That is very sad. Profound & poignant, a scene straight from "The Shawshank Redemption". (One of the greatest films made, to-date. The book is not for the weak. Shout to King.) Many do commit or attempt Intentional Recidivism. Really, what society seems to miss is how that's actually part of the system itself. That said, it sounds like he _wanted_ freedom and thought he could indeed make it, given his Compassionate Release _request._ Apparently he lost hope.

I'm 40 years old and the first and last time I ever stole something was at 5 years old. Before leaving the store, my mom told me that I'm not getting that Reese's cup. As we're walking in the parking lot, I carelessly unwrapped that freshly taken Reese's and ate that bih. Candy was still in my mouth as my mom tore my a** up right there in front of the store and she made me take the wrapper back to tell the clerk that I stole it. It was grand opening, grand closing on my life of crime. I'll never forget that.

This is why it’s good to learn some type of skill in prison. The real world is different and evolving every single day. There will always be a need for an electrician, plumber etc and these are skills you can build on to start your own business. Prison unfortunately is not for rehabilitation. Like someone mentioned above probably no family, no support and you go back to what you know roof over your head and meals.
