I remember hearing this song on pop radio as the Pandemic was erupting, and my first reaction was, "...Oh... "Take On Me!" If they didn't outright sample the drumbeat from that song, they simulated it very well. A catchy synth riff, he sings in his lower register during the verses, then goes up to high head voice/falsetto during the choruses. That year, it seemed like the biggest song around in pop, and I was pretty shocked it got no nominations at the Grammy's. Fast forward a couple of years, and all of the sudden in 2022, Harry Styles' "AsIt Was" comes out, and I'm like..."Hmmm...."Take On Me" again!" Again, the drumbeat either sampled or simulated, another catchy synth riff,and he sings in the lower register during the verses, and higher in the chorus, especially the falsetto on the hook/title line. Last year, I had the opportunity to do production and DJ at the wedding of some dear friends, and did a mix of "Take On Me" to "Blinding Lights" and finish with "As It Was." And the people on the dance floor loved it, one of the best moments of the night. Great analysis as always, Rick!

One thing I think we need to parse out is a song being streamed vs streamed from unique listeners. A song can be streamed multiple times by a single person, for example, a DJ with a tablet plugged into Spotify who does a lot of weddings, bar/bat mistvahs, quinceañeras, etc AND autgenertated 'hits' playlists going on in gyms and dentists offices vs myself who will only listen to this song only when someone is talking about it. So if you have never heard this song, it makes sense.

The 80s call-back is obvious, but, above and beyond that, definite echoes of Aha's "Take On Me." The tempo, the base line, fat synth, the falsettoed vocals, SO similar. - It's an completely original song, and an awesome song ( - love it!), so no shade here, at all - quite the contrary. But, once you listen to it, with the Aha song in mind, it's unmistakably comparable. - Again totally original, but like it could also have been an Aha song, on the same album as Take On Me. - Is it just me? ....Just read some of the other comments; nope - definitely not just me!

Incredible video, and incredible song! Not only is "Blinding Lights" the most streamed but at least a few years back it was one of the most requested songs to learn by high school and college bands and it has made its presence known at sporting events far and wide. The Weeknd hit it out of the park with this one! I've only ever heard this song in F minor (or really F Dorian) as opposed to E-flat major or C minor but this exercise of trying to hear it in either of those keys is a good illustration of how modes work and are related I think. It continually resolves to the F note a lot and meets the criteria of having the Dorian D-natural note in the melody as well as the IV B-flat major chord.

It’s sounds like 80’s because According to Wiki this song was “Inspired” by Rod Stewart’s “Young Turks” you can clearly hear it in the intro and the verses. You can hear lot of similar melodies and patterns from “Young Turks” but regardless it’s a great song and The Weekend is one of the very few new artists who truly has a golden voice and a great musician. When he sings you can immediately tell it’s The Weekend.

Although there were plenty of good hit songs in the 80s, I think the 80s pales in comparison to the 70s. In all regards: music, cars, fashion, and societally. To compare a funk hit from 1974 with a synth-driven pop hit from 1984 is to go from something 100% live and organic to something built from the ground up using artificiality. A song built on a quantized drum beat (made from synth-derived noises that *kinda* resemble a drum kit) will never truly groove like a great band playing live.

always excellent. I understand the modes, I taught myself the 7 scale positions in 2012, and it's relative pentatonic, diads ,triads, octaves, etc. all in one key, so I got one key down pretty solid (obviously there's no such thing as having anything completely mastered). However I milked one key doing all these things so much that I now can move it all to any key, the "shapes" are the same, and I'm glad I also know what the notes are, all 7 modes are in each scale position, and it's so easy to create now knowing these things. Especially being able to weave through all the fretboard creating .

Yes, 80s vibe. But people are forgetting that the Weeknd is Canadian. So while many of you will think of A-ha, the first artist who came to my mind was (Larry) Gowan who wrote the song Strange Animal and the song Desperate. Music fans today will recognize Larry as he is now in the band Styx. Now those Canadians born in late 60s early 70s may also recall the animation company Nelvana. Their scores for their cartoons in the 70s tended to riff on the sound the Weeknd has produced now. Just a thought.
@julianandrews60256 ай бұрын
Funnily enough when you say Canadian I say Neil Young
@JohnSmith-oe5kx6 ай бұрын
Interesting that you raise Gowan because I always felt that Strange Animal was let down by the production and arrangement and could have been such a better song. The bass part is BOOOOORING and muddy, and the drums are either basic or awkward and inconsistent. So I looked it up to discover it was produced by David Tickle, with Tony Levin on bass and Jerry Marotta on the kit??? Same on Criminal Minds. Disappointing effort from these guys. Like the worst of both worlds between live players and electronic music.

But there were certain phenomenally produced tunes that were listenable solely for the sonic exploration. I have never heard this particular tune- but it is upbeat and catchy. What has happened to recorded music over the last 20 years is the antithesis of Mono Culture - like you say everything is splintered into discreet niches that could have huge amounts of listeners but to what passes as the 'mainstream' these days is totally under the radar. I look at festival lineups for things like Coachella or South by Southwest and I may have heard of 10 percent of all the artists playing there but tens of thousands of people turn up to see them...
