I've heard the criticism about Jack being a weak replacement for Gus, and I think more importantly, those people completely miss the point that Walter/Heisenberg has become the villain of season 5. The Jack and his nazis are there to show how far Walter has gone down the bad choice road.

Who could replace Gus. It showed how one drug dealer , Gus, was organized, diligent and saw the bigger picture etc. That was what Walt aspired to be. Instead he let his ego ruin everything Walt and Gus both felt invincible. Things went downhill with Jack- he was sloppy, didn't care about business or relationships with "coworkers". This is what Walt ultimately became.

@@JR-me7yk It wasn't some random white trash dude who was Walt's undoing, it was Walt. He made so many bad and flat out sloppy decisions because he felt invincible. Leaving incriminating evidence in his house in plain sight, getting himself into deeper water by not cashing out when the only two people he could trust decided to quit, and of course working with complete and utter human trash who place no value on human life, much less his or anyone else he cared about. He's the one who made Jesse his enemy, he's the one who let Hank find evidenced that confirmed that he was Heisenberg and he was most definitely the one who led Jack directly to his money. Jack didn't outwit Walter, he overpowered him through sheer force because Walter allowed him to. Of course after Walt has been completely humbled by the event and has nothing left to lose, he easily defeats Jack. His fall from the throne in Ozymandias was completely his own fault

The Marie Kleptomaniac arc was actually less meaningless than I originally thought on my first watch. I still do believe that the season 1 stealing plot wasn't planned to go anywhere, but the season 4 reoccurrence was actually some genius writing to get Hank back on the trail of Walt. Right before Marie gets caught stealing in season 4, Hank has pretty much given up on the Heisenberg case as he is bedridden and very busy with his minerals, but after Marie gets caught, this causes detective Roberts to bring Hank Gale's notebook, since Hank owes Roberts a favor for getting Marie out of trouble. This notebook is what puts Hank back on the case and closer than ever to finding Heisenberg. Without Marie's kleptomaniac era, Hank never sees the notebook and most likely never catches Walt. The Breaking Bad writers took a failed plotline from season one and turned it into maybe the most pivotal part of the DEA's search for Heisenberg. Bravo, Vince.

I think the point of Marie stealing even early on was also to challenge the audience. Like how much more upset are we at Marie when we learn she steals, gets her family involved in her crime and then stubbornly refuses to admit the truth when called out on it than we are Walter who is doing the same thing but 100 times worse?
@autumn8987
@autumn8987 Жыл бұрын
When Skyler pressed Marie about stealing and told Marie she wanted her sister back, Marie broke down and apologized to skyler. She was willing to set aside her pride and be there for Skyler. This helped her and skyler become close again and they became a strong pair. This is pretty much the opposite of what happens with Skyler and Walter. It's a neat parallel, and it redeems Marie and makes her a strong character

About Season 5, you mentioned that Skyler is suddenly team Walt, and I never felt it myself. I'm pretty sure Walter TNTing a nursing home, anyone would be scared to go against him. Not to mention, she went through extreme amounts of stress that lead to her breaking down in the car wash and her attempt at walking into a body of water in Grand Theft Auto Vice City(sorry for censoring, I don't wanna get flagged). Combine this with having to deal with Beneke's aftermath, I don't think she sides with Walt as much as she's just given up. Ofc, the whole Hank thing exists, and, I don't know if it's implied, it reads like she saw Hank was more interested in getting Walter over helping her, which is probably not going to go well over a person who has been stressed and scared for like a few months. There's also the self-preservation angle of not wanting to mess with the law since she also had a hand in Walt's business. tl;dr homegirl is tired and probably wants a break.

