A few months ago I saw a short doc film that I absolutely loved. It was exactly the kind of work I hope to do one day. I looked up who the cinematographer was, found their website, and sent an email purely to say "Hey, I saw your project, and I really love what you did. Looking forward to seeing more of your work." They are based in NYC, and I ended up being able to connect with them in person for coffee when I was in town a few weeks later. There's no prospects for work on the horizon from this connection, but I was pretty blown away and super grateful that a very successful DP was willing to take the time to chat with a total rando off the internet and share their insights. And it's turned into a helpful occasional email correspondence! Have definitely come to appreciate the old adage "The worst someone can say is no." And have also come to appreciate just being a human first, and connecting on that level.
