Between Bruce cracking his head, Matthew falling off the rocks, and Brandon's body giving out on him at the immunity challenge, it was definitely a heart in throat episode.

One thing I did appreciate about the sweat or savvy challenge is that the second place team got first choice and the third place team was stuck with whatever was left.

This is a small detail, but I really appreciate this season's focus on a specific theme. The sword and shield immunity idols, the medieval castle feel of tribal, and the chess board are all great touches. Excited to see what the rest of the season has in store.

From beginning to end: -Carolyn’s cold open was hilarious and turned out to be an indicator that the first episode would be as hectic as she was. -Bruce’s exit was a bummer. Expected, but still a bummer. Happy that his exit spurred Probst to mention he would get a “second chance” as I too want that to happen. -Matt climbing the rock was just careless. Like, literally why? For fun? For an idol while all eyes are on you? For because vibes? Confused. -Claire telling Matt about what happened with Matt from Advantage Island was awesome and I think she has a real shot at winning. -I hate that Advantage Island is not optional. I get why, but I would be frustrated if I drew the short straw, got carted off to an island early in the game while my tribe gets to form relationships, and left without a vote only to explain that it wasn’t because I was trying to gain an advantage, but rather because I had not choice. -The editors made Jaime look stupid and I don’t love that. Apparently the guys were wanting her out to keep the tribe strong, but that wasn’t at all stated clearly. -If Brandon and Matthew knew that both Lauren had lied and that Maddy was coming for Brandon, Matthew/Brandon should’ve split their votes between Maddy and Lauren in case Lauren played an idol and then voted out Lauren. Now, Lauren has the only advantage between Brandon/Matthew/Lauren alliance. -I don’t know what will happen to Kane and I’m bummed about it. -I stan Carson

I pretty much agree with all that you said, except for one thing. Brandon and Matthew knew Lauren didn't have an idol--Brandon had it, and it was public knowledge. Although Survivor is heavy into their Advantagegeddon Era, I would doubt they would provide a chance at two idols so early. Even the 3-way advantage didn't become an idol until 2/3 of its players were voted out. The person who should have at least considered splitting votes was Maddy. Since she told Matthew about the Brandon plan, she knew Brandon might find out about it, and play his idol. It would also increase the odds that Brandon would throw a vote her way. Her exit press revealed that she included Matthew in the plan because Kane was off doing a confessional, and she was unsure if she could talk to him again to seal the deal on the Brandon vote before they had to leave for Tribal Council. She also revealed that Matthew got up AT TRIBAL to go talk to Brandon. This should have been her cue to start up a Plan B, in case Brandon played his idol. If it's me, I try to pull Lauren back in (Maddy knew about her advantage and what it entailed), and ask her to jump back in to vote out Matthew. With 2 votes on Matthew, he goes (even if Kane stays with the Brandon vote). Even if Matthew didn't play his SITD and votes with Brandon for Maddy, the vote is tied and Lauren and Kane (who was close with Maddy) could vote Matthew out on the revote.

I think Matthew climbed the rock for the reason that he was trying too hard to prove himself as useful for the tribe. Kind of hilarious that it did the opposite.

Weirdest first episode i think I’ve ever seen, but I kind of love it. I think expecting perfection from every season is a losing battle, so riding the weird stuff like this is always fun. Hope it amps up without getting too confusing

We got a shot in the dark that worked (even if it meant nothing) and a successful idol plays two things I've been waiting for in the 'new era'. I don't expect the next episode to be as crazy but this is one for the books in terms of premieres.

I got so excited whenever CVS put up the preview for episode 2, because when we are watching the first episode and we saw Matthew play his shot in the dark I told my fiance that that was his best move, but it only works at your tribe's first tribal council to use the shot in the dark to abstain from voting. After that it's only a defensive tool that's not very good, but in using it in a way not to show your cards it works 100% of the time at that first tribal if you're split on which way it's going to go and you want to look good in the fallout

Ratu tribe: I honestly thought that Maddie should've been honest that she saw Brandon find the immunity idol and asked to work together, rather than be weird about it. Also Brandon and Matthew worked so hard with the coconut challenge it felt wrong to vote them out. I loved the moment when Brandon and Matthew were done and hugging and saying they had each other's backs after that monumental challenge.

it's pretty much the same editing as last season, and i really enjoyed last season. it will lead to some more "unexplained" votes for the veiwer, but it helps keep the game interesting post merge. basically turned survivor into a "who dun it" movie.

With the chaos going on in Australian Survivor and the improvement they did with the editing, actually hinting what are the possibilities and the reasoning of the vote before a TC. This episode just felt like a lot was left not explained and this is so frustrating.

