I don't understand why. I looked for home listings there online as an American and there seem to be numerous options.

@@number1360 In the cities it is 650 to 900 for a room in a house that is shared or 2,500 starting price to rent a house or an apartment. The wages in Ireland don't equate to people being able to pay these high rental rates. There is a shortage of house supply in comparison to need so houses are not affordable to buy for the majority. There are queues for any available rentals. There is a lack of rentals by the coast because they are all kept to rent out as holiday homes but not long term. There may be houses to rent in the countryside but they are not near cities where the jobs are so allow more money for travel. If you have a very high income you will be OK.