21:41 thank you for mentioning this! Yes, I agree that skyler, before she knew, could be a very frustrating character. Because the audience wanted to go back to the exciting plotlines with Jesse and Walter, because the silent treatment is quite frustrating, because she is too smart to be blind to what's going on, because she acts in a somewhat antagonistic role, being that she's challenging the main characters, -- it resulted in many in audience beginning to dislike her. But then, by the time she knows, is in the scheme, has her own badass moments, acts in ways that all other characters would, I don't understand how people remained hating her. Especially since around this time, your sympathy for Walt is supposed to be dwindling a little. By seasons 4 and 5 (even 3, after Jane's death) the audience begins to take a step back and it slowly gets clearer and clearer, that *even if you still root for him, as a main character*, he is immensely flawed and those who oppose him, those who he hurts, are not antagonists, and should be sympathize with, even if just to a degree. Something that baffles me is the misunderstanding of skylers actions that culminate in Crawl Space. It is painted out to the audience, loud and clear, that she needs Ted to pay this money, *not because she is in love with him, not because she will continue to cheat with him*, but because *if he doesn't, the FBI will be on HER ass too, and they will look into her finances and notice these discrepancies, notice the laundering, and will catch onto Walt's business*. Yet I hear people in my classes and online discussing the show, who act as though she was a terrible bitch for this. Who act like she was completely selfish, when really it was an act for her family and husband, an act of self preservation, that is completely justified within the narrative. Baffles me.

I watched Malcolm In The middle when It first aired and loved Bryan Cranston as Hal. When I watched breaking Bad I thought the casting mad perfect sense, after the series finale on Breaking bad and went back and rewatched Malcom, there is an episode, I can’t remember the exact one but Bryan pulls that quick change of acting in one character to acting in another in a flash the way he seemlessly does between Walt and Heisenberg, It just makes perfect sense, Bryan was always the perfect cast for Walter White.

Skyler got her pride hurt and refused to listen to him, manipulating Walt into going along with her. So I view it as a sign of Skyler being better than expected at this but also being as petty as the others. She never took him seriously.

