Exactly it was a good analysis except he missed the point of the Milgram experiment they got nothing from it. In order to ensure no bribery they paid the subjects prior to the experiment and told them the money was theirs's no matter what. The point wasn't that they kept going to get something the point was under the pressure from authority they felt compelled to complete actions they did not want to do and made them sick to their stomachs. Some nameless faceless authority figure aka the scientist was enough to make them work against their own moral compass even in the face of possible harming another person. The scientist was only allowed to say: the experiment must go on. You must continue the experiment. Regardless of how you feel you must continue the experiment. I watched the tapes those people were in agony. Grown men were having voices crack, rubbing themselves all over and at some points were on the verge of tears. Multiple times they asked to stop. If someone asked to stop they would be told to continue until they either tried to leave or refused to continue at all.

I disagree that his family didn't care about him. He could have also avaoided the medical debt by accepting the offer from Grechen(whoever her name is spelt.) . Also, they offered to employ him, in which we would have earned a very good salary. Basically, his pride drove him into this. He could have choosen to live a law abiding life debt free. It would be as wealthy as the drug money but it would be wealthy enough to live a decent life.

I always felt the family were a bit embarrassed and Skylar had to be the decision maker which frustrated her cause she knew Walt was a pushover. But Gretchens offer was from guilt of what they had done to him. Consolation prize stuff. These were hand outs....from something he built and got shut out from. Walt couldnt accept that. It would have meant he truely was what everyone thought he was. A weak pathetic person with no spine. Walt is put upon, and harmless but underneath he is full of building resentment and bitterness which spills over once he slolwy sees and comes to understand the level of power he weilds. In a lot of ways Walt could have but didnt control his life so once he knows he is dying this is something noone will take from him. He says all he did is for his family but thats just another lie, and when he accepts that he goes full Hiesenberg. Thats how i viewed it anyway.

Walt was offered by a former friend and business partner to have all his medical bills paid. It would have been great for him and his family, at the expense of his pride and a blow to his ego. Then throughout the series he has multiple chances to walk away from crime, long after he has enough money to pay for his treatment, but instead digs himself and everyone around him deeper.

I noticed his cancer was not only a physical representation of his limited time to do what he really wanted to do, but a metaphor for his time being limited to propel him to do what he wanted. Notice how whenever he feels like he shouldn't be doing these things or has second thoughts about all of it, that his cancer starts up again. But when he goes about his breaking bad business, it seems to be nonexistent almost. And, technically he did beat cancer. He never died by it, but by a bullet. A bullet that symbolized the life he decided to take on. Instead of dying by something that was a part of his mundane life, he dies by something that was related to the life he wanted to live. That's how I see it.

I agree with the premise that big pharma had an influence on his decision, but, ultimately it was Walter White who chose that path. During season 2, when they found he was on remission and reduced his tumor to 80% of it's size, Walt cried-not because he was close to getting cure, but because he now had to admit that he cooked because he liked it and not because he needed to.

Then explain why Elliot literally offered to pay for all Walters treatment, AND provide him with a much higher paying job in season one. But he turned it down because of his own pride and ego. Something that people often overlook is that Walt was never forced into the path/lifestyle he chose. His ego was the only thing that led him to dealing/cooking drugs. He always had the way out A.) accepting the money from his rich friends (a hit to his ego, but something that would have saved his family) or B.) being honest with Skyler that they didn't have enough money and brainstorming ways to solve that. Yes, he was trapped in a life that was certainly not meeting his expectations. However, if he had used the ingenuity he showed as a criminal I'm certain that he would have found a way to handle the problem.

That's an interesting observation, however consider the corollary - the ego being on the same scale as personal safety (if not more important) to a character that is by all means extremely rational. In other words, one can become the shadow self when the ego is crushed. This is probably what happened in pre-WW2 also, because of the Weimar conditions.

When I say satanic I don't mean evil, but in the lines of "Do what thou wilt", which according to Crowley, should be the only law. Moon's is suggesting that White broke because he gave in to his darkest desires, and that humans respond equally to pressure in the envinroment, as if they were diamonds and not inheritors of the divine spark, which only means capacity to create, be it good or evil. Another reason to say it is satanic, is that he deliberately inverts human nature. Humans are not shaped by nature, we shape it, just look around. Now can we subvert nature? That is still to be answered. I don't think so due to my background. Can we invert gravity? Can we create energy from nothing? There are laws even in nature. Walter breaks because he broke natural law, he forfeited everything he held dear in exchange for what he thought he wanted. But we as humans want many things but we don't really know what we need, until we get what we want. Walter didn't want to be respected or feared, he wanted to be loved, but love is given not taken. He wanted love and got fear because it was what he gave others.

I have a theory regarding the show. I here stories all the time about people who get cured of major illnesses simply because they regained hope. I think that the reason Walter was cured of his cancer wasn't because of the chemo or any form of treatment, but the fact that he finally had the ability to control his own life, rendering him in a much better place mentally. If he would've continued with his daily life as a teacher and carwasher, he surely would've died of his illness.

Maybe you'd get it. Walt's prode was the real evil. I have a coworker who got cancer and he still had to pay around 1600 per month to get his medications. They were not on the government approved lists, and our insurance coverage maxed out for him after 4 months. Now obviously this is still less expensive than the US - but cancer is still an expensive illness in Canada. He is still alive, last I heard the cancer was in remission.

Here's an interesting thing to consider, Walt is entirely culpable in Jane's death. Around the birth of his daughter there's a moment when Walt is shown how a baby could suffocate on it's own vomit when laying on it's back. He was well aware of what was happening to Jane. Rather than act, he allowed her to die knowing full well it would benefit him.

