The Giro d'Italia's back from the rest day with a 196.2km stage from Scandiano to Viareggio. The route is far from flat, with 2,863m of climbing, but most of it comes in the opening half of the stage. Will the sprinters be able to make it to fight out a sprint finish?

The mechanic or soigneur or whatever he is who caused Bettiol to crash wins the Twat of the Day award not just for causing the crash but also for not accepting that he messed up and instead arsing about trying to make out that it was Bettiol to blame. But then Bettiol decides he'll have a go at second prize in that competition by standing there like a twat in the middle of the road while other riders barrel along as he had just been doing. No excuse for either of them. Both should admit their twattish behaviour and apologise.

Two people to blame for the crash. Bettiol shouldn’t be coming through the entire fleet of stopped support cars, in inclement weather, with low vis, bad braking surface etc, without think ‘Mmmm, I wonder why ALL the cars have stopped, maybe I shouldn’t be coming through them today at 40kmh). Road laws and road manners are such that your speed should cater for weather and road conditions and you should be able to react to any eventuality, in racing it shouldn’t be any different. Yes, the racing is all about the cyclists, but from a safety perspective it’s not just about them but includes all staff, organisers, press etc. A 50/50 accident. Staffer and Bettiol equally to blame.

Your assumption isn’t necessarily correct. Across the whole population, the average person would expect to be less sick due to the effects of prior exposure to native covid and vaccination. However, vaccination doesn’t stop you from getting it. It just helps you fight it. Every person reacts differently and research is showing that prolonged physical exercise and physical exercise with high loads whilst sick, significantly increases you risk of long term complications or long covid

Disappointed to see G Thomas start today wearing the Maglia Rosa. It was his, as Remco did not start, but it really was Remco's. Even Contador did not wear yellow after Tony Martin lost it. Froome declined to wear a jersey also. After today, it's his, if he can keep it, but for today, he should have declined.

IN eras past a rider would not simply put on the jersey without earning on the road. I recall Greg Lemond riding in team kit the day after Rolf Sorensen crashed out of le Tour in maybe 1991. His reasoning was to respect the Yellow Jersey by not taking it by default. I know there is big sponsorship money to have the jersey showing each day, but one should ask 'why is the leaders jersey special'? Hopefully, it is not because it creates a strong revenue stream, but rather because it has pedigree and is something worth respecting.

There are lots of ways to suppress Covid rates, without resorting to miserable lockdowns, and so few countries are bothering to implement any of them. Anyone can get long covid, and each reinfection comes with the risk of life changing illness, or other long-term damage. It's unsustainable. Good luck to Evenepoel in his recovery.

The uci/race organizers requires 0 testing, they can even still ride when positive. It's the team's medical team that decides if a positive rider should or shouldn't race.

They actually don't have to test and even if the test is positiv they are allowed to start. It's just not a good idea to start ill no matter what sickness. So Remco felt he's not 100% fit and he got an illness. Taking your body to the max while you're ill will just make it worse. It was a desicion of him and the team not uci or the giro team.

What sprinters? Mads, one of my favorite riders, but not an outright sprinter. Gavaria, I guess. Milan, hardly qualifies, even after winning a sprint stage. Groves, like Milan, to early to tell. Cav, be serious. All the fastest guys are racing elsewhere (again, sorry Mads, I love your style) and he hasn't even come close. Like 2021 TDF, the sprinting at this Giro is 2nd rate.
