That depends on how you look at winning. If his initial goal was to feed his ego, to show his potential, then he certainly won. If his initial goal was to provide money post-death for his family, then he certainly won. If his goal was for his family to be better off after he was gone, he failed colossally. One of his family members is dead. His wife is a shell of her former self, and Walt Jr. is likely traumatized.

I'm not convinced Walt died that night. We'll see in a week or so when el Camino comes out. While it makes sense, Hank is dead, Walt was just fading out from the gun shot. Sure, the cancer was eating him up. But, in cinema, nothing is final until it's shown to be final.

The end of their marriage/love was when Skyler asked him DID YOU BRING YOUR PHONE, WALT? And he responded by saying WHICH ONE
@duyvuitton60194 жыл бұрын
@Dennis Reynolds My big takeaway from Skylar's character is that she wants to wear the pants in the marriage. As Walter has stated, ever since he got married he doesn't get to make his own choices and wanted at the time to not do chemo treatment. Even after she found out about Walt's true job and got involved, she tries to control the situation time and time again whether it's picking out the "front business" to purchase, or just giving $600,000 to a guy she was having an affair with w/out even telling Walt. I personally despise Skylar's OCD tendencies, which doomed the marriage before it ever even started (Men gotta be in the driver's seat of the marriage, otherwise the wife WILL lose all respect for you).

Or do you mean him manning up by making the money needed to pay for hospital treatments + family future funds, just to have Skylar give $600k of that money away to a guy she "doesn't know why she had an affair with"? Walt should have came clean sooner, but that should not detract from the real crime here which is the ridiculous high cost of cancer health care which banksrupts the average joe. EVEN BIGGER CRIME: All cancers are intentionally allowed to thrive by Big Pharma and their MMR Vaccine. The additive "nagalase" in the vaccine disables the human body's ability to kill cancer cells. The human body by default kills cancer cells, but the 'nagalase' additive disables this ability. If he wanted to help his family and not burden them with debt for his treatments, he would have taken the job at Grey Matter in season 1. He didn't because he couldn't bear the thought of only being given the job because he was pitied by the owners of a huge corporation that he feels he should own instead, since it was his research that build it. Instead, he dragged his family into a world of crime and violence and constantly put them in danger of being targeted by the cartels, all because of his pride

It was never about his family… it was about his regrets. Him selling his company for 5000 that’s worth billions haunted him. Faced with death and regrets this was his chance to prove his intelligence since selling out for 5k would make anyone feel incredibly stupid. He created his empire. If it was about his family and not him he wouldn’t kill his brother in law… or go that far. He had more than enough to set them up for life but his inability to sell out again was the death of his family.

@@derekmarks1479 All of the above comments make valid points. It speaks to the complexity of Walt's character and the way he faced his impending death. The things that I didn't realize until now, I finally realize that Walt is a villain. This justified all the bad things he does, but here is the silver linings many like you have missed. We saw how Walt evolved, adapted and get better as he gain experience from the drug trade, he also has to outsmarted his competitors and even fight for his survival. Those special traits ultimately allowed him to explore the underworld of the drug trade. He was our eyes and he able to eliminated very dangerous drug lords, even the very elusive one. Even Hank from the DEA has a hard time tracking them down. You probably be asking, "What's all this have to do with why I hate Skylar and Walt Jr?" That's actually a very good question, because in one of the interview, the actor who play Walt even admitted that Skylar played her roll well and that shes a biatch. Anyway, let's back to the beginning where Walt went to the hospital for cancer treatment. As you already know, they got hit by a crushing bill that they never able to repay. Walt was given a golden opportunity of a lifetime and he choose a profession that sell drug to support his family because he happened to be a chemistry teacher. When doctors choose that profession, do you think they did it out of goodwill or they did for money to support their family? The enormous bill where hospital charge for the cancer treatment is like a dangerous drugs, they also destroy life. Have you ever thought about that? If you're Walt, what would you do differently to help your family with the cancer treatment debt? And how do you manage to keep Skylar and Walt Jr to be supportive of you as your medical bills keep stacking up?

So, when Elliot, after learning about his cancer, offered him a job or just to pay for all his medical bills, Walt flew off the handle and chose to make poison rather than accept the "charity".

@@johnathonhaney8291 Wow, This quote is almost perfect, except logically even if you are going to have losses that outweighs the victory, it is still better to have the victory rather than suffer the losses with a defeat. I know the quote is meant to bring attention to the cost of winning a war. But it feels unsatisfactory on surface reading. I'm wondering whether it can tweaked a bit to have the emotive meaning but keep the logic intact on the surface.

Flynn is the son of Ted Beneke. Think about it he shares no resemblance to Walt. Not to mention Skyler had some sort of affair in the past seeing how she comes across a picture and clutches it close to her chest in season 1 episode 5 or 6 right before Hank comes to talk to her about the avoidance Skyler is having with Marie over the stolen tierra. Then how she sings her imitation of Marilyn Monroe's happy birthday. Then while she's having an affair with Ted he asks how the kids are doing and when she mentions Walt Jr, Ted says well he's got good genes.

