I think people never understand when I say that it's one of my favourite movies. They think it's an oldies Hollywood, easy and shallow movie. A country girl who gets lost in the city, looking for herself, or a bird with a broken wing who flys away to never go back. This scene always bring tears to my eyes, so deep and meaningful. Did we get lost if we grow apart from our family ? Our past ? Could we go back ? Anyway, in the book Holly disappeared at the end, to finally find herself . Like the little bird ♡

Couldn't agree more. I think this movie is mislabelled as a light, glamourous romantic comedy. I don't see it that way at all. For me, it's a rather deep reflection on complex life issues, like trying to escape reality and being terrified of happiness/vulnerability. Granted, there are comic moments, but beyond the glamour and fun situations there is the story of a deeply scared woman whose life is based on a big, sophisticated pretence.

To show how great this movie is, it coulda ended with the Doc riding off on that bus. What an actor Buddy Ebson was. That stare. I love Truman Capote's book. Truly. But this movie it captures your heart and never lets go. There are no words to describe what Audrey Hepburn does with Holly Gollightly. She lights up the screen with her charisma. "Breakfast" lost to "West Side Story" for the Oscar and it was great, no doubt, but I think "Tiffaney's" is more iconic. And hey, it's no shame losing to a picture written by William Shakespeare.

Audrey Hepburn's acting is incredible in the scene where she turns Doc down. I could tell part of her really wanted to go back with him but she just couldn't bring herself to because it would revive memories too painful for her, especially her mistake of leaving him in the first place.

I don't think she felt it was a mistake at all. They married whr. She was 14, definitely not a time for someone to get married or make serious decisions like that. I believe she really loved him, but leaving him was her acceptance of the fact that this was a pedophilic, messed up relationship. Part of the scene is her ex telling her that if she doesn't come with him, he'll basically tell her brother that she wants nothing to do with him. Even if he was kind to her, it's clear he was emotionally abusive. You'd have to be to marry a 14 year old girl. She realizes how fucked up the relationship was and I think coming to New York and becoming Holly was a way of leaving all that pain and shit behind her. She was manipulated into a marriage as a kid by a pedophilic older man who was already the father of four kids. Some of them were probably close to her age, and she was not just expected to marry this dude, but help raise his kids. Leaving him was the best thing she did for herself, and no doubt, she stayed as long as she did because of her brother, Fred. It shows with her relationships with all those rich suitors. To her, marriage has never been anything but a means of survival for her and her brother. Even with him as an adult and away in the military, Holly still can't get away from that mind set she grew up with. The closest she's gotten was leaving what's his face.

@aidanbenson1356
@aidanbenson1356 5 жыл бұрын
@@m.e.d.7997 I don't see how I'm reaching if a man who is clearly much older than her (plus she was 14) actively married a young girl after finding her, homeless and a runaway. It's common knowledge that a person who makes choices like that is in some form, abusive and untrustworthy. Plus, marrying a 14 year old is a definite qualifier for a pedophile. And it's clear that he's at least emotionally abusive because when Holly says that she won't leave with him, he threatens to tell her brother not to come home and that she doesn't care about him. That's obvious emotional manipulation, which IS abuse. Once you put those things together, the rest is pretty fucking obvious. The man took advantage of a homeless 14 year old and her brother, and the rest is fairly self explanatory. Stories like this play out rather similarly. And if we decide to look at it further, it's suggested in the film (and directly stated in the book). That Holly gives sexual favors to men for money. Her actions are suggestive of someone who has a history of sexual abuse and because she was mostly uneducated, she had no other options after running away. Not counting being accidentally strung into a mob boss's schemes by "reporting the weather." She never suspected anything, even when "the weather" didn't regularly match the actual weather outside. This man easily tricked and wooed her, convincing her that he was an appropriate father figure, the one thing she truly wanted. All of her actions, the drinking, interactions with other men, all suggest a young woman who grew up abused and was having difficulty breaking out of a cycle of abuse.

