People tend to run with the strange assumption that soft surfaces can't do damage. Any amount of weight with some force behind it can cause real damage, especially to the head, it's all about how fast the head (or a loose part like the jaw in this case) is forced to move from the impact.

@@sgas i've caused inner ear tickles and ear canal pains to myself from habitually leaning my chin on my fist, elbow on desk. i forcefully broke that habit and my hearing is fine again. it's because i was a left-of-chin on fist leaner, which puts pressure on the upper mandible mastication muscles, which are also connected to your ear canal. damaging those muscles cause ear discomfort.

hi vinny as a tmj haver, it does sound to me like you have tmj. id look into seeing a tmj specialist if i were you. normal doctors don't actually know much about it.

Idk if you even look at the comments vinny but i have had TMJ for 20 some years, mildly dislocated. You might get referred to a dentist/specialist and get fitted for a mouth guard that'll help a lot of it. It's one that you can wear essentially 24/7 the only issue is you'll develop a lisp until you learn how to talk with it! I'm hoping you get the issue resolved soon though and you dont get pushed around from dr to dr rip.

@@RD-dt7us i couldve worded that better but idk if yt has a character limit, but idk what kind of tmj he has if its that, let alone if he'll even need the mouth guard. The one i have could be different than what he would get. I didnt develop it from an injury. The guard doesnt need to be worn 24/7, it just acts to prevent clenching and grinding to cushion the disks in the jaw 🤷 Also I'm not a doctor and i don't personally know vinny or condition so i didn't want to include anything unnecessary, but again i couldve worded it better whoops

A friend of mine was getting TMJ and said it was popping painfully to the point where he didn't want to even eat. He swears that all the doctors and jaw specialists he saw weren't helping, but one trip the chiropractor fixed it permanently. This sounds like the kind of thing your one friend says, who believes the plague can be cured by having your back cracked, but he doesn't go to them for anything else. This is just a thing he did once and brings it up quite frequently, but otherwise is wary of chiropractors.

It's a pseudoscience on par with crystal healing and homeopathy, and can actually be dangerous. The people who swear by it are the ones swearing by sugar pills: it's all placebo. Don't do it.

My fear is that some pain like that would happen to me, but I wont remember the incident or what caused it. So I'll just write it off as aging, and never get help.

For a while, I got punched in the face as a hobby and a short career and I’ve never had an issue. Vinny gets hit with an oversized qtip and is haunted by it for the rest of his life. Funny how life can be.

If you have wisdom teeth (Mostly those) since they occupy extra espace, they can make the area slightly bigger than it should be causing the jaw to not close properly (Due to proximity with the joint area), make more force or make a bite with terrible angle depending on the position of the tooth (any other tooth could do this too with less chance). That and a mild infection can both lead to swelling or/and muscle pain but only the infection could do nerve damage (usually doesn't since more likely it came from inside the body), the second theory is not the teeth but the jaw itself, where the jaw is connected to the skull usually under the ear (Why not), there is a nerve that goes inside the jaw itself, could be damaged overloaded, tired. The lastly is the bone but unless it didn't recover from a secret fracture then I doubt it. I used to have a sudden jaw crack, like stretching it and it would sound like a fracture with no pain, some times not followed by pain some would and further swelling, couldn't eat for days, getting the wisdom removed helped but do not assume it's the tooth although fuck them they are useless anyways... there is always the chance for a full body damage transplant.
