Regarding the map at 0:54 - I immediately noticed it can't be from the 1830s. Due to various things. Like it featuring a transatlantic cable (from Ireland to Newfoundland, labelled "CABLE" on the map). Then I conducted an investigation (reverse IS didn't help; this was tricky) to locate the original picture of the map, or alternatively a different picture of the same map, to see what year it was actually made. I found a 8459x5125 scan the full map. The exact same map, but a differently sourced scan. The map - this particular copy of it - is titled: MAP OF THE WORLD, On Mercator's Projection, SHEWING THE GREAT OCEAN CURRENTS, THE TRACKS OF AMERICAN AND ENGLISH VESSELS, WITH THEIR DISTANCES FROM PORT TO PORT, and all Places of Commercial & Political Importance. To which is added Four Maps shewing the appearance of THE EARTH, AS SEEN ON THE MERCATOR AND SPHEROIDAL PROJECTIONS Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1874 by J.B. Beers & Co, in the office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington. So the map is from 1874, judging by that text. J.B. Beers & Co is the name of the map maker. The 8459x5125 scan can be found via _"An illustrated historical atlas of Gentry County"_ - on that "State Historical Society of Missouri" page. You can view the full resolution picture at _ttiinnyyuurrll 2ves6hwv_ - that's the 8459x5125 jpg in the exact same quality (not recompressed) as on that "Historical Society of Missouri" page. I found the map thanks to the "NEW SIRERIA" text in the top-right (the New Siberia islands). "SIRERIA" seemed strange so I looked into it, and doing so lead me to that "Historical Society of Missouri" page containing the map.

Also, there's Poland on the map. We were ereased from world maps, till 1918. So it's most likely an interbellum period one. Edit: Yea, I didn't notice the presence of Russian Empire there. This makes things a bit tricky, as by that time, Russia was already under Bolshevik control.

Given that Aperture remains untouched by Xen flora, it's possible that not every part of the US was overgrown. But it may have been enough for the Combine to decide that it wasn't worth it, and relocate all citizens to Eastern Europe.

it makes sense tbh. the countrysiders with all their guns would’ve kept the countryside largely intact whilst cities would be defended by the national guard and law enforcement but when the combine basically wipe all of them out, who’s gonna keep the xenians in check? precisely, nobody. the garrison has ALOT of earth to cover: best to cut your losses in the new world and relocate everyone to the old world.

Not too crazy, since they were developed in tandem for the most part, story-wise. It's more so that the expansions contained lore from HL2 before HL2 came out, given that Laidlaw has said repeatedly that he doesn't care about canon or consistency, especially not when it comes to others' writings.

In my headcanon, I think city 17 does not take place in bulgaria. Government buildings such as the hospital in episode 1 and white forest ICBM base use Russian words and letters, not Bulgarian. Also ICBM base is something that only exists in the former Soviet Union, and while Warsaw Pact countries do host Soviet nuclear weapons, they were air delivery types, and not silo launched from ICBM base. Countries that do use Russian Cyrillic and words were the former Soviet republics of ukraine, Belarus and obviously Russia, confirmed by some Soviet era advertisement in half life alyx. However, city 17 was located at the coast and has large mountains up north. Belarus is landlocked and doesn't have any mountains, this leaves us with Ukraine and Russia. While there are a lot of Ukrainian coastal cities that have similar architecture to city 17, they don't have any large mountains near the coast, the closest one was at southwestern part of western Ukraine, which is hundreds of kilometers away from the nearest coastal cities such as Odessa. Plus assuming half life 2 took place in 2000s, which is after the collapse of Soviet union and independence of Ukraine, which Ukrainian is the official language and mandated that government sign was written in Ukrainian, probably except for private buildings, which does not exist in city 17 and white forest. Russia is the only place that match the geography of city 17, because Russia has a coastal city that was located near Georgian border, obviously have coastlines, and have mountains up north, as well as government sign, advertisement, written in Russians. The presence of multiple eastern European languages might be due to presence of eastern European immigrants to Russia

Since Japan was unknown, I'm assuming either Japan was hit with something big that was seriously bad to potentially wipe it out, subsequentially taking out all outgoing signals, or Japan may have cut themselves off from the rest of the world to lay low from the whole situation. I wonder if they even had Combine interactions since the portal storm map didn't seem to have direct portal spots over the islands, just the radius of the Russian portals. Although it's likely there was contact post Combine takeover if Japan was still standing.

About the possible year the map was created in, there is one small problem there. Poland. Poland was ereased from existence, between 1795, and 1918. Before that period, since 1569, it was known as Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth.

7:57 as a russian, im 99% sure this is a real life ad, scanned. I distinctively remember seeing their logo (seen here in the top left corner) on tv and outside ads. Also, a small detail from cultural perspective, in the early 2000's it was normal to advertise your products were "made in europe" here in post-soviet countries, it immediately gave you the reputation of quality. So whe window systems being made in Austria is just an authentic nod to the reality of living in broke, poor post soviet environment. Because, again, I'm 99% sure this is a real ass ad.
