So sad, you did not go through Utah. Off seasons you don't need to make a reservation. There's Zions, Arches, Canyon Land, Dead Horse, Bruce Canyon, Horse shoe, and the famous Monument Valley. But, by far Yellow Stone is more likely to be the best bet due less traveling. Safe travels. Thank you for sharing. You are all awesome. ♥️ 😊

Sounds like turbo charger seals. Not a big deal as long as the turbo is able to be rebuilt otherwise a reman will be on the agenda. When turbo seals break it will suck all ur oil out very quickly & engine damage will accure if u don't catch it in time. I hope that's all it is. Good luck guys!

The shell casings were .45ACP and .22LR - Shell casings are everywhere and always have been, going back to the late 19th century, I've discovered them all over the country (I usually pick mine up) 😉 - Probably too late for this but it's better to rent/buy a tow bar if your friend is really going to tow you some distance. That strap idea is not a smart way to go for distance, I don't think it's even legal on the highway

@@NextMeridianExpedition It may work well for YOU, but others traveling on the highway were put in danger. That is why its the law ..."The state vehicle code says, “No person shall operate a vehicle towing another motor vehicle upon a freeway unless the towing vehicle is coupled to the towed vehicle by a rigid structure attached securely to both vehicles by nonrigid means." As well, should have your 4-ways on while towing to alert others. Not cool.

Same with the Grand Canyon. I first visited there in around 1974. When I went back earlier this year, it reminded me of a Disney theme park
@NextMeridianExpedition
@NextMeridianExpedition 2 жыл бұрын
That happened to many places. But somehow we did not have many people around. But it s true we tend to appreciate even better areas outside the parks where sceneries are similar but without the commercial frame around.
@markmitchell457
@markmitchell457 2 жыл бұрын
@@NextMeridianExpedition I can recommend Sequoia National Park, and Kings canyon National park. Just a short drive away from Yosemite which has become completely commercialized. Sequoia with its giant redwoods is the least utilized National Park in the system for its size. It's just an incredibly beautiful place. If you don't like a lot of people all you have to do is walk a half mile 99.5% of the people will not walk a half mile. I know neither of these parks are on your route this time around. If you come back to the United States you might consider a trip along the west coast of Washington Oregon and half of california. I only say half of California because the other half is a bit of a desert with very nice beach cities and towns. Great for partying, not so much for sightseeing. Below San Francisco avoid Interstate 5. It's not a scenic road down there. I personally live in San Diego, which is a beautiful seaside City surrounded by desert. Take a look at the city on the web.

The main thing with Towing. You have to keep the tow rope tight. You are using your brakes to slow him down as well. Mostly when going down hills and stopping. If his brake lights come on, your rope goes slack need to push brake a little harder. You want to try to not have brake on when pull you on flat road too. As he is changing gears when speeding up, the rope will slacken a little, till he puts foot on gas again. Don't touch the brake, will take slack up by it self. When going from stop, to go on a new road and have to take off quickly. Just hold the brake down a tinny bit just enough to stop rope getting a big sagg in it between gears. Once he is in 3rd gear let brake right off. This is All to stop the big jerks. If the rope is slack. let him know so he can go forward a bit to tighten it up before he has to start pulling you quickly to get across an intersection. Hopefully this all helps get you to buy a tow bar or get one made. Hopefully even better, your Landrover is an easy fix. Happy travelling.

Hey there, you may want to consider a tow bar. Most U Haul places have them to purchase and so much safer than tow strap. Around 150$ and I always carry it either on the front of the FJ60 or the TJ Jeep. My worst case was towing a Ford Truck home behind a rental UHaul. If you are riding in the towed vehicle, you can enhance the braking when needed.

That's terribly unfortunate. Right in such a nice part of the trip. I hope it's something simple like an injector seal or turbo seal... Perhaps a lighter grade oil and a catchcan might be wise. Also if you need to be towed again over any real distance you must remove a propshaft or risk making a right mess of your transfer box. Fingers crossed for you both. A solid bar is much safer for towing. the problem with a long rope is that people may not realise you are being towed and overtake where there is not space to overtake both vehicles.

Hi For a long long distance we would have preferred a solid bar. But we had no alternative in the middle of Yellowstone. Eventually with the Walkie talkie we could maintain good coordination and the rope was not very long at all we would have warning lights and pull on the side when another car was coming up. More on this adventure in next episode. It does require a lot of focus though...

