Fuckin' moon unions. I loved that reveal. Phos now being aware of time passed is really interesting. During the rest of the story I got the feeling that there could easily be weeks or months passing between events. The Gems are hundreds or thousands of years old and immortal so the passage of time itself has no meaning. What a Gem did today a Gem will do tomorrow. When the status quo is rammed by the semi-truck of Phos' lunar escapades each day could drastically change the next. I agree with your conclusion at the end. I believe that no matter how much I've changed I'm still me. Phos challenges the hell out of that for me. If you're familiar with the Ship of Theses, I'm of the belief that something that is changed over time retains its identity. I want to apply that to them as well. That's difficult when the parts that Phos had replaced also carried with them the very things that define who they are. Especially when someone else's head is put into the mix. That 100 year time skip was one of the saddest parts of the story for me for that very reason. In the end the Gem we're following is still Phos and only Phos.

The moon union part was the single greatest reveal ever. We're all thinking that maybe they feed off sunlight like the gems but nope. *MOONIONS*. The Ship of Theseus really sums everything up. You could say the answer to whether Phos is still Phos is "yes" or "no" and be right both ways, but when we look at the Buddhist perspective, there was never a true Phos to begin with. But at the same time, that means that every Phos is Phos. BUT, it also means that no Phos is Phos, because Phos doesn't exist. Makes my head spin. Still, I think Phos is ultimately on the right path, even if it is pretty rough.

@@zeroloid9762 You definitely could argue Phos' Phosness either way, but the fun part is how you get to either conclusion. Well, this has quickly become more about philosophy than the show. How would we define a "true Phos" in this scenario? Saying every Phos is Phos and no Phos is Phos is a contradiction and makes no sense on its own. I think that's because we're using True Phos kinda like a Platonic Ideal. Every Phos is Phos because there is no strict set of properties to define what a "Phos" is. That's as far as I can carry that line of logic. No Phos is Phos because Phos doesn't exist seems more like word soup than a logical statement, unless we wanna go hardcore nihilistic. That may be due to my own lack of understanding of what the argument is saying though. Phos.

I find nihilistic things like that to be absurdly reductive. I mean, if I believed that, the entire point of this video would fall apart wouldn't it? I'm just saying that taking the Buddhist perspective to it's furthest limits, you could say that there is no such thing as a self at all. Considering the goal of Buddhism is to extinguish the self, which is perceived as a delusional perception soup made out of pure illusion. I'd say it's more of a paradox than a straight contradiction. But yeah, you were right the first time as far as I'm concerned. Phos is always Phos because a Phos is still a Phos even if you Phos it, regardless of what a Phos is. Phos. Geez, I'm just thinking out loud at this point. Phos Phos.

I always felt that Aechmea was lying to Phos and the others about Sensei's love power, and that he was being manipulative towards Craig-chan-san-man, but I hadn't realized that Craig had all that going on too. I guess you could think of Cairngorm as an angry child longing for some sort of authority figure. I mean, he's basically an orphan at this point. I can't help but think Aechmea and Gormiewormie's relationship is unhealthy too.

I love your video, it share many of my views and pains when reading this manga. I think this is the most positive way someone categorizes Phos's transformation. Most are either simply putting it into Black and White matter and who's right and wrong.

i'm so glad i could find this video. i love hnk so much but i have so many emotions about the manga that i couldn't really sort out, and i'm glad you analyzed the entire thing. a lot of my conflicting thoughts on the series has to do with phos' ever changing "self". i keep thinking about things like "is this phos?" or "how much does phos really remmeber" and things like that. the story is a bit unclear on that aspect and you can make all kinds of theories, but maybe a rigid definition of phos' identity isn't really that important here. idk. you brought up a good point when you said identity is pretty fluid. [spoilers up to ch 93 in the next section] another interesting thing in the manga was achmea's plans for phos, regarding creating a human. i just find it so interesting that, keeping in mind everything they went though, it was phos who he targeted to turn into a human. the art in 93 was especially strong in that regard haha you also brought up an interesting point with caingorm/achmea's relationship and how it was basically her switching one dependent identity for another. it reminds me of ichikawa's "star lover" in her short story work, which features a pedophilic relationship (her short stories are incredible. if you like hnk absolutely give them a try. they're called sakuhinshuu). it's hard not to see how manipulative achmea and caingorm's relationship can be. overall, this was a really good analysis of hnk's manga. you brought up a lot of things i didn't consider, and i'm really interested in your thoughts on the latter chapters. i wanna go reread it now too haha. keep up the good work!

