Their biggest mistake with the Deangelo plotline, was casting a famous comedic icon. The whole premise of the show was built on using actors who were unknown at that time. But choosing Will Ferrell felt like they were panicking to figure out what to do after Carrell, so they picked him hoping that the audience would already like him because they know who he is.

This was an absolutely fantastic analysis of The Office! And I really appreciated the long format. The Office (US) actually has a youtube channel that's very active. They constantly upload compilation videos and even have had live streams, like having a live Office Trivia game during the holidays this past year (I can't remember if it was closer to Christmas or New Year's). I'm not sure if it's true, but someone in the chat once said it's the guy who played Mose who's in charge of the channel. I'd highly recommend any office fans checking them out. And yeah, the characters who tried to get in between Jim and Pam were most definitely strongly disliked. I know I absolutely despised the Kathy character who was trying to get Jim to cheat with her.
@AP-bc7mgАй бұрын
It would make sense if it were him, the guy who played Mose is Michael Schur, he was a writer and producer for the show too. And for Parks and Rec, and for Brooklyn Nine Nine, and for Black Mirror, pretty much anything the dude touches is gold.

I think Parks & Rec as an spiritual successor to The Office learned a lot of its first season mistakes. Unlike Michael, Leslie Knope is actually extremely competent and passionate about her job and thats why you always root for her. Also a lot more emphatetic and less selfish; and even with those qualities is an extremely fun character to watch. You dont always need your main character to be a jerk to be entertaining, a mistake I feel comedies usually do when the main character is a man

I don't know why everyone says the 1st season is bad. It's amazing!
@6thwilbury23313 ай бұрын
I've never heard anyone call it "bad" per se. More like the worst of the Michael Scott era, if anything. But I know "The Alliance," "Basketball" and "Diversity Day" hold up pretty well against the rest of the series for me. If there is a downside to Season 1, it creates the most inconsistencies with the rest of the series. For example, in "The Alliance," Michael can't think of anything to write about Meredith, as if he doesn't really know her. But from Season 2 forward, Meredith is pretty much a sad caricature of an alcoholic single mom - simply not someone for whom Michael would have nothing to say. (Also, the birthdays established in that episode do not jibe with Jim's subplot in "Survivor Man.") Season 1 also has faces in the background that we never see in subsequent seasons, and one could explain this by saying those people were laid off due to budget problems. In fact, this could have been retconed in Season 2's "Halloween." When corporate requires Michael to fire someone (eventually Devon), there could have been a single line inserted in there - e.g. "You told me there wouldn't be any more layoffs after last summer, and now you want me to can someone on Halloween?" Anyway, I'm with you... I think Season 1 is great. The tone of the season matched most closely with what the series was meant to depict - a documentary. The story lines were the most realistic and relatable to a real workplace. My guess is 90 percent of fans got into the show later (Season 2 for me, for example), so when they go back and watch Season 1, it seems too subtle and understated. For these fans, Kevin being surprisingly good at basketball isn't as funny as Kevin spilling a pot of chili. Jim putting Dwight's stapler in JELL-O isn't as funny as Jim staging a murder scene in the hotel. Stuff like that.

The only part of Michael's character growth I would have liked to see more realistically spelled out were his racist, sexist, and homophobic antics. I think even when he kissed Oscar, it was mainly to make himself feel better, hence why he did in in front of a group. As the seasons wear on, he still does and says offensive, hurtful things but they don't have nearly as much zing as they used to. I would have liked a few plot lines of genuine growth where he is forced to reconcile with the damage he caused in a way that is genuine and doesn't have an undertone of off beat, meta irony to it, the same way Women's Appreciation or Gay Witch Hunt do.

Honestly I think the reason why Mafia hits such a sour note is not only because it’s a bit of a boring episode but because it’s a boring episode coming off of a big two part event episode. I think any episode following Jim and Pam’s wedding was gonna feel kind of boring after the big climax of that 5 season arc which is why I think the writers should have worked harder and found a better plot for the episode after. Mafia kinda feels like everyone was so tired after Jim and Pam’s wedding that they just phoned it in.
