Secret Negotiations & Ultimatums: The ACC is facing a pressure cooker situation which will potentially trigger an ACC media deal collapse!

Those schools will eventually get the opportunity to stay in the BIG12 for a permanent discount. If their audience size goes up, then that discount will be adjusted. Question is, do they want that, or would they prefer to be the kings of the lower tier.

@@CFBAddictionGeorgia Tech might end up landing in the Big12 but not the other 3 most likely. Wake Forest has been consistently good for a long time in all sports and might get added to Big12 but doubtful. Could see the ACC regroup after 3-7 teams leave for two other conferences with 4 to the SEC and 3 to the BiG10, and the ACC restructure their media deal and includes two new players in CW and CBS to go with ESPN. They backfill with 14 schools (and serious about that) and get 25-27 million base revenue plus the NCAA tournament monies for different sports which puts them on par with the Big12. Now who would those schools be to make the new ACC the first 24 teams in football conference and 25 teams in all other sports, as Notre Dame is in for all of those and keep them with agreements to the ACC? They would be the following schools and will have this 12 teams ACC East Side and 12 teams ACC West Side. ACC East Side: 1. Boston College 2. Syracuse 3. Pitt 4. Army for all sports 5. Navy for all sports 6. JMU 7. App State 8. Duke 9. Wake Forest 10. CCU 11. Georgia Tech 12. USF ACC West Side: 1. Louisville 2. Memphis 3. Tulane 4. SMU 5. UTSA 6. Rice 7. Air Force for all sports 8. San Diego State 9. Stanford 10. California 11. Oregon State 12. Washington State Now is this configuration of the ACC still worthy of Autonomy Status and Power Status and deserves top revenue distributions identical to the Big12? Yes it does. Does it keep them at the table? Yes it does. Does it make them to continue to get more CFP than the Big12 by a slight margin? Believe it or not it does. Does this alignment actually help improve viewings and ratings immensely? Again, it actually does. Will they be like the Big12 and in football maybe at best in some years of a 12/14/16 team playoff get 2-3 teams in but usually only one? Unfortunately this is also a yes. Does this keep the ACC as the best basketball conference for both men’s and women’s basketball? It does but the New Big East and the Big12 are gaining significantly, so crucial to add the teams I have added; because good in men’s and women’s hoops and on the men’s and women’s diamond as well as football. Will the ACC being revamped need to hire and unretire Mike Aresco to run this damn thing correctly and competently and successfully and will have to pay him an Aircraft Carrier of money so he can be as bullish and successful as he wants and was in the AAC where he successfully chose his replacement? Hell yes, make it happen.

@@CFBAddiction some food for thought I did see someone mention UNC has 28 varsity sports they compete in and all of which are in the B1G. The SEC doesn’t have some of the athletics so they would have to either compete at a club level or become affiliate member for select sports in other conferences. That may push them to prefer a B1G landing spot.

@kaioh187

The product will not decline I think. The days of traditional college football are long gone and never ever coming back. Television will make the schools that are in a conference just to get a check think about being relegated to a Group of Five Conference. What about the schools that are in the Group of Five that win and want to move up? Those schools should be given the chance to make it to the Power Conferences. If people do not like the way college football is going just watch FCS Division II college football or just find another sport to watch this fall.

@tomdemay6147 exactly what I find hilarious in that ND is even more greedy and a way worse parthner than FSU or CU have ever been. Plus FSU and CU have actually won championships and Heismans after 1993. The lesser ACC schools are really screwed but they get what they deserve by voting with ND to water down the ACC. I hope they enjoy expensive cross-country trips to California if the ACC even survives

A key benefit of the Composition Clause is that the ACC gets to keep the benefits of the ESPN contract if not more than 2 teams leave. So if just FSU leaves, then there are no damages to the ACC and even the lower $130 million exit fee is an unenforceable penalty. If the ACC expects FSU and Clemsoin to pay $130 million each FSU would be better off going scorched earth and leaving before June 30. None of the games will be televised which is fine, we forego $30-40 million ditribution from the ACC but so does everyone else including the league office who takes a 1/16th share. Share the pain. The only problem with your analysis TJ is what does it mean to "leave the conference before June 30? FSU already asked the court to rule that they gave the 1 year notice, in other words treat their lawsuit as retroactive to the August 2023 notice deadline. Do we need to give further notice? Is that notice effective immediately or does it take a whole year? Presumably it takes an entire year because we are not out yet. But I don't know.

Music to my ears. Wish the ACC had folded yesterday. Bad Karma is finally catching up to the ACC. What responsible desirable team would join that sinking ship today? The ACC practically kicked USC, a founding member, out in early 70s. Now the gamecocks have come home to roost and USC can laugh at the ACC as well as lapping its members in CFB payouts. What conference would publicly go to court to settle a dispute rather than settle behind closed doors? Well, we all know the answer to that and dirty tricks and dirty laundry is gonna be media fodder UNLESS the ACC comes to its senses and faces the inevitable end as far as FSU, Clemson and UNC are concerned. The ACC will be a sixth rated conference when FSU and Clemson leave anyway and will be reduced to an even lower level when UNC leaves. ND has some serious thinking to do about joining the B10 which it should have done years ago instead of making the ACC its B______.

The best ACC was the original ACC which was a southern conference. The conference has slowly watered itself down with expansion after expansion. They should go back to being a southern powerhouse and get rid of all these other schools that cost them tons of travel expenses and refocus on its core schools and add other "east coast schools" that would bring value to their current lineup. Go get WVU who would be a natural fit rival for ACC member Pitt. Bring in Charlotte who will ultimately be a school similar to Louisville.

Here is one other important point: if ESPN has enough of a Conference, they can and will cut off a Conference and take schools they want and move them to a different Conference: See the PAC with ASU, Colorado, U of A and Utah to the Big XII. To make matters worse, they are willing to let valuable schools go to the completion ( that is what happened with UO and UW going to Fox and the Big 10): So if FSU prefers the Big 10 to the SEC: No problem. There are available slots in the SEC and Big XII for ESPN to place schools ESPN wants ( not just Clemson).

The money will be the same, there isn't enough "money" teams meaning hot brands and top 10 teams and blue blood programs. Big 12 don't have any "money" teams. The 4 ACC schools will end up in Big 12 anyways. Why would Florida State, Clemson and UNC want to join the Big 12 when SEC and Big 10 calling and offering 2x the amount of money payout.

The worst thing for FSU and Clemson is for those 7-8 "left behind" schools to form a class and go into federal court against maybe even the ACC as well as FSU and Clemson. Those 7-8 schools can make a case of breach of contract with compensatory payments equaling their expected annual payments under the GOR.

I don’t think the homer Florida court is going to override the NC court. These cases will probably combined in Federal court and mediation will be strongly recommended. If FSU & Clemson are the only schools that leave, the ACC will backfill with USF, Tulane and SDSU to get to 18. If UNC & NCSt sue to leave (have P2 landing spots) then a collapse is certainly possible. ACC’s best bet is to settle for big exit fees of $150MM or higher. IMO only FSU & UNC will get full media shares from P2 conferences. Everyone else will be like Oregon & UW that had to take partial shares. ESPN would renew the media deal if UNC stays.
