Underrated strength of the Byzantines: the cisterns mean that your payoff for aging up comes way faster than all other civs cos you can either speed up your Veteran and Elite upgrades or very quickly field advanced units

How do you think the AoK would fare? King + Horsemen could take on Javelins and the aggressive vills but there are other parts of that matchup.

Are berry patch's better for food and/or olive oil compared to the olive grove?

Berry path food gather rate is slower than olive grove, not sure about the oil. But for the olive groves you have to use wood to build em wich you would rather use early game for production buildings.

I really think the 375 (= 150 (dock) + 3x 75 (fishing boat)) wood on fishing was very important in the result of this game. 375 wood for English is more than a mill + 8 farms would cost (50 + 8x 37 = 346). Putting the age up and all timings nearly 400 resources behind for a 1000 food fishing pond is a lot. I mean sure after spending 375 resources he will be up some scaling for a short amount of time because of the 3 fishing boats aka "extra villagers" and it's a netto 625 resource gain (1000 food - 375 wood) and it's wood to food transition but still.

Yes! Great use of Dialecticus in this, that's one of the big advantages Byz get that I've noticed people ignoring, and getting out on the map to grab all the berries will keep your momentum up better than doing an early farm transition. I think the Cistern of the First Hill also would have been a great choice if any cataphracts are being made. The Golden Horn Tower would be stuck randomly making camel riders of questionable value against the English who probably won't use cavalry.

A build i actually like to use is hippodrome into golden horn tower and then foreign weapons. Reason being that im using silk road most of the time and the latter gives all unique upgrades to your mercenaries, javelins getting extra damage, camel riders getting their armor and +2 armor support for infantry plus i like to be cheeky with grenadiers.

Doesnt the Golden Horn Tower train only mercenaries u trained recently? If u dont train camels from mercenary house u wont get from tower neither

@@Bloodychaser that seems to be the most popular setup but I think the Hippodrome doesn't synergize with those two landmarks as much as the Grand Winery does. You want the extra olive oil income from the Grand Winery to pay for siege units from the FEC more than you want Triumph from the Hippodrome if you're not heavily focusing on cavalry. IMO there's either the cavalry-focused strategy (Hippodrome/Cistern of the First Hill/Palatine School) or the mercenary-focused strategy (Grand Winery, GHT, FEC) and mixing landmark choices between those two paths rarely benefits you.