Awesome video as always! Im amazed at how you can put out these high quality long form retrospectives so quickly. Love these videos, you're so underrated. I was actually writing a long ass comment but my battery ran out so RIP... quite annoying, but oh well, I will right my thoughts again a bit quicker. I'm honestly more excited for your BCS retrospective which on rewatch I now think is better than BrBa, which was honestly slightly weaker on rewatch for me. It's still a masterpiece and one of the best but it went from my Top 1 at one point all the way to my Top 11 after watching many more shows and rewatching it again recently. I just don't quite think its the creme of the creme anymore, but it does have something almost no other show has with that amazing build up, and every season getting better and better arguably culminating at its peak. Meaning S1 is easily the weakest season. It's a great start, but tonally inconsistent, a bit uneven in areas, too over the top (like walt blowing up a car at a gas station with 0 consequences, and the "this is not meth" scene not making sense), and like you mentioned the side characters like Hank were quite one note and underdeveloped. I was surprised on rewatch when some of the most memorable episodes like the one where they killed Crazy 8 weren't that amazing as a whole because of a weaker side plot. Still though the main drama with Walt and Jesse, the overall intrigue with the plot and the acting is just excellent, but it is further weakened by it being a shortened season. Which is why it shocks me how some people consider S2 to be the weakest when that season to me seems like such a massive improvement from S1. The side characters just get more fleshed out, the writing is overall better/tigther, and it expands the story a lot more. I actually think that despite the slower episodic style in the middle, those episodes were a lot more consistent and well written than S1 and parts of S3. I would call this season amazing if it wasn't for the stupidly over the top ending. I don't think the issue was that people expected more, I think it's just such a forced and absurdly over the top ending that is totally pointless in the grand scheme of things, and the worst part is the message it sent was said already earlier in the season in a more subtle and effective way. Walt ambitious pushes Jesse to get Combo to expand on his territory, which gets combo killed, which gets Jesse to do drugs again, which gets Jane to do drugs again as well, then leading to her overdose where Walt let's jane died. Brilliant! But nah airplane goes boom! S3 and S2 are probably the closest in quality for me but because S3 is much more uneven with the most amount t of weaker eps, but it also has way more highs than Season 3, and the best ending from all the seasons... yes even S4-5, shoot me... but don't get jesse to do it. On rewatch the first 5 or so episodes of S3 were kind of a drag, and I felt like It was obvious what the writers were trying to do from scene to scene and how this show was being written on the go rather than planned out. It honestly just felt like stalling, and I never felt this way with the middle of S2, or any of BCS (except parts of S6) which is a much slower paced show. BCS is slow with purpose, and so its always engaging, everything is important in some way, and it's just the better made show overall. Ironically I actually thought Fly was one of the highlights of the season, but yeah when this season gets going, it gets going. Although it still has some dumb over the top moments like with the twins, but yep, it was awesome. Season 4 is the best for a lot of people, but I'm going to have to agree with your criticims of it. The beginning is just a bit too slow paced for me but I do think the overall writing has improved and matured. I also have to bring up one of my biggest disappointment with the show on rewatch... the cartel storyline is painfully thin. There's like a mini boss introduced every season. Bolsa is introduced a few episodes before he's killed off, Don Eladio has a single flashback before he's killed off 2 eps later. I absolutely love that episode but the fact his plan goes off that perfectly and with no consequcnes is BS. Not to mention the questionable stuff you said with Gus' plan, and stuff like in S3 where he brings the street dealers to meet with him... bro how are you exposing yourself like that?! But yeah, the last few episodes are probably the peak of the show and one of the best run of episodes ever. I absolutely love how we're put in a tough place with Jesse honestly being better off with Gus and how we root for Gus against Don Eladio. Imaging if these things were more set up, it could've been godly. The best thing BCS did for BB was actually fleshing out the cartel. Face off is awesome, but I'm sorry, Tyrus is an idiot and so is Walt, I know he checked before, but holy shit the bomb is so obvious, it's barely hidden! And Gus walking out💀come on that was goofy af. But yeah this is the first season I'd consider BB was top tier. Again with S5A I'm shocked some people call it the weakest, It's the most consistent part of the show for me, every episode was above average and it had some bangers like the train ep and say my name. I do agree Walt's evil was a bit over the top, but I also love how his ego is just let out and his elaborate scheming, it's just so fun, plus we got to see so much more of how Gus controlled things, and I like how killing Gus was almost a mistake. But yeah obviously the highlight of the season is the second part which is just consistently amazing. This is easily one of the best TV seasons and final seasons ever. Ozymandias is maybe the greatest episode of TV ever, with Granite state it's my 2 fav eps back to back, Confessions make the top 3 of the show for me. But I do have some slight issues, I think the Nazi's were well executed, I love Todd! But I don't think the issue people had with them were that they were a "replacement" to Gus or not proper seasonal villains, more so that they were a more cartoonishly evil force that makes Walt seem less bad and it's like the show glorifies Walt in the end. I think the finale is extremely satisfying and amazing, but yeah I was one of those people who thought it was TOO satisfying, although its still a 9/10 ending, just not quite a 10/10 (The Shield, Mr. Robot, The Americans, The Sopranos), which is still extreme high praise from me. So yeah Idk if anyone cares to read this. I just love talking about my favorite TV shows. Love your content man, cant wait for the BCS video.

New to your channel but this was great and you got a sub 😁 cant wait for BCS! The only thing I would just critique is that the fued with gus wanting to take out walt wasnt too out of left field for me. Gus, like walt, has an insane amount of pride. No one talks down to him and walt is too unpredictable to trust. He built a relationship with gal, but walt is constantly questioning gus and doesnt fall in line. So walt killing gus's drug dealers without permission was another hit on why he needed to be eliminated. Walt doesnt think about what could be the ripple effect of his actions. Its understandable from gus's perspective on why walt is a fly that needs to be squashed. But still this was amazing work. You are a very talented youtuber ❤
