Grey Matter is actually one of my favorite episodes in the series. To me, it's the biggest opportunity he has to change course- either go back to working with the company he co-founded or continue his path to cooking meth (giving the title "Grey Matter" a double meaning, as it's a grey matter for him to deal with). His pride winning and overtaking the legal road says everything about who he is, as the show would've ended right then and there if he had taken the job back at the company he co-founded.

For sure, pride and his narcicisst Ego are his main driving forces. - We, as most of the audience, still side with him for major parts of the series because we learn indeed how deeply humiliating his "normal" life for the past decades has been; both at work and in his family: That he did not marry Gretchen, partly because of the wealth of her family, and the resulting power imbalance in their relationship, is another - related - story.

One point I’d like to make is that it’s not just random that Walt’s brother in law “just so happens” to be a DEA agent. Walt initially goes on a ride along with Hank to get him into the meth biz, so Hank is integral in the creation of Heisenberg. The two are inextricably linked. So their car and mouse relation doesn’t feel contrived or random.

The first time I ever watched through breaking bad I was in jail. AMC played a marathon leading up to the series finale, and I caught the marathon from the first episode onward. I wasn’t one of the “tv guys” in our pod but I got sucked in to the show, even tho I actively tried to ignore the show from across the room. But the pilot hooked me. I watched almost every episode (missed a couple here & there.) In hindsight, it was a memorable way to have first viewed the show. I felt like Walt Jr, actually. I was watching this dad character from across a room, couldn’t hear what was being said often, had to piece together plot points, and was way off because I had missed tons of details. (It was basically impossible to hear that 24” Tv, 15ft up high in a concrete room where everything echos.) I got out of jail a little while after and went back to rewatching BB, and Tv ain’t been the same since. BTW, thanks again for these videos! You’re doing a great job and you’ve earned the success you’re getting with the channel.

Another thing you didn't mention in Gray Matter that I absolutely love is that it fully explains why Jesse says yes to them cooking as well rather than just brushing it off and just leaving the audience assuming that he says yes because Jesse asked him in the previous episode They show that 1) he needs the money and 2) he tried cooking with badger but the product wasn't good enough for Jesse He says yes to Walt because, as you said, he's been changed enough by the quality of the product to feel like he can now only cook if it is as good as Walt's, and he can only do that with Walt itself

I love how "Breaking Bad" takes a fairly libertarian approach to the war on drugs in my opinion. They show that no matter how hard the DEA fights, people like Walt and Gus blend right in while making millions off of the illegal trade. It shows how all it takes is a few men either with nothing to lose or willing to risk it for the money to eventually supply the whole southwest and even parts of Europe with an illegal substance. A bit exaggerated but not impossible with the super labs that actually exist in Mexico today. Obviously it takes a whole network but Walt, Jesse and Gus were at the heart of it and without them, it all fell apart. Even with an 8 billion dollar a year budget, all the war on drugs has done is create a war on the border between cartels and government. It's caused insane amounts of violence for control of the black market ranging from the very top of it to the street dealers fighting over corners and customers. It has caused the end users to get anything from a close to pure product to some garbage cut with chili powder that might not even be the drug they paid for. You have people like Gale too who understand adults will make the decision to use drugs reguardless of their legal status and he just wanted to supply them with the products they want in an unadulterated form. No matter how much money and law enforcement we throw at the problem, it's not going anywhere and we need to look for another approach. We couldn't even enforce alcohol prohibition and now there's thousands of drugs the government is making a desperate attempt to keep from users and there's still an opioid epidemic going on. It's like a balloon, they push down on pills, heroin fills in for it. They push down on heroin, fentanyl pops up. Now we've got drugs like carfentanil which is something like 100X stronger than fentanyl coming out and it's going to keep happening. Government will never be able to stop the importation of drugs so powerful, the amount needed to get intoxicated is almost microscopic. They can't do it even when the amount needed is huge! Every single day, truckloads of drugs come into the country via land, sea and air or are made right here in the country. We started with oxycontin and other prescription opioids in the early 2000s which were dangerous but at least users knew what they were getting and what the dosage of it was and now fentanyl and even carfentanil, a literal elephant tranquilizer, took over and the amount users get is just a guessing game. Fake oxycodone and xanax pills are now common and drug use is more dangerous than it ever has been in history. Nothing good comes from the black market having control over a trade, just violence and death. Law enforcement has failed to do anything to stop the problem long term, just a revolving door prison system. We live in a world where even prisons, the most restrictive places in the country, are filled with illegal substances. If we can't keep drugs out of a prison, there's absolutely no chance we'll ever be successful at stopping them from reaching the rest of our society. Wherever there's a demand, someone will find a way to meet it with a supply and they'll make a good sum of money while doing so. When that much undocumented money is involved, violence will generally follow. Until it's properly regulated, the wrong people will make that money and violence will be their only option to keep control. I wish more people could see the failure of the war on drugs and we'd finally end this silly game of whack a mole killing people daily and making criminals into millionaires. Believe me, I wish the system we had right now worked but clearly it doesn't. There's a lot of things I wish but that doesn't change the reality.
@sasha8345 Жыл бұрын
that’s definitely not a libertarian take. in fact it’s a very leftist look at a system that’s all about making people rich. in the end it’s not even about the drugs, the show could be about anything. it’s about empires and money. the only thing proven to help addicts is a clean place to get high with available resources

