As an electrician, I recommend not using those push-in connectors on the backs of receptacles, especially for 20 amp circuits with heavy appliance usage. Wrapping the wires on the screws is the best connection and less likely to fail over time.

@JOEZEP54
@JOEZEP54 Жыл бұрын
@@diinpai Do you have a a fuse box & a breaker box? I did see this set up many years ago or did you just mix the terms up? It may be a tripped breaker, blown fuse or a break in the circuit. The non working socket may be powered from another line. Stay safe, Joe Z
@tms2568
@tms2568 Жыл бұрын
@@diinpai If you are sure that everything else in the house is working, including all receptacles, then it is likely a loose connection or splice somewhere in the circuit. Just as an FYI, it very, very rarely a problem with wiring in the walls. It is usually a connection in another outlet somewhere on the circuit (receptacle, switch, ceiling light, or other junction location). Try the closest receptacle or switch nearby as a starting point and go from there. Turn the breaker off and unscrew the device from the outlet box and look for any loose connections or loose splices. Pull on each individual wire a bit because a loose connection is not always obvious by just looking. One thing to note is that if there is more than one cable coming into the box (meaning a feed in and a feed out continuing the circuit) at the non-working receptacle then it is likely that other things on the circuit would also not be working. If it is the end of the circuit, and there is only one cable coming into the box, then that is an indication that the problem is at the outlet location that is just before it in the circuit.

I have an older outlet thT only has a white n black and ground, it burnt when I was trying to adjust it while it had power, so I got a new outlet, but after replacing it the same way the other one was it has no power, what can be wrong?

Thank you sir! I got a 50 year old house. My garage door and my two bathrooms upstairs were without power. The breaker seemed to be ok, it did not jump. But I replaced it anyway just to get that out of the way. Still no power. I watched your video and to make the story short, I found a faulty outlet in my Down stairs bathroom ( which had the lights working and was not connected to that breaker). When I opened to outlet it was very rusty, probably from the sink’s humidity. Your video told me to check the outlets, the trick was to find out which outlet was feeding which. I replaced the bad outlet and bingo! I would have never thought that an outlet could control my entire garage and my two full bathrooms upstairs! Thanks again! You saved me a bunch of money from calling a professional.

Joe, The reason that the dining room receptacle went first is because it is the first device on the circuit and caries all of the load from all those 4 receptacles. So, it builds up the most heat. I would strongly suggest that you get another circuit run and receptacle for the microwave. It is suggested by the microwave manufacturers that you have a dedicated circuit for it. Best wishes, Kevin

I just had this same exact issue occur this week at my gf’s condo and was feeling pretty well stumped but once I watched your video I was convinced this was indeed her issue too, so I just skipped all the trouble shooting / tracing you did and jumped right to changing out all the outlets connected to the “problem” breaker starting at the one that seemed closest to where the issue began and turned the breaker on/off after swapping out each individual outlet until the “problem outlet” revealed itself by way of the lights coming back on to all the other outlets. Only had to swap out 2 outlets before the problem outlet revealed itself & the problem was solved, which made me look like a genius / hero to my gf :) You’re analysis was spot on and I should also note that the “problem” outlet that I found was actually a newer outlet that was installed maybe 3 years ago tops, while some other outlets in her condo (on that same breaker (and are the ones I suspected were the cause) are over 35 years old, as they’re the originals from when the place was built in the mid 80’s. I loved this video because it comes off as if your uncle or grandfather just randomly texted you a video of a problem he had at his home and is proudly showing you how he slowly and methodically resolved it, step by step. Nice video and step-by-step instruction. Never “back stab” an outlet nor switch with electrical wires as they cause these electrical problems years later. Always “pig tail the 2 wires originally going to the device and add the 3rd to the connection and the other end should go to the device. You will never have multiple device failure again! When the original electrician wired my house 16 years ago he “back stabbed” ever device and so far 3 devices have cracked open at the wire entering the device. While “back stabbing” is permitted, it is a poor way of wiring a device and only causing problems years later!

This literally just happened to me. I rewired one of my outlets... the bottom one was on a switch. Disconnected the switch, rewired it disconnect the switch and stay on. Things went well... turned on the breaker. Overhead lights work, tested too outlet... it worked. Tested bottom outlet, and accidently hit the gfci test button (on non gfci outlets) and now all the outlets in the whole chain are dead. I suspet I blew up an outlet further up the chain as the breaker still works, my overhead light works... but now all the outlets in the chain are dead..and they wired em up by stabbin them in and out instead of puttin a lead to em. So now I have to track down this chain until I find the first broken outlet to fix it. A gfci test button isnt suppose to killyour outlets, but it must have!

The main problem you had were outlets that were wired by back stabbing the outlets. They must have been put in by the previous owner, not an electrician. All outlets should be connected at the screw terminals. The only tool you needed to find the problem was a non contact voltage tester pen. This would have sensed the live voltage without having to go thru the hassle of removing the back stabbed wires. You would have sensed voltage at the bad outlet and all others upstream but none of the downstream outlets. The bad outlet would have been the last one in the string to have power sensed.

Thank you for watching and contributing useful information. Your suggestion sounds like it is a much easier way of finding the break. I will use it if I run into this issue again. I agree that all outlets & switches should be attached using the screw terminals. However, you assume that a person knows the direction of the run. In many cases, due to remodels and such, these runs can and often are changed dramatically. A NCVT does little good when a run has been changed to connect a different room entirely. I ran into this very problem yesterday and today on a renovated home where power was lost in half the kitchen, half the dining room and half of the living room. Power originated in the kitchen then off to a separate unconnected bdr, then back to the kitchen. Then to the dining room where another split occurred for lights and outlets.

