what I wish people would know about carnival and brazil is that not every carnival is the same and not everyone can simply just go and participate like that. the one in rio the movie is a little unrealistic cause the female character is a regular dentist and suddenly she's front row dancing like a passista, that's not how it works guys lol. it's a competition so everything's gotta be close to perfect as possible and while there are a lot of members of the communities who get to walk for the parade, most of the well known dancers that people associate to samba are ACTUAL dancers. also you gotta have a crazy ass workout routine cause those type of costumes can weigh up to 30kg and its hella expensive and exclusive. regular people just hang out on the street, drink, watch shows and travel to the beach lmao and pretty much only rio and são paulo actively listen to samba
@TimeToSingChannel8 ай бұрын
Yeah, we are not always on samba, or on carnival, usually some people have to put in much effort to be accepted to dance in carnivals, 'cause the people must know how to samba pretty well because it's not easy and it's not "anyone" is able to do. And also as I see on movies and videos, even Americans or people from European countries also drink and use drugs a lot, it's not a thing that only Brazil does so I think it is really rude to think that only bad things happens in Brazil... Mostly of the American movies, we can see people drinking in red cups, having sex, having drugs, hookah and etc. And samba is not really played in São Paulo, we are commonly used to Funk and Sertanejo, now Rio I don't know because I'm not from there.
@GabiBraga28 ай бұрын

People do tend to romanticize certain destinations based on what they saw in movies. I think the most obvious example is the Paris syndrome that is experienced by Japanese tourists in France. As an Indonesian, I have to say that Bali is a great destination with beautiful nature and culture, but don’t expect to have _Eat, Pray, Love_ moments when you visit. Just enjoy the island as it is.

The samba school parade is a competition that began in 1932, each samba school chooses a theme to parade (it could be an honored person, a historical moment, a country, etc.). The judges judge and give scores for categories such as music, band, costumes, floats, enthusiasm, etc. There is a whole security scheme that even includes an armored car to transport the jurors' votes. Samba schools represent and are made up of people from communities, they train all year to parade, so there are people who only work in the carnival industry, but most of the people parading are regular people, but many famous people also parade because they paid a lot of money or because they were invited by samba schools to give visibility to the parade. In Rio de Janeiro, the most successful samba school is Portela, champion 22 times.

Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world. It is larger than the USA in continuous land and has 26 states plus the federal district. It has a population of 220 million people spread across this giant country. And everything that is shown in the media is: Rio de Janeiro with naked women, favelas, shootings, drugs, beaches, football, crimes and these types of things. The USA has more drug addicts and more types of drugs than Brazil, with horrible places where the police don't even enter; but everything shown on TV are clean places with well-dressed people, etc... . The USA makes everyone's minds around the world because they own the world's media.
@lcdh56018 ай бұрын
US media is full of drug addicts and crime, what are you talking about? There are whole shows about drugs or murder.
@fatboyRAY248 ай бұрын
Wrong. USA is larger than Brazil in any measurement. Yes we have more drug addicts, but when have we ever pretended not too? And if anything, there are more “pristine” places with “well dressed” people in the US than the movies will ever show you. Places that you can’t believe actually exist. Yes there are shootings and bad neighborhoods that the police use as “containment zones” to keep the rest of their respective cities “crime free”, so in other words instead of preventing crime, they simply concentrate it all into a single area. It is immoral, but it works I guess. However if Brazil is a standard of comparison for violence then those “containment zones” are like Heaven compared to a Brazilian Favela.

Bali is more of a Hindu and Buddhist culture while most of Indonesia is Muslim (= more intolerant. You have even regions like Aceh were due to Sharia law females/people get beaten in public if they 'violated some of the typical irrelevant/backward Sharia laws' - but fortunately most of Indonesia is not like that). Side note: while usually people in Bali are quite relaxed, many taxi drivers were in recent years very aggressive towards Uber drivers. Also interesting about Bali and the other Islands around is that it is part of a region with the most diverse maritime life which makes it a real interesting spot for every diver or people who like to experience a bit diving with amazing underwater views. Keep also in mind that Indonesia is a country which has about 17000 Islands (the biggest 'Island' country) which creates a lot of different regions/cultures in itself. While it is not true that Bali has a lot of jungle you have that in other parts of Indonesia - even still with a lot of isolated living indigenous people. Btw., a bit surprising for most might be that the country with most Islands is Sweden - over 260000 Islands!
