These auditions were nearly 2 years even before the show first aired, as the Breaking Bad casting period was the spring/summer of 2006 after Malcolm In The Middle production ended.

I can ironically remember playing GTA San Andreas on Xbox all summer and in the fictional desert of that game, not even knowing this production was brewing toward our very own desert, long before shooting took place only a few hours away from me in Albuquerque. My first U.S. city to call home, also ironically in the very same era as Walter and Skyler in that house hunting flashback and when Jimmy moved down from Chicago to work at HHM. Have lasting memories and many ties to the ABQ from long ago, plus so many interesting coincidences. I probably visited ABQ at the same time Vince started scouting locations, about to put that city on the map.

When you look at Aaron Paul's tape, it kinda makes sense why the original idea was to kill off Jesse early on. This depiction wouldn't have stayed. He was good enough for the basic role. Merely Walts' minor connection to a junkie to get killed off, due to his actions. The final result is world's better, that Aaron improved on. Had no choice but to keep him. Now the show wasn't just Walt, but a duo.
