Quick update: Amazon's Anime Strike service which was the only place to watch Lustrous and was behind not only the paywall of Amazon Prime but also as separate subscription fee for Strike just closed. Everything offered under said service is being moved to Prime Video. Here's an official statement: "We have decided to move the curated catalogs of Anime Strike and Heera into Prime Video so that more customers can enjoy this content as part of their Prime membership."

Anigami Totally just binge watched it now that Anime Strike is down. I really liked it. It was very different from a lot of anime. I really loved the development of Phos and the mystery going on. The CGI and animation of this show really works. I do hope there is a season 2.

Banana Potato don’t think about it that way. Instead, think about how the studio decided to dedicate itself to correctly adapting the manga and following the perfect pace. They didn’t rush a single thing, and stayed true to the manga despite having to end in not the most climatic way. Honestly in the manga they seem to get a bit of their old self back after the 3rd big change. The biggest difference is Phos's innocence and naivety isn't every going to be the same. I extremely liked the concept of the body storing the memories and personality of the individual. It is a very effective metaphor for leaving your old self behind to improve and reach you goals. Also the hardness of the gems were a very intriguing part of the design. For me it symbolises the injustice of privilege and birthright. The hardness the figures are born with determined their work and their status although they have done nothing to achieve that.
@TheTalkedSpy4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say "injustice." I think of it as more of "unfairness", just like how no one chooses to be more in, say, a wealthy family or without any birth defects.

Hey can we stop comparing this series to SU on account of the fact that they both have gems? They're made in two separate countries and have vastly different overarching morals. It just feels like you're overlooking and brushing off the hard work people put into this show to make it as engaging as it is in favor of making a cheap joke that's already been recycled countless times.

@cassandrabelyeu24196 жыл бұрын
And even if they are put back together, they aren't the same, like Phos. You see them lose something. Getting depressed, sleepless, having mood swings, failing to emote. Death in Houseki no Kuni is not final, but when characters die on other shows they are still the same, available to reminisce about and come back in dreams. In Houseki no Kuni, you can't even mourn them and they're lost for good.

I think the best part is if you read the manga, you can tell that the anime is very loyal to it. Every part of the anime is the same as the manga. Sadly it's only 7 volumes. ;( I hope to buy the full series 'cause reading online is just not enough. Ahh correction, there are 8 volumes. Amazon just stated 7.

@Mimiki2036 жыл бұрын
It's still being released. I highly doubt there will only be 8 with the spoilers I've accidentally come across for the manga. With how the manga is paced, I'd say scanlators have at least 15 volumes of content whereas licenced release is only up to 6 released. 7 is up for pre-order so that should be your first hint that the series is not complete.
@adolfoviruet74817 жыл бұрын
Anyone up to date with the manga know what's to come, and i hope we get to seem them for future seasons. As for those who have stuck around this season watching this and want more, the manga, towards the later chapter, goes into realm that really speaks out to much of the strength of this story's concept. It's very rare to see human condition writing like this, and it does pose an important question that needs our attention and consideration. Just read the manga, and you'll be for one hell of a time with where this story goes.

I highly recommend anyone to watch this anime if they are searching for a very "human" anime (despite the main character being a living jewel). It's a story that focuses on finding one's self worth and purpose and how difficult it can be. The animation is quite a spectacle and I love the music very much (especially that opening). Give it a try if this sounds like something you'd be interested in!

For this type of thing I think CG works really well. While the anime is still technically airing I wanted to get this video and review out sooner rather than later. My thoughts on the series are so established at this point in time that I don't see the remaining episodes changing that opinion much whether it be positively or negatively. I also noticed a severe lack of well put together, spoiler-free promotional/review videos on the series and simply wanted to promote a show that I've been recently passionate about and giving those who find the premise interesting the time to catch up and finish off the series together with everyone else as it wraps up. I'll be looking into creating a follow-up video on my final thoughts of the series as well as highlighting the handful of flaws (albeit minor) in more depth and of course plenty of juicy spoiler talks and discussion. However, the date of said video is very much in the air especially with holiday craziness and job searching fun wrapping up the rest of my December in a nice little busy bow. Thanks for watching and it's currently 6AM after working on this video for most of the day so rest in peace my sleep schedule.