@@mercedesspencer4342 Thanks man! If all goes as planned, I'll have a pharmacology degree in the next year or so and I'd like to use the facts about how drugs interact with the body as well as the criminal side of them to find a way to make a strong case for changing current drug laws. I've considered writing a book but was always thinking more about a biography, likely with coauthors that could join in to give the biography of a group of teens in a city during a certain era instead of just about one person. The idea is a bit like the film "kids" if you've ever seen that. Anyways, while I'm waiting for coauthors to actually get some stuff put on paper, I think I might start a rough draft on my take on the failure that is the war on drugs and see where it goes. Maybe reach out to an ex cop I know that disagree with the war on drugs, friends in prison for drugs, friends who are or were addicted to hard drugs, etc to hopefully give a perspective from all sides... I appreciate the kind words, thanks for reaching out with suggestions!

I swear to god when I say it: Tuco was absolute eye candy since the moment he appeared on screen for the first time. He is pure villain/antagonist material and every scene he has he just goes absolutely wild from full autoing the shit out of a random cow with an m4a1 and saying I FUCKING DESTROYED HIM!! To beating the shit out of his lackey just for annoying him. Like legit I was just as dumbstruck as Jesse and Walt when I saw that for the first time. With or without the context from Saul it is still an astonishing scene nonetheless. I always laugh my ass off at every scene of him bc he's just that damn wild to the point of absolute comedy and I also get a chill down my spine bc he is also intimidating at the same time. It is such a good balance and all of this makes his firefight with Hank even more impactful. Truly an intimidating villain is already introduced in THE FIRST SEASON!! Walt never gave him any product and he was cooking a new batch so there was none cooked there at the site. Crazy Eight had the baggie of Meth hidden in a secretive spot behind his car stereo, which was placed there long before Crazy Eight and Emilio arrived at the site. And Hank never said the meth "looked pure", he just commented that it was "too white." CORRECTION AFTER RE-WATCH: It does appear that Crazy Eight did have the gram of white powder that Jesse brought him as a sample hidden behind his car radio, as later Hank said he tested it and it was very pure. My Bad...

Imagine if those bullets in the first episode would have been shot a little lower... the show would have been over in the first episode.

I feel like the moment walt became heisenburg was blowing up tuco. Mfer walked into a drug compound with armed guards with his only weapon being impact sensitive, shock sensitive, heat sensitive, primary explosive

Kiwi is the greatest KZbinr of all time. He’s like Saul Goodman, Walter White Mike Kim and Jesse all sprinkled into one person with a little touch of Gus to top it all off