This is a very promising cast. I’m looking forward to this season. I winced when Matthew popped his shoulder out. It’s happened a few times to me. It’s complete agony until it pops back in. The problem is that shoulder is going to be sore and partially slip out of joint randomly for the rest of the show. It’ll be at least 3 months before he feels 100% again

I just realized this episode that advantage island doesn’t ever seem to negatively impact a person, even if hey lose their vote. What seems to happen is that the tribe they left will split into sides, and then the person who was sent away will become the swing vote. They never seem to actually be the target, and instead end up with the most power.

The messiness of the Orange/Ratu tribe was fun to watch at tribal but I think do there’s a lot of potential with the showmance and also with Claire’s cleverness on the Green/Soka tribe. Losing Bruce really messed up the power dynamic on Purple imo. Hopefully there’s a big shakeup before that trio can wipe out Carolyn and Yam Yam.

HELP PLS! Ep 2. A) I thought they weren't allowed to sit someone out in back to back challenges? Jeff questioned her if it was a personal or group decision but then allowed it. B) Why did they refer to her as the "3rd person VOTED out" when she was only the 2nd voted? Brandon was medically tapped. Normally they don't refer to a med evac or quitter as someone who's been "voted" out. I'm so confused! 🙃

A player can't sit out two challenges in the same segement. SO you can't sit out a reward challenge and immunity challenge in the same episode.

I watch The Challenge and I complain how some of the challenges aren't well designed or thought out. They had an issue in their finale this past season where people weren't just plagued with injuries, but somebody almost DIED from one of the challenges (broke their nose and fractured their face instead). This is UNACCEPTABLE and I think it carries over to Survivor. The design of the wooden barrier could have been designed safer (no protrusions from the planks at the end). I wish that they could just let Bruce play, sure he was extracted from the game as a precaution but it seems like a "rule for rules sake". Other than that, excellent episode. The brains or brawn thing is meh. Some of the new advantages are cool and that tribal was surprisingly hectic!

It also seems like the edit is trying to drown out the elements that were uh… heavy in the last seasons to say the least. Maddy said she refused to vote Jaimie or Lauren in first tribal while Lauren apparently refused to vote Brandon. Given the trends of last seasons early eliminations, this seems like part of the individual motivations between how everyone voted.

If you watch the challenge Bruce damn near breaks his neck nearly diving head first into that log they had to go under, I physically winced watching. Then immediately smashes his head on the next obstacle. I feel for him but you're also responsible for your own safety.

I don’t think he played his shot of the dark out of strategy. In episode 2 he tells every tribe he built all the puzzles at home and practices, he put a huge target on his back. If he is such a strategist he would not have said that. He was scared so he played his shot in the dark.

I really enjoyed the premiere. I think they're finally finding the right balance between advantages, camp life, and overall gameplay that was missing in 41 and has slowly but surely improved over 42 and 43. Unfortunately, a lot of people are dumping on the premiere but it seems to be the groupthink that has decided that AU Survivor is automatically leagues better than U.S. (they say as they ignore AU's many flaws) even those Blood Vs. Water was one of the worst seasons of all-time. Plus, I think some of said groupthink is just the right wing, older fanbase that still can't get over "guys" because they're afraid of "wokeness". Personally? The new era has had its share of ups and downs but I feel like the innovation has been much more good than bad. Plus, the 40s have churned out some of the best casts ever.

Day 1 Superfan here, and I absolutely HATED this premiere. For all Jeff's rhetoric about the "craziness" and "unpredictability", that has come at a dire cost. I'm done with the "Calvinball" era...where no strategic player has room to maneuver because there's no space to play. Continuously taking away votes erodes the game's core structure, and the pile of advantages is just too much. Public idols takes away their potency, and the forced games of chance just don´t belong. Nobody watching cares about Jeff taking away the flint, and the meager supplies and unsafe conditions has led to a shameful number of medical situations. I literally hate that I need to keep watching US Survivor, when AU and SA are hitting on all cylinders. Someone needs to take the keys away from grandpa Probst, becaues he's completely lost sight of what made the game great. Give me drama inherent in the vs. themes...give me drama that hidden idols create...give me drama from tribal factions in larger tribes...give me drama from great gameplay, or auctions, or swaps... Probst claims that Survivor is "unpredictable", but they've done sweat vs. savvy every season, and have forced games of chance, and public idols...he's made it completely predictable. This was not the exciting episode everyone says it was...it was horribly boring and painful to watch. I may not even finish the season. (This is coming from someone who successfully rewatched Thailand and Redemption Island.) Meanwhile, watch AU heroes vs. villains for a taste of modern Survivor. This show that Probst produces now has almost no resemblance to it.
