The red card on Columbus's Jones highlights an extreme flaw in the rule. You speak to the rule about endangering another player but in that play, the Charlotte player endenagered HIMSELF by recklessly lunging in. I do not think this should be a foul on the person in possession, as it only incentives defenders to be reckless. A second later and HE is the one stepping on an ankle, and both would be because he was the one recklessly charging and lunging.

Also, they didn't even bother to look at Arfield stomping on Nagbe's lunging knee only minutes later. Much more deserving of a red and play was only stopped for the injury.

100% agree with you. I feel like I've seen this sort of play more frequently recently. There's been a couple recent PKs recently where a defender is clearing the ball and an attacker lunges in front of the defender's kicking leg. They do not get a touch or position on the ball, but because they "got kicked" they get the call. I dont understand how you can get a call by throwing yourself into the legs of someone making a normal soccer play like this

They don’t stop the game for head injuries because of advantages, they stop it for player safety. That isn’t a situation where VAR should intervene. @@MindOverMiller because you don’t get to complain about things like that only when it’s advantageous to you. @@MindOverMiller and that’s probably what should’ve happened. Since the ref didn’t stop play, the Rapids had plenty of opportunities to play the ball out if they were at all concerned. Calen, what on earth was Jones supposed to do differently? Or you're arguing that if an opponent lunges at you while dribbling you're supposed to dive out of the way? Or stop playing the ball? Or just fall down? Sharp margins with no intent is the right decision? For the offside call we're looking at blurry images and shades of turf from an angle 90 degrees off from a helpful one, taken from the International Space Station? I knew watching this game that Instant Replay would defend all the decisions, and you didn't disappoint. No wonder Wiebe dodged this one. You seem to neglect the seriousness of Jone's foul. This is a straight red card regardless of him having the ball. There are no mitigating circumstancies when the foul endangers the safety of a player. What's why those fouls are called "Serious foul play". It doesn't matter whether it's intentional or not. It doesn't matter whether Jones has the ball or not. This is a straight red card and it's not even debatable if you really know soccer rules. Messi underwent the same foul few weeks ago against Nashville in a Concacaf game. The so-called experts called it "incidental contact" or "Accident". But it wasn't. This is a joke right? If the Jones red card is to be the new standard for red cards then every player should just slide under the food of their opponent. We can end these games in 15 minutes or less by forcing a team to have to forfeit. Jones is dribbling the ball, he doesn't do anything dangerous other than move his foot in front of it as he's in motion. Do players just have to give the ball up now if someone is attempting to slide in? The offside on Arfsten wasn't called on the field and a pixelated image from the top of the stadium and a weird angle is "clear and obvious"? It has to be clear an obvious to overturn it since that wasn't what was called on the field. These are some idiotic takes and I hope Wiebe is back soon so that we don't have to hear any more of this BS. Do better.

Since we are all for "unconventional" angles, maybe this week we can get spy satellite footage for VAR to look at. Or cell phone video sent in by fans in the stands? (Shot on an iPhone of course) That in-depth analysis on the Jones call was a master class. How about applying that to the knee stomp Nagbe took minutes later. The lack of consistency and VAR playing armchair ref are the issues. Won't expect anything to change until it injures or severely impacts Messi and the Barca alumni retirement tour. Way to toe the company line and not "belabor" the issue. Glad you protected your paycheck. Hope it is worth your credibility.

Jones red: For me, this isn't about these referees or this particular play so much as it is a lack of fairness in these situations. Beyond a lack of intent, which isn't taken into consideration, is the lack of the notion of whether or not the player could have avoided causing injury or if the injured player is more at fault for putting himself in that situation in the first place. I think in this case, the challenger put himself in that situation. Jones was dribbling the ball. The ball did not get away from him. It may look like it in slow motion, but that's not a fair assessment in real time speed. He then has a challenge come in reaching for the ball and putting himself in a dangerous position. Jones tries to avoid the lunge and running directly through the challenger but cutting to his right which is when the contact occurred. The challenge only had a couple potential results. One was that he gets stepped on and the other that he gets run over. He had no business trying to make the challenge that he did, but because he touched the ball the bad challenge is forgiven and Jones gets a red.
@coryschrock7207
@coryschrock7207 2 ай бұрын
The challenge from the Charlottle player is the entire source of the problem. The way it happened, he gets cleated. If he's a split-second later, he's cleating Jones in the ankle. Both scenarios are entirely because Jones is standing upright in possession of the ball and dribbling, and the Charlotte player flies in for a sliding tackle. It looks bad on the replay and I can understand the host's argument reviewing the rules in this video, but to me it all comes down to the fact that Jones did nothing wrong- if you're arguing that he can't plant his foot and cut the ball like that, you're essentially saying that a reckless challenge from a defender is completely fine if they get lucky and cause the person in possession of the ball to step on them. You'd be saying it's the person in possession's responsibility to avoid the contact from a reckless challenge.
@MrCho14
@MrCho14 2 ай бұрын
@@coryschrock7207 Agreed. It is very similar to a PK called last week where the defender had his leg already coming forward to clear the ball when an attacker came in from behind, stuck his out stretched let between the ball and the defender's foot, and gets kicked. A PK was given after a VAR on field review. The player kicked had no business making the move he did. The only outcome was being kicked.