Many people are saying that Land of the Lustrous is a anime of SU. But I consider they are completely different no matter it's from the character, or the world view, or the plot. Literally, the only thing that this artisic series is as same as SU is the characters are gems. And LOL's characters are more toward to 'minerals' instead of 'gems‘ for many of it's characters are not considered gems at all. The relationship between every character is based on their natural mineralogy(Hardness, tenacity, crystal system, uses and mineral classification). This is definetely deeper than SU...It is necessary to search in Wikipedia for more information of minerals that were personified in this series if you want to fully understand the show. The setting and the design of the characters are interesting. The author of the manga makes the plot in a realistical style. This piece of art also presents another precious thing is that the depiction to humanity and the cruelty and expenses of growing up is totally meaningful. You have to read the original manga to feel this and even in the anime, you can see and feel the changes on all the main characters. This series uses 28 mineral and stone characters to shrink the size of a society while keeping the people that will greatly affect the protagonist. It's like a biography to record the whole life of a person. But though this is a biography, the storyline is still brilliant and fluctuant. Not only the changing on Phos is impressive but the changings on Cinnabar, diamond and bort is also profound. In the end, you will understand that being strong needs costs and the costs is painful. There are no gore and blood on losing limbs. There are no exaggerated scenes but you can feel it's pain and joy. There is no voice-over and it pushes you to think and feel. This show is worth to watch and It is one of my favourite anime in 2017, even the recent past 4 years.

8:26. As much as I love Land of the Lustrous and the excellence of your video, that Xenoblade Chronicles music made me stop watching and stop listening to the words. I had to go back and watch that part again, because that music is so frigging amazing!!

2023 - STILL desperately waiting for season 2 ................. not sure what's up with Orange, Land of the Lustrous is the best anime they've produced yet they stop making it? Why? It doesn't make any sense at all.

The gems are supoosed to be "made of" the squeletons of humans or based from those that is the main for their phisical apearence. ;))
@Starriaaa5 жыл бұрын
Land of the lustrous is leagues better than Steven universe because you can tell the creators of this show actually did research on gems and incorporated it into their personality status and it works out well not to mention that the manga predate SU by a year so don’t even compare them

I love the amv!! I've become too obsessed with this anime
@MouseGoat6 жыл бұрын
I would not be surprised at all if the original webcomic whas what inspired Rebecca Sugar to SU but its great, I think the "gem people" stuff is as a really cool concept and only deserves more love XD but to be fair, the idea of crystals getting life power from the sun, is as old as time, and really the only ting the to shows seems to have truly in common. (that and long life time... but that ones a given, rocks can't be killed) just ad human (girl) and you got the concept. so yeah, well unless Teacher is actually old steven?, yes that's it! theory is confirmed!!

Talk about "graphic and heart-wrenching", I've read the manga and many things happen to Phos which will totally freak many people out. While ordering the manga on line, I saw the cover art of Vol 7, registered what it was and and quickly turned away as I suspected it was a "spoiler." Then read to the end of Vol6 and I was agape - Vol7's cover did NOT prepare me for what happens. There's a cost to immortality: it's eternal suffering. This trope is not new, but this Anime has broken new ground.

The advancement in 3d CG are surely impressive, but in my opinion it will never completely be as expressive and organic as handdrawn animation. The 3d graphics are a important tool in anime but won't replace it. Traditional animation has several advantages, like jumping between drawing styles to express the emotions of the scene, it can dip into surrealism with experimental animation and it can stretch around proportions to give the movements of the figures more impact .

I just watched this... and I my ONLY issue with it is the character design. Kinda grossly "anime-girl x1000".. I heard another reviewer call it "elegant". Yes/No? Oh Japan... you like your dainty girls... squeamishly.
@Th3Sh1n1gam16 жыл бұрын
There's a huge spoiler in why they all look that.
@Umezete6 жыл бұрын
Honestly, the anime kinda plays up the girlishness a bit. Reading the manga they felt a bit more androgynous even if they were pretty feminine.
@nosoulboy136 жыл бұрын
I think about it as an influence... Is this what girls should look like? Is this the shape of a beautiful girl? What is the underlying message here? I still liked the show... that part just kinda creeped me out. Made me make a "hmmm" face.
@iii71396 жыл бұрын
The character design is not to let it be female honestly! "The upper part of body will be as lean as boys, The lower part of body will be as slim as girls." This is how the author of the manga said. To create a genderless but slim body for those people. Anyway they are not human so they can't be really in a human shape, Right? But you cannot judge if it's elegant just from how the characters look and actually it's not that bad... Probably this is the contrast between the art and culture. And truely, from my peerspective this is far way better than those girl anime in Japan...The virtual and moral quality of this show is what I like and what I respect.