Quitting addiction is not as easy as just saying "We don't do drugs from now on" the fact that it was heroine she was addicted made it even worse. Since heroine is incredibly addictive. Walter was offered three million dollars for three months. His family would have seen the three million dollars, and at worst, Gus would have killed him. He was expecting to die anyway. Walt did not appreciate what he was being offered, just like when he sold Gray Matter. Walt had no reason to fear Gus killing him. He only killed Gus so the show could go on. Walt had the problem of not appreciating what he had. If he did, he would not have sold Gray Matter.

I feel this was different to Gray Matter. With Gray Matter, he sold his share for something like $5K, some quick cash, and didn’t appreciate what this company would come to be later on. He lost a lot this way. So Gus offering him the 3M, probably set off alarms in his head that he could make more, and shouldn’t settle for that. Plus, it was never as much about the money, Walter admitted he ended up doing it for the sake of doing it. He reached his financial goals repeatedly, but kept setting his goal post further all the time so he could keep going.

I feel like this video has a lot of good points but it also misses Walter’s final thoughts that he reveals in the end. This business made him feel alive. He was good at it, he started the business thinking it was only being done for his family and the money. But the truth was, he was doing it for himself. There was moments of regret, but I feel Walter in the final episode probably would have agreed with the sentiment of “If I had the choice to restart, I’d do it all again.”

As someone who's entire life has witnessed the worst life can throw at them, death of family and friends, drug-abuse, sexual abuse, low paying jobs, the never ending cycle of debt, my exes cheating on me the list goes fucking on and on and even throughout all of this the only thing keeping me together is my mental fortitude and knowing right from wrong. I've had numerous opportunities to enter in the under world of drug dealing and gang violence but realised that isn't the life I wanted to go down and I kind of lived precariously through Breaking Bad. Like it made me think what if I end up making fat stacks of cash but at the same time losing the person I was or worse ending up in prison or dead. There has been plenty of times were I've hit rock-bottom and thought well if life is taking everything from me I'll take it from someone else, what ever that may be but never did in the end thankfully. Life is a fickle bitch, but it has its ways of leading you on the right path, it just takes a little effort and determination to get there. Another great video as always Moon, 10 months too late but glad I watched this.

@@benjibader32 Shows that pretend you're a total sheep who doesn't notice it when they introduce stuff for shock value but don't bring it to fruition because it would mess with their pre-planned outcome, just for one example. Or shows that get stuck on a gimmick and are afraid to develop their characters so that their role in the story slightly changes over time. Or when some writers just don't feel like they owe the audience narrative satisfaction, and so they "subvert expectations" by averting a satisfactory conclusion, either by dropping the information too soon or too early, or by taking the "mystery box" approach at times they shouldn't. Overall, some writers don't have their audience and their long-term enjoyment with the show in mind when they write, but rather what they can accomplish for themselves, how they can one-up the audience in terms of expectations, and how they can get away with blatant award-baiting. I'm not saying that awesome moments or shocking scenes are bad, but they are earned through hard work. It's just disrespectful on a writer's part to want the people in bars go "woooooooo", while not caring about how it holds up. Nothing against people in bars, but most of them only enjoy the social aspect at that particular moment, and later they too come to realize how bad the writing was. The thing is, I love that the writers were very careful and respectful in Breaking Bad, and they had respect for the story and the audience, because they worked in a framework of rules they set up for themselves, and then they delayed short-term pay-off in order to make it even better at a later time.

This analysis is leaving out the effect an authority figure has on the actions of others, which was the point of Milgrim's experiment. It wasn't "look, anyone can be evil" it was that people are more capable of performing evil acts when given the "I was just following orders" loophole. It's about how people can be manipulated into acting in a way they would otherwise condemn given the right circumstances. Leaving that out of this essay kind of makes it look like you're trying to force facts to conform to your predetermined conclusion.

His message is still true, the two aren't mutually exclusive. The participants in the milgrim experiment consciously chose to deliver the shocks - they had the option to get up and leave, to protest, to say no, at any time, but at the eager behest of the authoritative researchers, and driven by the deep, sadistic, monsterous curiosity within the human animal, almost everyone continued. I think maybe what youre trying to reconcile is that circumstances make us into monsters. Orders, hierarchies, powers that be. But the monster is also already inside of us. The capability to torture, murder, inflict the most horrible possible things is already inside of every one of us. Its the rejection of the shadow - of the monsterous element of the human animal, that makes people vulnerable to being overcome by it. If you don't know the pain you can cause - you wont control or direct it.

I'm not talking about minutiae or specifics here, but about patterns that arise to reveal motivations, which in our current year is completed aligned with incentives. I don't blame Moon for wanting to get redditors to watch him, but for someone who criticizes them, you would expect a less fedora approach. What I'm saying is that the comparisons he draws are disingenuous at best. This video is way below his usual quality, but he clearly has a goal on his mind. Note on the Milgram experiment, Milgram presented the results to make it seem like most people would obey orders, but if you look at his actual data, most people actually disobey when asked to harm someone (about a third complied, which is a significant percentage, but still not most)

Like most good stories, it is at least in some way an allegory. And while it may be more or less common to want to physically hurt people, there are a huge number of ways to embrace the harming of others, from excluding people socially to a parent or some other bully humiliating a child to a boss faking a yearly review so that he can avoid giving an employee a raise, etc. Our capacity for bad behavior is endlessly creative and routine in society at large. I think Breaking Bad shows us many ways Walter goes bad, and is basically a show about moral peril. Which is not just about Nazis or drug dealers, but you and me, every day.
