Is South Korea on the verge of a nuclear breakout? Much of the speculation in Washington and Seoul about South Korea’s nuclear ambitions has been informed by a handful of recent public opinion polls. This has created an echo chamber effect in Washington and Seoul where some experts have accepted South Korean nuclear ambitions as a reality.
CSIS Victor Cha conducted the first U.S. multi-question polling of strategic elites in South Korea on the nuclear question. The new findings of this study “Breaking Bad: South Korea's Nuclear Option” have significant policy implications and the author provides several recommendations for the United States.

you are gonna get a different answer if u separate out the opinion from the sanctions, remember the words about sanctions comes before opinion and I would not be surprised if that's what the strategic elites focused on the potential sanctions that south Korea could face.

will US take Nuke from China, Russia, N.Korea in behalf of S.Korea? S.Korea without their nuke deterrent - China, N.Kor and Russia can walk all over S.Korea no matter how US provides "protective measure". Let S.Korea use Nuclear power submarines, aircraft carriers and ships etc.. it doesn't have to be nuke bombs. In fact, S.Korea isn't actually asking to develop local nuke program, but use Nuclear power for military usage.

I the North has them, then the South should have them. Probably secretly already do.

If South Korea elects to develop nuclear weapons, is there a need for the United States to provide military support? What happens if an isolationist, similar to Trump, is elected to the White House? Can South Korea count on the United States to actually come to South Korea's defense?

You're implying US will give up New York for Seoul; no they will not. Nuclear deterrence makes sense for South Korea.

An enlightening study, I think it’s possible some humans are predisposed to conflict, aggression power control, fear, discrimination etc so it’s difficult to get everyone singing from the same page. I find military exhalation convulsive, it’s evident countries are proud of their military capability likely because it’s affiliated with national progress and advancement. Military values of honour, valour, defence are admirable, however I think there is a clear distinction between human value and ‘military parades’ especially where the military represents national interest at crossfire with human rights. Infusing military doctrine into nationalist values and thereby capitalising of the male psyche does not set a good precedent. I think if transparency was the frontier of military engagement, military service personnel would be reduced significantly. My perception is a military industrial complex coupled with weaponisation of the dollar. The US are a world power and designed/detonated the first atomic bomb, refusal to relax currency controls and unwillingness to defend human rights suggests lessons of the past are not resonating through the right avenues. South Korea set a good example, unfortunately I think a good number of nations are reflecting the American Power Structure. I can’t understand why leaders of the past didn’t have enough insight to think expanding nuclear capability was a bad idea. I’m not sure if a more fair and just governance from America would have the desired impact on other world leaders, so it’s very well possible my criticism would not lead to a unified international economy. Countries depending on mutual deterrence, via the US, should also lobby for humanitarian causes rather than passive agreement or neutrality. I think China has an unfulfilled duty towards Ukrainian citizens and combatants under conscription.

No more additional cost !! for god sake please bring back your army from S Koreea !! We will have nuke bombs and lethal weapons enough to take self-defense by ourselves independently against NK China Russia and Japan !! We have been sick and tired of attitudes of Trump and NK. Every Koreans are aware that US will not protect SK if US is attacked by NK with nuke bomb.