Doc and Holly Golightly's relationship was purely Platonic. (of love or friendship) intimate and affectionate but not sexual. "their relationship was purely platonic" Holiday-Holly- Golightly, formerly known as Lulamae Barnes before she married Doc Golightly Smith. Doc took Holly-then Lulamae-and her brother, Fred, in as runaway orphans. Thirty-five years her senior, he married Lulamae when she was 13 "going on 14." After she ran away, leaving Fred behind, Doc searched for over four years before finding her in New York. He wants her to return to him, but she says she's had the marriage annulled and won't have anything to do with him. Truman Capote

Pedophilia was never seen as ‘normal’ in the 40’s, 50’s or 60’s. Just because your grandparents did it, doesn’t mean it’s normal. It makes sense that Holly no longer loves Doc. And it makes sense that Holly now has stronger feelings for Fred than for Doc. But what doesn't make sense is for Holly to tell Doc that he shouldn't love wild things because Doc can love anyone he wants and it's a contradiction that Doc ought not to love wild things but it's okay for Fred to love wild things. If wild things ought not to be loved, then logically it follows that Doc and Fred both ought not love wild things. But she was obviously in a stressful situation as Doc was leaving and it's hard to find the perfect thing to say at those times. But the perfect thing to say would just be "I don't love you any more" instead of insisting Doc live by a double standard.

Oh goodness, please don't refer to Paul as Fred in the comments, because in this scene Holly and Doc are also referring to the real Fred. Holly said it wasn't okay for Paul to love her either. Until Paul confronted her and told her that she was just being scared. Anyway, Holly was with Doc because at the time when she married him as a teenager, she had no money and she also had a brother to take care of - Fred. Hence, she needed to heavily rely on Doc. That's why Doc used that as a threat. He told Holly that he'll ask Fred to do more time in the military because if Holly doesn't come home with him, then he won't look after Fred anymore.

Yes, I think Holly is saying both that she can only be a wild thing which isn't true and that no one should love her if she is being herself which isn't true. She's also saying that Doc has the tendency to "love" animals/people because he wants to help them. This is related to her telling Paul later that she associates him loving her with him trying to put her in a cage. That's the way she experienced "love" from a very young age.

It's Paul I don't get here. "What can I do? He's your husband!" Yeah, and why didn't he say that to the woman he's sleeping with? "Suppose Bill's having us watched?" "What can I do? He's your husband!" Paul seems to have some real moral superiority with Holly despite having heard directly from Doc that he married a 14 year old girl very soon after his wife died and considers her to be the "mother" of his four children. Then the girl ran away and Doc has found her to try to pressure her to return to be a wife and mother when she's about 20. No matter whether she's technically married or not, Paul cares a lot about Holly and should help her stay out of this situation if she doesn't want to be in it. She obviously made a bad decision because she was so young and had no one helping her. She even felt and still feels that she needs to look after her brother. Like I said, Paul clearly doesn't respect marriage much since he's sleeping with and being supported by a married woman so why can't he give Holly some honest help here?! I know he does but he needs to give it more sincerely for a woman he loves. That's why she tells him at the end that being loved and put in a cage are the same thing. That's all she's ever experienced. Paul should not care whether she's married to this pedophile or not, after hearing the story and knowing that she ran away from him, he does NOT need to "be doc's friend" and lead him right to her. Even Doc says that he doesn't want to scare her and Paul doesn't even help with that, he just makes her think that Fred is there but it's Doc and he walks away and leaves her alone with Doc before seeing whether or not she wants that.

Okay, but I don’t understand why people don’t take more of an issue with Doc marrying Holly when she was 14! Barely older than his kids (and please don’t say it was “the times.” The average age of marriage during the war for a woman was 22.)!

Not necessarily the times, but the rural culture they were a part of. Not necessarily "normal", but more accepted.

@@loge10 that makes sense. Still seems like it should have been strange in NYC where they’re living?

Yes it's sad the person she was doesn't exist anymore and he doesn't know her now and she looks similar so he thinks it's still her never knew he would never see Lula Mae again didn't get to grieve for the loss of her either no closure. She can't pretend to be someone she's not either just to satisfy his expectations so it's disappointing for both of them.

Can we talk about Doc for moment and how well he took his wife abandoning him and her kids? At the very least WHY did she string him along until the bus stop?! That's just cold blooded.

a complex wonderful film...........but it is frustrating that she never could be satisfied with what she had.......hypergamy would keep her from her equal in looks and financial situation. She almost lost out on true love because of her desires for a wealthy man. I am not a woman so I can't fully understand what that is like but I feel like unless she changed her attitude she would end up divorcing years after the movie ending similar to her divorcing her first husband.

She was like a kid (around 14-15) when she married him then had it annulled. And no, the kids weren't hers. So legally, she has no reason to go back to him. Doc just thought he could make her.

Her appearance shouldn’t overshadow her talent to act. Ppl only care about appearances. Take Audrey’s amazing acting ability and set it side by side with the actresses we have nowadays...I think you’d surely change your mind.
