully developed including the markings on its legs and thorax ...become truly and distinctively aware of there surroundings..... They do not like sudden movements in close proximity.. There instinct as I have seen time and again is to vertically stand themselves up on there rear abdomen and pair there banded front legs both sides ...straight up ward as you see in this video... They will also sway back and forth as another warning during it defensive posture...most bites are neither fatal or very painfull... But some people do die thats a fact.But its up to the spider to determine your fate...as they control how much or how little venom you receive....or in some cases non at all.A bite on its own from the spider is enough to pursuade a good outcome for it without the use of its venom...remember your not on their menu ...but your movements and percived threats ...make it look like you are ...with runaway imaginations.. They are simply reacting to impulse ..perceive...react ...defend strike... Yes they are extremely dangerous but a fantastic species. If one can... one should try to remove it from the house as we see here in the vid and release it to thick foliage a good distance from the house...and get it back where it belongs riding us of and controlling...the many bugs and pests in our everyday lives... No matter how dangerous the spider is of any species...they are our friends ...all over the world they eat and remove billions of pounds of insects every year... what more could you ask for.

Spiders are not aggressive towards humans, they are defensive. Huge distinction there. If you go slow with them, and don't try to squish them, they are very unlikely to bite you unless you mess up and hurt them. Recognizing their body language is also a great thing to learn to see if the spider is viewing you as a threat, or if it's nervous, or if it does not give a shit about you. Go slow with the spiders and read them correctly then they will be totally cool with you and you can likely handle them. I have never once had a spider I've handled bite me before, or show any aggression once I've gained it's trust and treated it nicely. If you understand spiders and how they react to the world around them then you will NEVER get bit outside of an accident where you didn't see the spider and accidentally crushed the poor thing. Still, don't handle dangerous spiders like this unless you know damn well what you're doing and have access to medical treatment worst case scenario. Still, spiders aren't that scary and they are not aggressive towards humans, they are defensive. Poor little things just don't want a freaking mountain to crush them horribly.

Generally, the funnel-web spider will inject more venom per bite than the brazilian wandering spider, and as a species, are usually far more aggressive, often attacking anything that touches it, whereas the brazilian wandering spider is a little more calm

This shows that the aggressive Brazilian Wandering Spider are generally well more behaved than the Australian Funnel Web Spider, at least if handled carefully and properly as seen on this video, or if they were reared and trained properly while it's still young, as long as the spider don't feel threatened, but it's very rare, cause I've already seen a few bunch of other videos on youtube and Instagram showing people handling well behave Brazilian Wandering Spider, heck I've even seen a Brazilian Wandering Spider even larger than this one on this video which I presume it's a female which are known to be the one who are venomous that appears as equally as well behaved than on this one. Meanwhile, the Australian Funnel Web Spider will bite everything regardless if you'll handle it properly and even with utmost extreme precaution, you'll still wind up with one of the most unpleasant experiences ever.
