Learjet pilot here. As Captain Steve hinted at, these pilots experienced a complete loss of control. My gut reaction seeing the video with the extremely steep descent and roll angle/rate at such low altitude points to flight control malfunction. Victor from VASaviation brought up a great point in the comments - these jets are extremely powerful and accelerate very quickly after takeoff. For this reason, I think a stall scenario in this case is less likely. I have flown out of Northeast Philly airport on the Lear countless times, and the initial departure climb only clears you to 2000'. Because of this, they would not have been climbing steeply enough to lose airspeed, especially in a Lear 55 which accelerates like a rocket in a shallow departure climb at takeoff thrust. We have a system onboard the Lear called a yaw damper. The yaw damper system automatically makes small inputs to the rudder surface to keep the fuselage aligned with the relative wind during turns and reduce unwanted roll/yaw movements (for example, in turbulence). Standard practice is to engage the yaw damper shortly after we bring the gear up on departure. In the simulator, we have run scenarios involving a failure of the yaw damper system on departure which causes the rudder surface to fully deflect to one side. This creates a very rapid roll/yaw that is extremely disorienting when you're flying in clouds with no visual reference. The problem has to be identified and corrected immediately or you will lose control of the airplane. The investigation will ultimately reveal what went wrong, but I figured I'd add my $0.02.

Within the range of outcomes, what are the chances you think it could be spacial disorientation? I'm not in aviation but I follow it closely and while far from an expert, I've been learning toward some type of catastrophic mechanical issue but mainly awaiting the proper reporting to come out later.

Sometimes there is a legitimate reason to cast blame. Sometimes it's just unfortunate circumstances. The helicopter in DC was nearly 2x its allowed altitude. Regardless of which airplane they thought they were supposed to look at, if they'd been at their allowed altitude, the wreck wouldn't have happened. It's correct to lay blame. Here, who knows?

I just said to my son today, imagine the fear and concern having to fly a sick child to a hospital but then to endure that on the way??? It’s almost a cruel joke. How does that happen? I recall a crash, I think near me in Illinois, where a baby was being flown to a hospital at night and it was raining and the helicopter or plane flew into electrical power wires and crashed. It was tragedy on an already tragic situation. 😢

Yup! I saw the Fox News first report (I know...but the reporter was a few blocks away getting dinner, so first on scene). He went on ad nauseam about 'potential' reasons - spending a LOT of time talking about icing/de-icing, even AFTER saying how warm it was! I'm NOT a meteorologist, but I know enough that it couldn't be the cause...after about 15 mins they brought in their weather person who said...NO. Like full rebuke of the reporters assertions. I'll always go with a pilot or other authority, even for speculation, because they KNOW what is likely or unlikely. Could they be wrong on why, sure. But as you said, reasons are where it gets tricky.

Thank you for this Captain Steve. I survived a plane crash in 1966. My dad, mother and I walked away after crashing just a minute or so after take-off. A piper Cherokee which was a rental had a tool left in the left wing. It jammed the left aileron just after take off. My dad reverted back to his training from a well respected instructor he had. "Keep flying the aircraft." he thought. As you said here, fly, navigate, communicate. We totaled the airplane but survived unscathed. The experts commended my father's performance in that event. People must know...they didn't feel a thing. They experienced terror before impact, but...like a light switch...out, upon impact. Feel for friends and family.

About 10 years ago I was on a flight that was landing in San Francisco, we were nearly to the runway and the plane just dropped, literally dropped, the pilot got the plane back in the air and when he made an announcement that we hit an air pocket you can tell in his voice that he was as shaken as we were. I've taken flights halfway around the world to NZ and the Philippines and have experienced massive turbulence, but the experience in San Fran is something I'll never forget and I'm thankful for the pilot for taking control. That experience did not stop me from flying, there is too much to see and do and I'm fortunate enough to be in an a point in time where it is possible to see the world.

@@xeniakay193Air pockets are a fictional thing… they don’t exist. What does exist are things call eddies and turbulence, as well as wind shear. Chances are the person above experience turbulence close to the ground (likely an Eddie from a larger aircraft in front of their plane) which caused a loss of lift temporarily… up at 38,000 feet it’s not a big deal as there are thousands of feet to recover… but if it happens on approach to landing, strong eddies or turbulence or shear have caused aircraft to slam into the ground. It’s the one reason pilots must maintain larger separation when making their landing approach behind a larger aircraft (or large aircraft period)

I read a comment on another video that the plane looked like it was on fire as it came down. Implying that perhaps there may have been problems with medical equipment like an oxygen tank exploding that may have contributed to this disaster. Someone else said it just looked like the lights from the plane itself. Regardless which it turns out to be, it's a tragic, and my heart goes out to all those that lost their lives, and their loved ones.

Outbound 1 crew upfront with pilot and inbound 2 med crew in back. In our 105 all 3 of us were together. In our 117 and 145 there was cabin separation. Med crew had full access to radio heads in the rear cabin and we able to do comms if pilot was busy. Both of these events are devastating but your insinuations are very disturbing.