@AlexQ265 жыл бұрын
@@djkameronblaze the couple didn't rip him off. This is a huge misunderstanding by a lot of fans maybe that's why they blindly root for Walter's triumph. Gretchen and Walter were once a couple, and there was one time he went on a vacation with her and her family. He got so intimidated by their status and lifestyle that he left abruptly and eventually sold his share on the Gray Matter for 5 grand. Walter always had been struggling with inferiority complex, and had been ripping himself off ever since. If you notice, every negotiation he did while building his empire, he was not settling for less ie., tuco and walter's first encounter and him setting a specific price, not abiding by Gus' commands and eventually taking him out. It's also why he married Skyler, who was a waitress back then and way lower than his intelligence level. The title itself says it, breaking bad. It never meant a good person broke and became bad, but the bad in him finally broke and got loose.

@nawreen76365 жыл бұрын
I agree with you to some extent Walt knows Jesse well enough to guess he would never work with people like jack and Todd willingly. Jesse was desperate to get out of this business since the moment Todd shot the kid Throughout the entire series walt understood Jesses thought process and abused it for his own benefit perfectly, used Jesse as his punching bag when things go wrong. Him suddenly believing Jesse willingly partnering and working with people like Jack, Todd goes against every episode of the show he knew that Jesse is the one who is cooking but he also knew Jesse won't work with those people and had been wanting to get out of the business for a long time I think Walter didn't understand why Jesse is cooking now when he heard first blue stuff is back again. he didn't went there to save him he didn't went there to kill him he went to kill jack and his gang for what they did and he wanted to understand why Jesse is cooking now which is why he told that whole fake speech about partnering to draw Jesse out to understand why he is cooking we saw some hints throughout the series that not knowing what Jesse is thinking or doing has bothered walt and created problems in walters plans. he draw Jesse out and waited till he was there to understand the situation better before he takes his final action I think Walter had no previously decided plan for Jesse. Walter handed over Jesse to jack and gang and from his partner speech people assume he went to kill Jesse but I think he would have never handed over Jesse to jack and gang if jack hadn't killed hank Jesse was the one who brought hank there and Walter blamed Jesse for hanks death he handed over Jesse not because he crossed walt but because in Walt's pov Jesse was partially responsible for hanks death Jesse had said walt had zero tolerance policy for threat to which hank replied except when it comes to u he cares about you Jesse doesn't believe that but it is the truth The reason Walter and Jesses relation are still one of the most debatable thing is because Walter loved Jesse as much as he loved his own son but Walter himself had never been aware of that he truly believed he does not care about Jesse there was a scene where Walter in a half conscious state and without realizing calls his own son Jesse which in a way supports my theory He cared about Jesse but he never realized it which is why his actions are unpredictable when it comes to Jesse Walter always has plans both for his family and his enemies but Walter never knew where Jesse stood enemy or family which is why when it comes to jesse Walter surprises everyone sometimes even himself

What? He obviously cared about his family + Jesse included. Why'd he go so much out of his way to make sure they got whatever money he could have left behind if he didn't? Why didn't he just keep on cooking meth after Hank died if he didn't care about his family? When his cancer came back, he chose to quit cooking meth so that he could spend the remaining time he had with his family fully intact. If empire building was hia true priority, why didnt he just keep doing that instead? He just wanted to have his cake and eat it, too- which he couldn't.
@haileyadkins84123 жыл бұрын
@@kylealejandro2022 i don’t think he ever did anything for his family, that was just his excuse so he didn’t feel like a bad person. He even admitted at the end that he did it all for himself. He started cooking meth because Hank told him he’d take care of his family when he was gone, and his ego was too big to let his brother help him. It was never about his family, it was about asserting his dominance.
@kylealejandro20223 жыл бұрын
@@haileyadkins8412 it was definitely about his family- just not ONLY about it. He can be a selfish man and putting himself first while also putting his family a close second. If it was all about him, then why does he go through such great lengths to make sure that Hank doesn't die? He literally is willing to give up all of his money to bargain for Hank's life. If it was only about him then why does he even start treating Jesse like extended family? He could have easily dropped Jesse multiple times but he goes through insane lengths to make sure that Jesse stays under his care. If it wasn't about family, then why was it that his breaking point was when his son wished he was dead over the phone? Being a meth king was when he felt most alive, but he realizes that none of it matters if he can't have that and have his family as well. That's what his problem was: he wanted his way to be the best way to take care of his himself. Yes, he wanted things done his way. But it's also true that he wanted to take care of his family almost just as much

I think the moment it became clear that Walter was doing it for himself and not his family was when he turned down the job offered to him by Elliot. He clearly would've made enough money for his family working at Grey Matter and who's to say how long he could've lived with the health insurance there. That moment displayed his most fundamental personality attributes. His arrogance, pride and his spite.
@digum19046 жыл бұрын
@@sideskroll They never Screwed him over. Walt left Gretchen because he felt inferior when spending time with her wealthy family and later on, sold his share of the company for $5000. The only reason I see here as to why he didn't accept the job offer was his pride and ego. If I was in his shoes, given the tremendous financial burden, I would swallow my pride and take it because it seems to me, the former (Elliot and Gretchen) were past what had happened before and were willing to move forward, to accomplish better things at the company. So get your facts straight buddy.