@@coryschrock7207exactly. They're misapplying the rules to Jones, who was dribbling the ball - not challenging the ball. "Excessive force" does not apply to the person with the ball. Really unfortunate that Weibe is on vacation as I don't think he would have towed the company line quite so hard (sorry Calen). For the Jones red you even say it looks worse the more you slow it down, and it sure does which is why slowing a collision of two players down where you have to go frame by frame to see what happened is not the way to give a red. A more experienced ref would have never given a red there as it was a bang bang type play and move on. If you call that a red, you HAVE to give a red to the Charlotte player who later does the same thing on Nagbe but you conveniently didn't cover that. The offsides call in the same game is ridiculous because you are using a super zoomed in shot of over the ref's shoulder as the best we have. Why wasn't this angle shown on the broadcast? right decision against Jones? You're out of your mind. Read the description for serious foul play: "A tackle or challenge" is literally the first qualifier. Jones was DRIBBLING the ball while Diani was TACKLING/CHALLENGING for the ball. The part about "endangers the safety of an opponent" is completely dependent on if they're making a challenge for the ball. He's simply not. Never ever ever is that to the level of "SERIOUS FOUL PLAY". The ref was in a perfect position to see it and didn't call a foul. It was only a red card after VAR review. The problem is that VAR is only supposed to be for "clear and obvious" errors....should have never been reviewed. It only looks bad as you said "if you slow it down"....how about don't slow it down and then decide if it's a "clear and obvious error". It's not. After all that, Arfield had an even worse TACKLE/CHALLENGE on Nagbe (studs end up on the inside of Nagbe's knee while Nagbe is on the ground and Arfield is standing)....but that time, the ref didn't call anything and no VAR review. It was way more in line with the description of Serious Foul Play. This video is propaganda. MLS needs to pay the qualified refs and send the replacements home. This is a disgrace to the league.

That's an odd take. He didn't say, "I think they might have gotten it right." He was very definitive in stating he thinks they got it right. Should he have said, "I think they clearly and obviously got it right!"?

Question, after the var check dissalowed a penalty for Fc, how was it nycfs ball. Dado clearly had possesion of the ball before and after the penalty was called. BUT WE STILL GOT THE WIN, VAMOS FCC.

My problem with the Cincy handball is not so much that it was waved off, that’s no biggie and the clear correct call. My problem is that the ref stops a legit attack with the ball in Cincy possession inside the box for it, then after the review Charlotte gets a free drop. Shameful
@MrCho14
@MrCho14 2 ай бұрын
I don't think that's shameful. The referee called what he believed was a penalty. Without VAR, that's the end of it and nobody looks back other than to say maybe it wasn't a legit call. Sure, the referee could have not called it, but that's not doing his job. If he believes there is a foul, especially a PK, then he calls it. This situation has always been a downside to how VAR works.
@ArgonWolf1

@@MrCho14 If it wasnt a clear handball he shouldve waved play on, then VAR can go back and look at it and stop play if it turns out it was a handball. It just shows that this ref hasnt worked with VAR much that he'd blow that play dead for anything less than a certain call
@MrCho14
@MrCho14 2 ай бұрын
@@ArgonWolf1This isn't about that, or any particular, referee. There are plenty of times it is this season, but not this one. This is the same discussion that has been had many times since VAR came about. The referee absolutely thought it was handling which is why he blew the whistle. Protocol requires them to call the came as if there is no VAR with VAR there to recommend review for situations they think were wrong. No referee will not call a PK they think should be based on their angle. By doing this, they put the threshold to overturn the call on the available video to be a clear and obvious error which often isn't there. This is one of the gotchas of doing it this way where play can be stopped on the field giving a disadvantage to the attacking team if the call is changed. This is also exactly why the AR keeps the flag down if they believe a play is offside but there is a clear goal scoring opportunity. Until referees are allowed to hold calls on fouls, like the flag is held on offside, this is a situation that can and will occur.

This show is mostly becoming nothing more than MLS trying to gaslight fans by saying "the refs did nothing wrong so MLS is fine with continuing with using these replacement refs" to justify the continuing refs lockout and ignoring the horrendous officiating in the first several weeks. This is an absolute joke, especially when they tried to justify every single terrible call from the Columbus Charolette game.

LAFC are my least favorite team in sports. They are constantly lunging into challenges, crashing into opponents, instigating confrontations, and diving. The refs and Var really favor LAFC despite their dirty and dangerous play style. I think that was a very weak penalty call because the LACF player pushes the Nashville player with his left arm extended which knocks the defender off balance and allows the LAFC player to reach the ball first. Plus, the LAFC player technically wins the ball but the ball is kicked towards the sideline outside of the penalty box with no other players nearby. If you pause at 2:03 you can see the LAFC player bumps knees with the defender before kicking the ball and has taken all the space away from a defender simply clearing the ball Some things look bad in slow motion but I am not sure what players are supposed to do when an opponent lunges towards the ball from the side right in front a player making normal play to kick the ball. I think Jones was a little unlucky because he misplays the ball after seeing the other player start to lunge.

What people are neglecting to mention about the Jones foul is how he taps the ball once to turn and go but he never touches it again until the foul is committed. He is also lunging at the ball but ALSO the man, and while everyone is focused on the ankle, look up top where he clearly bodies into him as well. Hard. That's a malicious combination made to knock the guy down, off the ball. Jones lacks finesse and he's more like a Dema, Danny O (who played his first season with Dema) type of midfielder. I hate those types of midfielders.

Him hitting the player is clean, body to body contact to challenge for the ball. There is a reason everyone focuses on the ankle, that’s where the only foul is

"malicious" is a dumb word to use. 100% incorrect. Malicious describes intent, and the only intent with that "lounge" is how he hits the ball with the outside of his foot a split second before getting the sliding player's ankle. You truly have no idea what you're talking about.
