You don't need to take the cowel off. My st came with a white funnel that fits there. Is in the boot of the car next the the spare tire.

That funnel is for filling your fueltank with a canister. It bypasses the theft prevention mechanisms. Otherwise your fuel canister neck will get stuck in there.
