That third "superpower" is low key the most amazing thing ever. The fact that an animal the size of a fingernail is capable of problem solving on such a level is just mind blowing to me! They learn from their encounters and adjust their hunting strategies based on their experience. They study their prey's behavior and formulate plans of attack. That makes them quite some of the most intelligent animals on Earth! They have better problem solving skills than human toddlers.
@synchc Жыл бұрын
Later on in this episode or on another, I forget, Attenborough notes that other than big game cats these are the most impressive hunters he's ever come across. You can imagine how many hunters he's come across. They are doing all this (and a lot more besides, not covered here) with half a million neurons. We have about a hundred billion. Truly an amazing little critter.
@april5054 Жыл бұрын
an even more interesting tidbit is that the queensland population of portia fimbriata aren't just spider eating spiders, but _specifically_ hunt jumping spiders. you know, the smartest clade of spiders. those ones are even smarter than the ones that hunt web builders. they can imitate the specific vibrations made by a male of another jumping spider species to lure out the female of its nest to eat it, and even hunt jumping spiders that they can't see, by jumping until their well-camouflaged prey gives itself away by turning to look.
@BlooJay.mp4 Жыл бұрын
They might be even smarter than we think! Scientists recently discovered that (at least in some less intelligent species) jumpers experience REM sleep! The jumper's main set of peepers are moveable (just like ours), so scientists observed transparent spiderlings to see if they could detect eye movement inside their heads. Sure enough when the spiders went to sleep their eyes could be seen twitching! They also noted that other parts of the spider's body would twitch as well. This would suggest they might experience visual dreams just like we do. We don't know for sure yet though, not until we do the worlds smallest brain scan to confirm they dream lol These little guys are truly nature's best work.
@Psychosix4 ай бұрын
@synchc I think this is an example of evolution in action, and evolution can result in some pretty awesome things.. Eagle eyesight, lungfish survivability traits, crocodilians, sharks in general.. portia!
@rewinderon7074 ай бұрын
I don't think "most intelligent". Not because the spiders are dumb, they're quite smart, incredibly so! It's just I sincerely believe that humans tend to underestimate the intelligence of pretty much any animal except some mammals. The insects alone offer many, many thinkers. We see something like an anthill and just go "programmed behaviour" instead of noticing many bits of everyday problem solving employed by ants. We see fish learn to spew water at flies in the air by observing other fishes doing the same and go "instinct". This is just hubris. Intelligent systems are what surrounds us, and I think it's the dumber ones that are outliers (those who manage to find a perfect niche and cut on the resources going into developing a brain and a reasoning ability)

My husband is reading _Children of Time_ by Adrian Tchaikovsky, and I'm relatively convinced the author was inspired by Sir Attenboroug's narrative style, if not this exact nature clip. Watching this one I can't help but wonder if, given the oppt'y, she'd eat another jumping spider of her own specific kind. That would be cannibalism in the truest sense of the word This is only speculation, but maybe not. Hunting her very own kind would become a duel; not a hunt at all.
