Some kids build a dam on a beach in Carbis Bay, Cornwall ... it's just a matter of time until the dam burst :o)

A physical geographer by undergrad who did heaps of this sort of thing as a kid - though not quite this impressive - this is quite fascinating. And a good practical lesson in avulsion starting to take place towards the end.

i am guessing that fluvial geomorphology is something to do with liquifaction
@oceanceaser448 жыл бұрын
Fluvial=water, geomorph=shaping the earth. Its the study of how water shapes and creates landscapes, and yes liquefaction is an important concept used

The video was shot at St Ives, Cornwall in the UK. The beach has a freshwater stream running onto it, and builds up a large head of water ... I think it took about an hour to fill up behind this dam. Great fun :)

HOW?? seriously how did you build this? wouldn't the sand go away faster that you could build?

Are you kidding me? Not one kid trying to go down that on a boogie board? That's what I'd be doing. Probably swallowing a lot of sand and saltwater in the process.

i used to make a river leading right to a pile of sunbathers when i was a kid. Super fun to catch them by surprise! Other times I would make it so the water went in the middle of them, then they fell onto it

@thaiikid The water is from a small stream that ran down the beach. The kids built a dam and waited for about 2 hours for a huge head of water to build up. I reccon if us grownups got involved we may have washed away half the beach :D

Oh man, the ideal sand dam building spot! High banks and probably a large reservoir behind that! The "kids" probably could have kept it up longer, but they just got bored and wanted to see an awesome breach. ;-)

This is an incredibly awesome video; you can see how the water will change the river or stream and take a different course with a matter of seconds which equivalents to many years. Really neat to see how the river and/or stream can change course in real time.

Whenever I went to the beach as a little kid, I would always love to dig holes near the water and build a channel to the water. Heck, I'd still do it if I got the chance. That's one of the things that sucks about living so far away from a large body of water. I'd have to travel half the state to get to a reasonable body of water.

Her feet are "slowly corroding away?" I guess they're made of steel or something. I noticed that the sand around her feet is ERODING away at the same time her feet are CORRODING away.

where is the water coming from?
@CCcrafted8 жыл бұрын
My thought exactly! Initially I thought it may have been a tidal pool or something but the sand would have levelled off and degraded any form of reservoir, so really I can only think of one alternative; perhaps it was fed from some kind of rainwater run off? It looks quite hilly in the background so it might be plausible?
@thinredline89398 жыл бұрын
Eventually it will wash the beach area they are sitting at away. The sand washes easier than hardened clay. This will be nothing much of a big flat spot where the sand will go more out in the water. That's if it gets worse. But you would be able to walk farther out into the water, because the sand is making it level out more. If you get what I am saying.
@CCcrafted8 жыл бұрын
+Noah's Ark yeah if the waves draw out the gradient to make it shallower (the island of jersey is a good example of this) although if the waves falling onto the beach are constructive waves then what ever actions done by this impromptu river will be undone if you get my drift?