Well first of all, not that I'm remotely surprised to find this in a youtube comments section, but congrats Nicholas on being a glaring example of the flaws of humanity lol... Not to take anything away from Digum Nsa's original past, but Vince Gilligan said a long time ago that that precise point in his mind is when Walt became a bad guy (tho of course with the inaction at Jane's death being truly an evil nail in the coffin). Because yes, he is given this golden, couldn't be more perfect opportunity to truly help his family if wants to WITHOUT making everything about him. Of course Gilligan follows it with, but if he made that choice there wouldn't be a show. But it's not like pure charity Elliot and Gretchen are giving. If I remember right the offer is to come back and work at the company, and it ain't like they intend him to be a receptionist or custodian or anything. He'll have done work he was educated for. But no, Walt WANTS the power and to live within the danger that comes and he immediately brings to his family in the meth cooking. I mean fucks sake, there's a reason "pride cometh before the fall" (paraphrasing) has endured all these centuries.

Walt totally won hands down. He achieved everything he wanted before his inevitable death. His family may have hated him, but Walt did it for him. The most telling sign of that was long before his death. During his intervention that Skyler, set up. When Walt finally gets the pillow and it's his turn to talk. He talks about how all his life he felt he never had a say so in anything. It was clear he truly loved being a criminal because for the first time ever. He was in control and during his time as a meth king pin, he had never felt more alive, even though he was dying. It really wasn't so much about his family, but about Walt getting the final say so, doing things his wzy, being the boss, being in control. An like the video said he had a smile on his face as he lay dying because he knew he won. He got everything he set out to do done. This was definitely a total win for Walt through and through. its only a loss if walter realizes he lost. if he died happy then he won. things only have value if you place value in them therefore if you lose something that has no value who cares. he valued is own ego which was tied to two things, his abilities as a scientist and his ability to provide for his family, none of which he was doing when his family was happy and stable as a high school science teacher. he outsmarted all his opponents and the only reason he died was because he caught pieces of a bullet that he himself fired. he tied up all his loose ends and made sure all his ducks were in a row before he went to save jesse. he knew there was a chance he would die and he accepted that. in the end he fulfilled his two desires, to prove he was smarter than his opponents and to give his family the money they need to survive which he struggled with in the beginning as a good honest teacher. he also valued jesse. there was a moment at the end when they look at each other and it feels like they made their peace walt nods as if to say "are we good?" and jesse nods as if to say "thank you" and gives him one final look before he gets in the car. if he could die happy knowing that his family hates him then their opinion of him was not something he truly valued because they never valued him unless he was giving them something. walt jr was ashamed at his dad being a nerd unless he was being macho like hank and skylar always seemed dissatisfied with her husband in every aspect of their relationship. it seems like it was Jesse's opinion that he valued because Jesse made him feel needed and smart and admired unlike Skylar and Walt jr. jesse had a sort of reverence for walt that he could not find elsewhere being a simple science teacher despite his genius intellect. jesse acknowledged his genius and took it seriously and learned from it and became a chemist in his own right. jesse appreciated chemistry in the same way walt did, in a way that his family found boring or alien to them. in a sense jesse was his son and thats why walt was willing to die to save him rather than staying alive and trying to mend his broken family even if in secret.

Old Man Olson Yes, how lovely if Walt would have just remained a door mat, an emasculated broke door mat, then he would have died with his family's respect. Wow..um, you have a weird view on what winning is. Also, that little limpy kid will appreciate that 10 million years from now. Skyler's ass would have been in trouble regardless. Was she or was she not ripping off the IRS and BEFORE she even knew about Walt's cooking meth??? If not for Walt's meth money she would have been in big time trouble. Walt's family was kind of shitty.

Walt saying, "I am the Danger" for me, is the single greatest line in dramatic television history.

This was such a satisfying ending. I knew Walt was going to die and I thought the ending would be more tragic but I love that he avenged Hanks death by killing Jack and his hitmen and Walt somewhat made amends with Skyler and got to see Walt Jr. and Holly one last time. He killed Lydia and freed Jesse which they both just looked at each other and smiled and nodded. Walt didn't get killed by the police or arrested, he just bled out in the lab with a smile on his face. Best ending ever. Though I still feel awful for Brock

@@finnmacmanus5723 of course it's Todd's fault for Killing her but Jess put her in the situation that got her killed he could have prevented it from happening in the first place by not betraying Walt and getting himself captured all before Walt poisoned Brock Jesse him self was preparing to get himself over his head with some very bad people walt tried warning him about. He is not blame less here
