I love how the subtle changes of hue and the slight horizontal chalky path combine to create the dip in the ground leading towards the horizon. That suggestion of a hidden piece of landscape lengthens the road a lot whilst keeping the eyeline low.

Levitan is my favourite painter ...I just feel mesmerised by much of his work - he has a way to make the mundane special too...his technique of treading the line between reality and abstraction is something I would love to achieve...absolute genius imo and should be a household name amongst famous painters.

I only "discovered" Levitan a few months ago. His work is so powerful and evokes so much emotion.

It's one of those paintings that you feel like you're getting sucked into. I feel like I'm gonna suddenly be walking on that road, it engulfs you from either side.

I am surprised that you said so little about the artistic elements - brushwork, placement of horizon line, human figures, palette.

I’ve been reading the road of bones by Jeremy poolman which heavily references this painting. Arkhip kuinzhi’s moonlight on the dnieper also.

Note the lone traveler. Alone in a journey through this vastness. SO alone....
