Sibu is so much bigger than when I was there 58 years ago! We actually had laksa for dinner last night here in California, 8,000 miles away from Malaysia. Asian markets import the laksa ingredients from Singapore and we add the seafood, noodles and fresh vegetables. It was just like being in Malaysia without the humidity. Here's an alert concerning your Canadian friend. Canadians seem to have a compulsion to help people! They just can't help it. I was parked in Vancouver looking at a map, back in the day when people used maps, because I was lost when a Canadian parked on the opposite side of the street and walked over and asked if he could help! So be careful.

7:43 pulut panggang, which mean grilled sticky rice. 8:07 ah... this is the plain one. i prefer the one with sambal dried prawn. yum yum... 10:44 looks like deep fried yam ball with sweet meat (char siu) fillings. 14:12 uncle only speaks basic english, just enough for his small business, i.e. numbers. 20:03 michael, your brain is correct. 😁 21:37 that is Durian Belanda, a.k.a. soursop. 😁 24:59 nooooooooooo~~~~ dont pour the soup in... no gg.... no.... Just kidding. You just go ahead with whichever way that suits your tastebuds best. 😁 (my way : mix the noodle well with the liquid in the bowl, all the flavours are in that liquid. eat it with a bit of chili+its vinegar or the chili sauce. add a bit of soup only if i feel that the noodle is too dry.)

Gigi and Mike, just adding in further info to my earlier entry regarding the Sarawak laksa. Coconut milk is also an essential ingredient for the laksa gravy to give it the unique flavour. There are variants in the way the gravy is prepared - depending on the exact amount of the various ingredients put in for the gravy, making the flavour slightly different among those who sell the laksa. In some cases the gravy tastes close to curry and such a serving is more rightly known as curry laksa. The shrimp stock used is processed product, something like the Maggi chicken stock cubes, in local terminology it's "belancan (pronounced 'belachan' ". Laksa is also garnished with fresh coriander leaves. All the best - fun and food- for your adventures.

like all food, laksa sarawak also depends on the restaurant and the cook, like the general taste is the same but in some shop the herbs/curry flavour might be very strong, some might be less. some might be creamy, some more watery. even the type of sambal differs. i like to order laksa swak when trying new restaurant, because sometimes you will get the taste that suits you the best and that restaurant gonna be your fav whenever you visit the place. case in point, Awang Mahyan in Miri.

Laksa is a popular local dish comprising mainly of rice vermicelli (beehoon/beehun), flavoured with gravy cooked of shrimp stock, chilli, shallots, and lemon grass, garnished with shredded chicken meat, fresh shrimps and egg omelet. Added optional flavour served in a tiny saucer is spicy shrimp stock with ground fresh chilli and a slice of fresh lime - to be added before eating the laksa. This dip helps to give the laksa it's pungent and slightly sour flavour.

‘Madu’ or honey is usually used by seller to indicate that the fruit is sweeter than the ordinary. But mostly it is just a marketing trick to entice buyers.