How it deals with Phos' internal issues as well as touching other gems' issues in a good pace is something i love about the series. The worlds It built and the characters is all in a good way. Just read the whole manga and is waiting for the Hiatus to end. But damn. I could imagine Phos after this becoming somesort of Godlike being who will once more turn the clock of life but... Not before going back to the Moon to see his friends, the lunarians, and Sensei to surprise them of his accomplishment. He would appear on the Moon in his old-self only, fleshy, I would say. Wearing the same expression that he had way back in the day. He would then both apologize and thank his family for the wonderful adventures that he had during his time before announcing that he will be turning them back into humans as he will turn the clock of life once more on the planet. Thus, all of them being reincarnated into humans in the future. In the future: Reincarnation of Phos' friends(Gems and lunarians) would be chattering about, walking in the flourishing city and taking selfies. One by one, we would see glimpse of other gems reincarnates (and the lunarian prince as well as Adamant) walking past them or them waking by them. As they arrive in a Plaza where the Statue of Phos is placed for religious purposes (Although, at this time. They think of Phos as this God like Jesus.) As the reincarnates starts taking selfies around the area and praying on Phos' statues, they bump into what we would see as person sporting a hairstyle that we are all too familiar with. This would then cause a chain reaction inside the reincarnates and tears would then come down from their eyes. This person would then ask as to what was wrong, worried what she might have done to cause this. The reincarnate would then say the name "Phosphophyllite" to which the person would then answer, "Yes?" Hearing that would make the reincarnates jump unto her hugging her like there was no tomorrow. And that person would then end up crying too as she too would get that feeling of connection crying, "Idk what I did but, I'm sorry. I feel like I did something bad." Although they wouldn't have most of their past memories, they will still retain their identity.

Oh yeah, and please by all means list the inaccuracies so I can avoid them next time. Admittedly I'm much better at understanding film than manga. The subtleties go right over my head sometimes. For example, it took me many times to notice that the weird human flagellum thing appears in the sky every time Phos puts on a facade (which probably has something to do with the huma-I mean, pearl eye), much like how the shadow of the moon shows up every time he tries to forget about what he's doing. Also, do you think Aechmea's trying to make Gormie and Phos vessels for a reborn humanity by giving them human eyes? Or am I just nutters?

@@zeroloid9762 Yeah Aechmea's long term plan is to have Phos become a new Sensei, and have him pray them away, it's easier than trying to make Sensei collaborate at this point However, Phos will not play into Aechmea's plans, will have a breakdown and make a retreat to think about the world (most likely in the ocean, with the Admirabilis) until Phos reaches enlightenment and can become a Bodhisvatta. Then, Phos will be far superior to Sensei, who is an inferior Buddha (linked to a certain god who protects children, the gems in the manga), and will be able to save/reconcile both the Lunarians and the Gems, and the Admirabilis might be acting as Phos/Buddha's disciples. This is hinted by the fact that Ventricosus and (especially) Variegatus are the only ones in the end who really saw Phos as an equal or a friend, looking at Phos with respect. For Cairngorm, Aechmea might be trying to make a new human, or rather, use Cairngorm as a basis to make human offsprings, as the Rohini myth seem to suggest (yeah it's a lot of Buddhist and Hinduist stuff ahah)

I wouldn't quite agree as phos expressed selfish desires all throughout the story. Wanting to find out the truth as well. It's more like it got amplified rather than being completely passed on I think. Lapis was too smart for their own good i think that's even explicitly stated and it clearly shows in why they were taken to the moon (overthinking during battle). I do think that lapis had great influence but it's more like This suspicion of Phos sowed the seeds and lapis reaped them in a way.
