To me, it seems like the exact opposite is happening. Gus now owns him for however many years Walt lives, not for only 3 months like before. He lost control, he now answers to Gus. He was speeding and also giving up the control over the vehicle, a literal visual representation of him losing control, or, giving it to someone/something else. I didn't get the feeling that Walt was feeling powerful there. Just my interpretation though, maybe it's wrong.

It explained everything perfectly, still put the onus on Walt where it should be but she gave him cover by demonstrating empathy about his intentions and state of mind. And gambling is far less of the social sin than meth is. And it makes him seem less dangerous so it protects the children, too. Walt should have thought of that story to lie to Skyler with. She saves his ass over and over. And she didn't want any of this to begin with. She is just surviving the best way she can. What's the alternative?