Yeah, is it true that such difficult situations are part of the adventure, are inevitable, and never lends themselves to the question of "if it will happen"? The question is, “when will it happen?” Unfortunately, the “answer” always comes unprepared and when your world is more beautiful. I was very happy for you when I saw that although you were going through difficult and very unpleasant moments in all respects, you managed to find the beautiful side of the moment. I am so happy for you because you have each other, which is most important to you, and at the same time you have real friends. Nice to see a Kiwi rego plate in USA! Sorry to see this,,,,, what appears to have happened is your turbo oil seals have corrupted and leaked oil into the manifold area. You's are very very lucky it wasn't an aggressive leak which would have resulted in the engine running away and blowing up!!! lf that happened you would have been looking for an entire engine, not to mention the increased repair cost!!!
@MrMoth0102
@MrMoth0102 2 жыл бұрын
Another thing with diesels is to have a rag handy for stuffing into the air intake if the engine does happen to run away. The only way to turn a runaway diesel off is to block off any air entering the air intake with a rag!

If you see an engineering shop on the way, they could make a Towing bar and an easy hitch to go on the front of the Landrover. Be way safer than Towing with the strap. If have locking hubs on front turn to unlock. Be easier to steer. I would top up the oil. Start it and check where oil coming from. If not bad when idling, and has oil pressure, no big knocking notices. and not heap of smoke out exhaust. I would just let it idle when being towed. You will have your power steering, and power brakes to make it easier being towed. Cheak to make sure an animal has not made a nest in the engine air intake. If it has, the engine will will be gutless, blowing black, blue smokeout the exhaust from sucking oil out of the motor. Might be all that is wrong with it. Hope all works out for you.

Sorry for what happened. Anyway, as much as it seems an upsetting event having the rangers telling you to use the park trailer, they actually "helped" you to save money in reparing the drivetrain of your Defender. If flat bed/tow truck not available and you need to be towed by other vehicle, you should go under the Defender and disconnect front and rear prop shafts otherwise you would compromise part/s of your drivetrain.....repairs could be quite expensive. Good luck

(5:20-5:26) Isn't there a law that requires people who shoot in the wild to pick up, retrieve, or collect their shelling casings? Considering it takes years for metal to corrode or decompose it's an environmental hazard in the long term, especially in such a beautiful place. Also with the price of brass nowadays this is a very wasteful practice. Stay healthy and safe Nick and Mathilde. God bless!

You never said how much the park tow cost you. And did they give you a phone number for another tow company after dropping you off ? Here is an example cost for a large vehicle in America. A large tour bus (think rock star) is around $1300 but goes up for miles. Smaller vehicles like yours probably in the $150 to 250 range but being in a national park i have no clue...

Bummer!! We've been talking several times on line about the pleasures that lie ahead in the Canyonlands of Utah. I live in Driggs ID, 30 miles across Teton Pass from Jackson Wy. It may not feel like it but its good that the Park Rangers stopped you from flat towing your Defender out of the Park because of the wildlife, hills and traffic. Better to be sitting a parking lot trying to decide what to do next than being upside down in a canyon. Taking it to Jackson is probably a bad idea. Jackson Hole Wyoming is the richest county in the entire USA, and rents and services are priced equivalently. I don't know of a single shop that would work on something as unusual as a Defender. Not that they don't exist---- I just don't know of one that I would trust. When my VW fuel pump failed in the Jackson Hole Ski area parking lot the nearest foreign car shop wanted $550 dollars to tow it three miles to their shop and install a new one. My next door neighbor who has a big truck flat bed wrecker charged me $ 100 to drive across a 8700 ft pass, bring it back and roll it into my garage. The local parts house delivered a new fuel pump to my door for $120 and I installed it in less than an hour. Hate to be the bearer of bad news. but if the engine ran for very long without sufficient oil it is toast. I used to own an exotic car restoration shop. I'm too old and lame to be your mechanic, but would be glad to help you find your best solution. Best of luck! Richard

Thank you Richard. As you say it was probably for the best in Yellowstone. We eventually found a place in Jackson recommended by another Land Rover owner. But it was really random that someone knew anything of Defender over there as you describe. We were lucky to be recommended. Thank you for your comment and encouragement!
