Breaking HVAC Cardinal Sins

Today was one of those days where things just didn’t go by the book. We started off with some vaporstat adjustments, which should have been simple enough-but in the process, two HVAC cardinal sins were broken! (We’ll get to those soon…)
Next up was a no heat call, and of course, it had to be in one of the dirtiest, most disgusting basements I’ve seen in a while. After some troubleshooting, we found the issue-a completely blocked exhaust, which is a serious safety hazard. Clearing that up got the system running safely again, but it was a reminder of how important it is to check venting regularly.
From there, we moved on to a leaking water heater, which had to be shut down before it caused more damage. Then, it was time to replace a condensate pump, a straightforward swap that helped get things back in order.
The last job of the day? Removing a bad blower motor, which had completely failed. Fortunately, by this point, we had stopped breaking HVAC sins and got through the job with no more disasters.
But what was the worst sin of them all? Calling the boss at the end of the day and asking if there was any more work left to do! That’s a rookie move if I’ve ever seen one-sometimes, you just have to call it a day and head home while you still can!
Let me know in the comments-what’s the biggest HVAC sin you’ve ever seen or committed? Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and hit the bell so you don’t miss out on more HVAC chaos!

Never talk about a previous job site, saying "We haven't been there in a while" because, as sure as you do, that customer will call within a week with a problem 😂

The cardinal sin I tried hardest not to break was mentioning how a problem job has been quiet for a while. If you asked another tech about it or mentioned that it's been good, literally the next day a call would come in for the job being down. 🤔 Every one you mentioned was true.

Working at your own house and not checking to see if the AC is actually working when you turned it on yesterday, and was wondering why it wasn't cooling down after about 4 hours, only to find that the contactor was bad and the condenser fan motor was bad as well! Ugh. You know flip the switch it was 84F here yesterday and was getting hot in the house not pay attention. Then the wife says, why isn't it getting cool in here! 👍🤠 Another one, was when I told her to go out and check the condenser if she is so hot! 👊🤣

When you’re on call on a holiday and your wife says, “it’s so hot/cold out! Who’s on call?” Might as well just go sit in your van and wait

Answering the question “so, when will you be finished?” And allowing the torches to be put away before the vacuum pump starts.

Worst cardinal sin for any service job is catching yourself saying "it's been a quiet day so far"... never do this or the day will end in utter chaos.
