Hey everyone, I hope you enjoy the third letter! I just want to let you know that the next couple videos are more infrastructure focused, but I’m working on starting the boat work soon… the weather is obviously making it a little harder. If you’re just here for the restoration, I should have some paint stripping posted around the middle of February or beginning of March (I’m working on sourcing a generator since I haven’t seen the sun in a couple weeks and my solar generator isn’t up to the task).

@aboatinthewoods For long-term truck camping, I put together a diy solar generator that was cheaper and better than the commercial ones. Just need panels, a controller, deep ccyle batteries, and wiring. I used Anderson PowerPoint connectors for connectivity. If you know anyone with a three D printer, a printable control panel is available on Thingiverse. Have fun.

The more pragmatic approach to restoration that you're signalling here is definitely the right one: perfectionism is the enemy of the good. Repair the boat as well as you can, sail it and learn. At some point, no doubt, you'll have to do more repairs -- and by then you'll be so much more knowledgeable about the boat's strengths and shortcomings that you'll make much better judgements than you did the first time.

Hello I live in the middle of a forrest at the swedish westcoast. I've been following boatbuilders and restorers for some years now, always looking for new ones. The ones I enjoy are those that tell a story. You are good at telling a story, or as you say, you write us letters. I am very much looking forward to your next letter. Thanks for sending them.

I know it's not a lot of fun to dig holes with a lot of rocks in the soil, or using a small bow saw to cut through a decent sized tree stump. I'm glad to see you're showing more than just the boat work. So many other channels don't show anything other than everything going perfectly while they work on their boat. Best wishes and much respect.

I was going to add: progress with such a project can be so incremental that you can barely notice sometimes, and it may get you down. Do whatever you can to celebrate milestones of achievement along the way. Maybe set some golden milestones to head for - but keep them realistic and motivating so they are in reach. Just a thought!

I'm very much enjoying the storytelling here and your editing is nice. The pace is also great, sometimes it's important to watch every hole being dug as that tells a story in itself. Don't ever speed up the edits please! I wish you all the best with your restoration here, I've done a few and am on another now (not boats though!). The point the letter sent in about not having things perfect is a good one. We all have a limited time for work and to make sure you enjoy sailing it, don't be a slave to perfection. It's an old boat, if it's sound, leave it be. Nice to see you are also a Makita fan (the chainsaw is great)!

If no one's told you, the right bow saw blade is critical. A green saw blade or pruning saw blade is required unless that tree wood is dry. And then tree wood has to be debarked too. Thanks for making the videos.

I live near Mount Rainer digging a hole is a joke. I just dug 5 for a boat shed. I welded one of the super old style auger wood drill bits onto rebar about 4 feet long. Put my cordless drill on it set the clutch so it doesn't break your thumb on rocks and drill. Used a shop vac to lift dirt out. My son made fun of me till he saw it work.

I feel this creepy (I think it is) sort of kindred spirit thing when I watch your videos. Just weird parallels to how I think/act when I'm on my own. And we even use the same damn tape measure. I actually stopped watching halfway through (will finish later), cause I starting thinking to myself that you're a more successful version of me. Thank you! I use Davinci Resolve to do my editing and colour grading, I’ll probably show the process in a later video once I get it to the point where I’m happy with the result. Basically, the process goes: colour space transform > halation effect > LUT (Kodak 2383) > white balance and exposure > contrast and saturation > film grain effect > film blur