Very thorough explanation in diagnosing the cause of the problem. Whenever there’s 2 sets of wires (4 wires total - excluding the the grounds) coming in to a box, it’s preferable to pigtail them together, thus preventing other receptacles downstream from tripping or malfunctioning. Another suggestion is to install a GFCI in the your dinning room that will also protect your downstream outlets in your kitchen. Pigtails: I do acknowledge this is not always possible in older homes where smaller metal electrical boxes was the norm back in the day, because there isn’t enough space in these older boxes to accommodate wire nuts or wago’s. Again , very good video and thank you for sharing.

Great tips on isolating the problem outlet. The challenge is that I am not able to determine which breaker the 4 outlets that are not working are on. To be safe, I will kill the master breaker to be sure that there is no power to the outlets that I suspect are faulty.

FYI-recommend you pig tale the 2 whites with a 3rd white wire. Repeat for the black wires and ground. This will result in only 3 wires coming out from the box. If done this way, you will be able to find the faulty receptacle easily, plus the other receptacles will continue to work. Connect these wires to the receptacle to the hot, common and ground screws. Not the easy push in on the back of the receptacle.

yes those push-in wire outlets are junk,,they cause problems,,,i worked in a large plastic plant running a 600,000$ machine,,and every time we had a electric problem it was one of those damn push in switches,, the Maintenace guys would remove it and replace with a switch where you tightened a screw in on the side like a old style outlet,, and problem solved ,that machine had plenty of switches like that ,it was once a month to replace them..

I recently change my kitchen outlet plugs and when I reset my breaker my living room, hall way and garage lights were not working anymore also the outlets in the living room. It’s weird because the outlets I change in the kitchen are working properly. Any one had and issue similar to mine?
@JOEZEP54
@JOEZEP54 Жыл бұрын
Hi Jesse, I would check the outlet again, You may have not connected a wire. Another area to check is the tab on the side of the outlets that would allow the outlet to run off two lines. If you broke the connection & the non working lights are connect to that part this could be the cause. This is a comment from Melvin McGregor that makes a lot of sense when rewiring. Stay safe, Joe Z

@JOEZEP54
@JOEZEP54 10 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching. Please keep in mind I am not an electrician. I would check where the power/current is being supplied from. Look for the outlet that has only 2 wires that should be the end of the run. Then check to see if the other 2 have power being supplied to them. If not your problem is in another area. In my case it was from an outlet in another room that went bad. Keep safety in mind when doing any electrical work a small mistake can have deadly consequences. If you are not familiar with working with electrical issues calling an electrician would be the safest option. Let me know if this was of help. Stay safe, Joe Z

Those stab in the back connections are terrible. The surface area of the blade that contacts the wire is about 1/100 of what you get when you use the tap screws. Every time I have an issue in the wall, it's that, it gets changed and we are fine. I should just do them all, but if it's working.......

I believe this is exactly what is going on in my house, the outlets in the master bedroom (above the living room) and the living room are all not working, but they work in the dining room next to the living room which is on the same breaker. The breakers are all in the on position and have been switched on and off multiple times in testing. The box has no lose breakers and the outlets are quite old, around 50 years old in some parts of the house so they really needed replacing. I will be replacing 9 outlets in total so that each of the affected and the one previous in line to the affected will all be brand new and hopefully restores the power in that area. Though for me it's hit the lighting on the same circuit, the lights won't turn on either... so who knows for sure until I replace the sockets if that was the case or if the wiring itself will need replacement. This isn't my house, but the company that manages it doesn't do repairs... I've had to do them all myself after YEARS of waiting which is appalling, but when I do it myself it is done fast and I take all the precautions to do it right. Thank you for your video, and I appreciate you prefacing that you aren't an electrician and also reconfirming it again at the end, you did a lot of good work yourself for not being further educated specifically in that trade.

Two things: 1. 1960's code and practices would run an outlet/receptacle circuit from one room into another so that in case of a short/open-circuit, you had at least one hot outlet in the room. 2. It's dark in the corners of your house - get a flash-light so we can SEE what you are talking about. Otherwise, thanks for this video. Good job!

So i figured the breaker was bad and bought a new 1..., but it would not work either, so i tried it on the next fin over & Vola it Worked... -3 wk's later i had 2 things on again and Poof, out both plugs go again... Go bk in and look at breaker & it's sTill on.? Moved it over to another fin and nothing... Ive also changed that recepticle also...... Gonna run to Home Depot and purchase some outlets in preparation to do the same. I’m crossing my fingers that I have the same issue as the outlets seem ok from the outside. @@JOEZEP54 Thanks. I found some old sketches of the wiring done in the 80s but I know stuff has changed since then. Showed it to a certified electrician friend and he thinks he might know which outlet is the problem. Unfortunately, it's in a closet with bifold doors and they are stuck closed. We have to see if we can get them to open or break them down to gain access. I plan to replace every single outlet and switch in the house eventually (its all very old stuff from the 70s & 80s & we've had a lot of power surges). Mouse damage is a very high probability.

I have a question I'll try to be brief and clear. In my home, outlet A, B, and C are on the same thing, along with the kitchen light. Outlet A recently stopped working and when it did, it stopped b, c, and the kitchen light, however did not trip the breaker. Instead, if I plug in a lamp into outlet a, the power returns to b, c, and the kitchen light, though A remains dead. What would cause this? Today, outlet b did the same thing, I plugged in a vacuum and it killed outlet c and the kitchen light....and only after plugging the lamp into outlet a did things return to c and the kitchen, no breaker tripped. And to be clear the only thing even plugged in at the time was the tv and modem.
